Bucs OC Byron Leftwich: “Obviously, We’re Doing Something Well Enough To Win Football Games, Right?”

December 8th, 2022

NFL math.

Yesterday, Bucs failing offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich was getting hit from all corners with questions about why he doesn’t use a hurry-up offense more since the Bucs offense is otherwise impotent without it.

The Bucs are one of the best teams moving the ball using a hurry-up or a no-huddle offense. In two of the last three wins, the Bucs had to run a fire drill/no-huddle/hurry-up offense in the final moments and save their skin.

Of course, Leftwich does not like direct questions concerning his offense or play-calling. Either he will get condescending to the local pen and mic club, play extreme dodgeball where his answer has nothing to do with the question, or he’ll flat out refuse to answer a question outside of a “No” or a “Yes” answer.

Or, as in today, Leftwich will rattle off pure word salad gibberish.

Yesterday, Leftwich tried to explain that no matter what offensive stat you hit him with, they are all “fantasy football” or “analytics” and he deals with real NFL football and the only stat that matters is the score.

Here was Leftwich’s dance routine in full when asked if there was one thing he would change about the Bucs’ stagnant offense.

“I just think it’s scoring – I know you guys think I’m crazy,” Leftwich began. “We have games where we go six drives and punt – I think we’re closer than what people think. Obviously, we’re doing something well enough to win football games, right?

“This is the National Football League, there’s no pushovers. Carolina, Pittsburgh, all of them have shown us that. Right? We’ve been on the opposite end of it – there’s no such thing as pushovers. In this league, this league is about winning. It’s only about winning in this league. It’s a lot that go on, a lot of narratives that happen, but this game is about winning. So we’re trying to do whatever we can to win.

“And as an offensive coordinator, as the offensive coach, I know the one thing that guarantees the win every week is scoring one more point than the other team. Even when it’s one more point, like last week, 17-16. It don’t matter the score. Find ways to win ballgames. If you can do that enough in ballgames, you learn how to win tough games. You learn how to win 17-16 games.

“I don’t know how good we were in the past at winning those type games. I think we’re better at finding ways to win those types of games because of the situations we’ve been in, good and bad. So I think we can learn from them, move forward from them, and I think all these situations has gotten us and made us a better ballclub.”

So you’ve got that? The Bucs offense is better than last year because they toy with other teams like a cat does a trapped mouse and at the last minute, he, Leftwich, the offensive coordinator, will put the other team out of its misery just to get a one-point win.

Now this may sound all well and good, that Leftwich and the Bucs offense only need to score a handful of points late to win. What Leftwich didn’t say is that’s pretty much impossible to do when your head coach takes the ball out of the hands of the greatest quarterback of all time, a master of the two-minute drill, and then let’s the clock run out in regulation with two timeouts in his back pocket.

But yeah, the Bucs offense is fine despite the Bucs being 6-6 and only by the grace of some mystical football being, the Bucs’ division opponents are even more dreadful.

But all is well in Leftwich’s mind, you fantasy football people and your weirdo numbers, you.

  1. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Mr. Leftwich, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone who is a Bucs fan is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points (much like your offense most of the time), and may God have mercy on your soul.

  2. Sal Says:

Leftwich is clueless at his job offense stinks #!! I guess he’s fine with being a 500 football team #!!

  3. Pewter Power Says:

    BL Uh what!!!!

  4. steele Says:

Thanks, Jeebs. Between Leftwich and Bowles, my candidates for the most self-justifying duo in the NFL, it’s exhausting to find coherent thoughts.

  5. EA Says:

BL is the kind of guy that believes his own BS.

  6. BucU Says:

Why haven’t we seen TB12 revolt against this guy who’s destroying the last chance we have at another SB? Why is he hugging him after Tom bails him out time and time again? Does Tom support Byron?
It sure looks that way to me and I don’t get that.

  7. Winny Testaverde Says:

I thought he was unlikable as a QB for The Bucs. He has taken it to a whole new level/low.

  8. lambchop Says:

He’s such a tool. If your ego is so big, no wonder we keep making the same mistakes. We never had to eek out a 1-point victory before because we were busy scoring throughout the game- to the tune of 30 points!

BA must be going senile to think BL was ready without supervision.

You know how you win games in the NFL? By not waiting around for the GOAT to bail you out! BL has a loser mentality and his playing career echos that.

  9. SPARKY Says:

You know, except for one of the greatest catches of the year by the Browns receiver on 4th down to tie the game and send us to overtime, we would have won 4 games in a row. But to think for one second that our offense in doing good, man, we are in trouble.

  10. Mike Says:

Man, talked about delusional. You should not have a job right now, period. You can spin it all you like. Your job is to put the offense in the best position to score points, and the results speak for themselves. There’s nothing else to be said about it. You’re not doing a good job. The offense is not doing a good job. Be a man and take responsibility. Hang your head in shame and tell us you’re going to fight like heck to make it right. That’s what leaders do.

  11. sasquatch Says:

He’s a total foocking dumbass! I guess he’s happy with being near the bottom of the league in scoring, with a mediocre 6-6 record with losses to some very weak teams. Loser.

  12. Adam's Angry Says:

“I think we’re closer than what people think.”

Yeah? How close? I’m waiting like patience on a monument over here…..

  13. Jmarkbuc Says:

This guy has to be fired.

  14. SufferingSince76 Says:

    We’re doomed.

  15. Kentucky Buc Says:

I’m speechless after that interview. Does he know what the teams record is ?

  16. CrackWise Says:

To be fair, he was the OC the last 3 years and us long time fans appreciate that.

HOWEVER, this is a what have you done for me lately league.

AND LATELY, Byron has been confirming what we all have seen the past 3 years. A Pet Rock is only as cool as its owner, and frankly Byrons owner is NO LONGER the HEAD COACH.

Byron, shape up or ship out. YOU ARE THE WEAKEST of WEAK links……

  17. Buczilla Says:

I love you Joes, but I couldn’t even finish the first paragraph of this story. Leftwich is the epitome of tone deaf and I have totally tuned his happy butt out.

  18. CrackWise Says:

Does ANYONE DOUBT, the only reason Brady showed up at the wrong house when he got to Tampa is because Byron gave him the WRONG address?

Just imagine how different things could have been if Brady walked into any NORMAL Americans house. Let’s keep it simple and just say, the Bucs would not have won the Super Bowl.

That ALONE should have gotten BYRON launched off the Ship.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    What a moron.

  20. Goatfarmer Says:

Please fire the boob yesterday. He and the Bowels of Todd make me sick.

  21. Oddball Says:

    Aaaaaah! Make it stop! Please!

  22. Larstatersalad Says:

Does he know they are 6-6? Man, dumb and arrogant is a bad combination.

  23. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

He’ll only work as hard as needs to and he just needs to get better at knowing how hard that is from game to game.

  24. Just Saying Says:

Clearly Byron sees nothing wrong with his product. Sadly he will be with this team at least though the end of the season. The patience and class Brady is showing by not leading a mutiny is beyond my comprehension. I hope Tom can take over enough of the offensive play calling to close out this season successfully, it would be such a shame to waste what could be his last year or last year with the Bucs.

  25. Steven007 Says:

The only thing that lens any creedence to what Leftwich says is the seeming fact that Brady seems to be okay with it