“Personnel Says Super Bowl”

December 2nd, 2022

“We gave Todd and Byron a Mustang Roush with a couple of dents in it, Mr. Glazer, but they drive it like a tricycle.”

The Bucs’ colossal underachievement this season, including three ugly upset losses, is not on general manager Jason Licht.

A prominent guy at One Buc Palace even put his name on that.

Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network this week, cornerbacks coach Kevin Ross, a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback during his long playing career, knows how good the Bucs should be as they sit with a sad 5-6 record.

Ross knows what it’s supposed to look like. He’s been a player or coach in the NFL playoffs in 14 different seasons.

Ross put it simply and distinctly. “Personnel says Super Bowl,” he said.

Damn right, Kevin.

Look at the NFC. It’s not a great conference this year, historically speaking. And look at the Bucs’ division. They have the best quarterback and the best roster with the most experience, and they’re bumbling their way despite a list of healthy superstars.

Joe sees fans nitpicking Licht. Some of it is reasonable, but most of it is not. Licht is among the least of  the Bucs’ worries. And Joe is willing to wager that the team would be achieving more if Licht had influence on gamedays.

  1. Beej Says:

He has far more hits than misses on his player acquisitions

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I can’t agree more…..Licht has drafted very well and mortgaged the Bucs future on this year…….signing, Jensen, Davis, Lenny…..having Brady return…..he can’t help the injury to Jensen….
This is all on the coaching……our players are very talented but not playing to potential

  3. Hodad Says:

Not sure if it says superbowl, but it sure shouldn’t be 5-6 either. No doubt the talent is better than what the coaches have got out of them. Bowles record as Jets H.C. already proves he’s a below 500 coach.

  4. SB~LV Says:

    Mirage

  5. Ed Says:

This team has been tanking. Except for games against Seahawks, Cowboys and Saints, they have looked horrible, even the win against the Rams and Falcons they sat on the ball and nearly lost in the second half.

    0-6 vs teams with a 35-36 record.

If they were organized and motivated, they should have taken at least 2 or 3 of those losses. I’ll give them the losses vs Ravens and Chiefs but losing to these teams:

    Panthers- 4-8
    Browns- 4-7
    Steelers- 4-7
    Packers- 4-8

Its unacceptable that the Bucs lost all 4 of those games to teams with a combined record of 16-30!

At worse, a split gives them a 7-4 record instead of 5-6

Its criminal that they can be so unprepared to ignore the weaknesses of those loser teams and not attack. Instead trying to expect the defense to win with this scared head coach who believes you can win games without scoring 20 points. Its idiotic and stubborn thinking. No leadership from Bowles/Leftwich.

  6. ChiBuc Says:

He built a winner on paper. Old parchment paper with pen and ink while the rest of the league is moving on to laser printers. I actually feel he did ok for starters, but not as good re: depth and apparently character (the lack of leadership and pride is galling). But really, the only issue I have with Licht is he doesn’t seem to be a strong leader… he allowed BA to pick his coaches, let Tom bring in cancer AB, and if we can point the finger at Lefty for his inability to adjust, what can we say about Licht’s lack of response to shortages on both lines and allowing BL to continue to collect a check. No to mention how he has not addressed any of these issues publicly through the media. Leaders lead, they take control, and right the ship. Licht strikes me more as a fabulous administrative asst to BA and Tom

  7. Casual Observer Says:

Agree. This team (when most are healthy) has the talent to win another super bowl. But coaching strategies must change. No risk it … .

  8. doolnutts Says:

    Coaching is killing us.

Bowles is a great DC but he is not a good HC. And its not even X’s and O’s. His philosophy stinks and doesn’t mesh with what we have. We are a pass first and aggressive team its what BA wants and built. Now Bowles wants us to be conservative and run ineffectively. Running the ball is great when it works. Fournette was brought in to get 3-4 yards and pound the defense to remind them of his presence he was not brought in to run 20+ times a game and even the rookie white is pretty good but that’s not our game. We have STUD receivers that we seem unable to use effectively and this conservative philosophy of playing not to lose is killing us. We need to go for the throat of our opponents like we used to under BA.

  9. Kentucky Buc Says:

Licht should’ve tried to come up with a competent interior lineman. Jensen getting hurt after most of the good ones had been signed is obviously not his fault. The line has been poor at best. Brady’s having to throw wayyyy too many balls off his back foot or flatfooted. Not his game. He needs to be able to step up but there’s no room on most plays for that. No run game compounds this issue. That’s why there’s so many short passes.

  10. Tucker Says:

He is also responsible for not responding to the underperforming coaching that’s been happening not only the personnel so yeah it is on Jason. After that browns performance nothing but crickets from him hey Jason you alive?

  11. August 1976 Buc Says:

The personel says SB?? No it says 5-6, with a bad run defense for so many games.

This team has earned a 5-6 record.

    No sorry.

SIEGE THE DAY, THROW BOWLES IN THE BAY

Old movie for Buc fans, another guy who is not a good fit as a Head Coach. Go back to being am assistant coach Todd,

    GO BUCS!!!!
    .

  12. Buccobruce Says:

This was a color hire nothing more. Thanks to Flores making it a big deal over summer and this is what we are stuck with.

  13. BucsfanFred Says:

    I like Licht.
    Bowlezo, he’s got to go.
Being a minority doesn’t make him untouchable.

  14. Goatfarmer Says:

    Brian Flores or Eric Bienemy.

  15. NEfan Says:

One word comes to mind regarding the 2022 Bucs. “NEUTERED!”

  16. Craig Says:

He teamed with the Bowles cleaner to load up on FAs this season. The reason was to sell out for another Super Bowl win.

It didn’t work any better than it did for most other teams.

Part of the reason is that the Bowles cleaner is scared snotless because of his history with the Jets. That paralyzed the team half way between Bowles’ desire for a defensive team and Licht’s desire for a Stupor Bowl like the last one, with a high offensive output.

Gotta get a base down before the season, not waffling at both extremes. A truly lost season that may be the beginning of another decade of depression.

  17. NEfan Says:

Frank Reich or O’Brien. Reid calls the shots in KC and Flores is also a defensive coach.

  18. Show Me the TDs Says:

The few on here that complain about Licht are idiots.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘The Bucs’ colossal underachievement this season, including three ugly upset losses, is not on general manager Jason Licht.’

I understand Joe that you’re attributing that to Kevin Ross, but oh ya, he’s wrong. Also wrong when he said ‘Personnel says Super Bowl’. Sorry Kevin, but personnel says 5-6 right now. Defensive coaching & personnel together says #6 ranking, allowing 18.5 PPG average despite multiple injuries all season long. Offensive coaching & personnel together says #27 ranking, scoring 18.2 PPG average, also suffering multiple injuries to key players. I’d say 5-6 seems just about right when you score fewer points (200) than you allow (203).

One of JL’s subordinate coaches may let him off the hook publicly, but the GM sign on his door tells me that Jason is the Architect of this mess. He’s the CEO & it’s his job to fix it if it’s not working as it should.

o JL’s the one responsible for hiring & firing. So WHY does BL still call plays as our OC?

o JL’s the one who dual-hatted Todd Bowles; Todd didn’t do that to himself. THAT was a major blunder & the kiss of death.

o JL paid extravagant dollars to injured players, mortgaged the future big-time, and skimped on DEPTH big-time also. Now it’s come back to haunt us. Whodathunkit?

Bowles is the scapegoat for all 3 of those bad decisions. He’s saddled with Byron & this ‘wannabe Super Bowl’ team isn’t going anywhere with him directing this offense. He’s in charge of a team starting Nick Leverett & Josh Wells to protect 45-year-old immobile Tom Brady, several WRs & TEs who are performing at average-at-best levels, and RBs who are ranked at the bottom of the league. And our defense is 1 DT injury away from disaster.
In what world does that scream ‘Super Bowl here we come?’

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Again, I ask… go through the Bucs losses, and you tell me which of these games that Arians loses if he’s the head coach instead of these two jacka–es.

    GB – NO
    KC – YES
    PIT – NO
    CAR – NO
    BAL – NO
    CLV – NO

So, do the math, the team is now 10-1, not 5-6.

The KC game, I just don’t think the Bucs win it no matter what as that was the KC ‘revenge’ game for the SB. So congrats KC, you won a week 4 regular season game, that’s quite the ‘revenge’, LOL!

In the Baltimore game people forget the defense was dominant in the first half and the Bucs had a bunch of chances to score, if they had done so, the Ravens have to keep passing and they were awful the entire first half when they just kept throwing the ball. Because the idiot Leftwich kept punting the ball, it allowed the Ravens to start running the ball, and that’s when all the backups on defense started to fall apart. But even if you want to say, no, Bucs lose that, they’re 9-2.

That’s the difference in coaching because these two gutless coward idiots running the team now, and a good coach.

  21. Your Mom Says:

Head coach and offensive coordinator were promoted past their ability. Arians covered for Leftwich’s lack of competence. Bowles should go back to being a defensive coordinator, he is a lousy head coach.

  22. Captain Oblivious Says:

    @DR

Nice bit of Monday morning quarter-backing there. Of course JL mortgaged the future for this season, the Bucs still have the GOAT. If healthy the Bucs roster had the talent for a SB run this season. Of course injuries have been a problem this season but the biggest problem is the coaching. I don’t think JL had the authority, or inclination, to reject Bowles as the HC or BL as the OC. Those were political decisions and everybody just hoped that they would work out. Unfortunately, they have failed in spectacular fashion. I don’t know why you keep defending Bowles, he is neither a leader nor a HC. I have been consistently critical of him since mid-2020 (the SB was a fluke because of KC’s decimated OL).

  23. NEfan Says:

DR, I know you’re a Bowles groupie but c’mon man you’re a stats guy. Bowles had 3 timeouts when the Bucs got the ball back with 37 seconds on their own 25. Within two plays they were on Clev 48. 13 seconds off the clock is two plays. Brady lives for these moments. Not to mention the two to’s not called in ot and the Rams blitz call. Licht had no part in tthat. I am soooo tired of hearing about the genius plan for the 2020 SB. Mahomes had a depleted line ( we are all witnessing what that does to an O) , Reids kid just arrested for involuntary manslaughter and DUI not to mention the three dropped passes that should of lead to scores.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

    Defense Rules Says:
….but personnel says 5-6 right now.

    ————

LOL! Vegas would disagree since they literally had the Bucs as the NFC SB favorite.

But you also though Chris Conte and Ryan Smith were good starters, so when it comes to evaluating personnel, you leave a lot to be desired.

I’m just funning with you, if by funning, I mean destroying.

  25. Woodenman Says:

Defence Rules you are an idiot.

  26. IE Buc Says:

Licht is directly responsible for the mess the OL has been this season. He should have signed Tretter and other OL help when the our starters went down. He didn’t bring back Suh or JPP on defense.

Licht signed questionable over the hill WRs when he should have noticed how Godwin wasn’t ready, and the offense was aging. WR corp needed youth. Yet he kept Perriman, Miller and cut Tyler.

The biggest failure Licht is responsible for is the current employment of Bowles and Leftwich. If they fail, he fails. For Licht to save the season, he has to fire Bowles and Leftwich right now. That he is ok with all the losing and coaching incompetence and doesn’t do anything about it, means he has to go as well.

  27. captivajim Says:

Licht & BA are the root of the Bucs problems..

–they promoted Bowleszo & gave him a FIVE yr contract
–they refused to trade for proven O-Line players last spring to replace Cappa & Marpet
    — they refused to trade for prove player to replace Jensen last Aug 1st

Joe , I think they deserve a good share of the credit for the Bucs performance this yr !

  28. Defense Rules Says:

Rod Munch … ‘So, do the math, the team is now 10-1, not 5-6.’

Ya you really ‘destroyed’ me Rod. I live in trepidation of sycophants like yourself who are so delusional that they believe this Bucs’ team is 10-1 when the rest of the world is telling them that they’re 5-6. I tutor some 2nd graders who are light years ahead of you in math. Some guy named Bill Parcells once said ‘You are what your record says you are’. But then again, he never met Rod Munch, did he. So what the he11 does he know?

And NEfan, get out of New England and come into the real world. What in heavens name does ‘Reids kid just arrested for involuntary manslaughter and DUI’ have to do with anything?

I do BTW stick up for Todd Bowles from the perspective that I think he’s a good DC overall. Dual-hatting him was the kiss of death as I said. Look back a few years. Lovie Smith finished out his time here dual-hatted as HC/DC. Failure. Dirk Koetter finished out his time here dual-hatted as HC/DC. Failure. Bruce Arians wore ONLY 1 hat: HC. Super Bowl & playoffs. And now we’re back to dual-hatting Todd Bowles. The Architect of all those was the same. As Dr Phil used to say … ‘And how’s that working out for you?’

  29. Thisisouryear!! Says:

DR- I think you are way off on this one. You’ve said over and over again we don’t have the dogs in the fight. The defense is there. They are better than last year. Yes we lost 3 offensive linemen but other teams go through this. Hainsey has filled in admirably for Jensen. Mason is a slight upgrade. You’re not going to replace Marpet but Leverett is playing well. It’s the offensive play calling and the lack of aggression. You can say it’s Lefty all you want but at the end of the day Bowles can do whatever he wants.

  30. Rod Munch Says:

Defense Rule – I listed the losses, tell me how they’re not 10-1 with Arians as head coach. Seriously, go game by game, and you tell me how we lose with Arians calling the shots instead of these two morons running the team now.

If you want to say 9-2, fine, we can disagree over the Ravens game, but outside of that, what game is an aggressive Arians team losing?

Just go loss by loss and let me know. I’m literally interested in how you can look at those loses and not put them on some of the dumbest coaching we’ve ever seen.

  31. Buczilla Says:

Despite his less than stellar free agent haul this year Licht is still the best gm in the league. I think that Suh was a tremendous loss as well as Marpet. I’m no offensive line expert, but I think that Smith misses the hell out of Ali and the help that he received from him. Chris is a pro bowler when healthy and he’s just now starting to come around. Brady is going through a life crisis and we lost our hall of fame coach to retirement only to be replaced by folks who have no business being in their current roles. Terrible season, but it will be a true nightmare if we keep any of these coaches around for next year.

  32. NEfan Says:

DR, SERIOUSLY??? His kid was an assistant coach and it happened SB week on his way from practice. Not sure if you have children or not but I do and that would sure screw my head up.You don’t remember Reid missing practice because of the incident?

  33. ChiBuc Says:

The revisionist history on here is ….well, stupid. Would of, could of, should of we’d be 10-1; if not for Reid’s loss, KC wins the superbowl; NEfan saying earlier in the week he couldn’t take it anymore, so “I’m out.” You guys twist your yarns as tight as your blunts, because your hazy reality vascilates with your own delusional self interests.

Reality: the bucs are 5-6; the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the KC Chiefs in the superbowl; and NE lingers on like an oblivious guest long past the end of the party

  34. ClwJB Says:

Unfortunately Kevin, the coaching says Toilet Bowl

  35. NEfan Says:

Said the monotonous Brady hater ChiBuc. Are you a male, female or both? And your posts are so intuitive and riveting?

  36. ChiBuc Says:

Not a Brady hater our lil Brokeback NEbradyfanboy.. “I can’t quit you jbf, even though I tried to make a dramatic exit n said I was going back to my NE homestead.”

“Are you a male, female or both?” Why you ask? You fishing? Better not let Tommy see you flirting with another man. More man than you can handle.

“And your posts are so intuitive and riveting?” Uh, is this a question or a statement? My answer is… yes and thank you.

Please do carry on with your singular love for the sport, Tom Brady.

  37. NEfan Says:

Chicluck, the fact you didn’t answer my question makes me assume you’re not sure yourself. That’s OK, I’m a open minded person. I do and will not deny I have been a Brady fan for years, though not to the extent of your simple mind. I am curious why you’re such a hater of a man that took your so called team out of the gutter and into the limelight.

I conclude one that despises one who achieves so much is either jealous of their success or so insecure in themselve they have to vent their dismay through alternate channels. Good luck with your challenges Chicluck.

  38. Charlie Dean Says:

Last time we had a defense head coach he couldn’t take us to the big dance. He was happy to sit on low scores and leave it to the defense to win it.

  39. Joe Says:

Last time we had a defense head coach he couldn’t take us to the big dance. He was happy to sit on low scores and leave it to the defense to win it.

The last time the Bucs had a defensive head coach he didn’t want to score points. And he didn’t have the defense to win anything but the No. 1 overall pick.

  40. Anonymous Says:

    Bowles is trash

  41. brooks Says:

    I needed a good laugh

  42. Purplepirate Says:

“tell me how they’re not 10-1 with Arians as head coach”

Because they were never 10-1 when he literally WAS the head coach with a younger and better offensive team.

  43. Will Says:

Old. Missing pieces. Suspect head coach. Brady to SF

  44. Day 1-76 Says:

It all comes down to Licht. He’s the GM. At the very least he needs to let the coaches know that they need to change their horrible strategies. He could also let Leftwich go away at any point.
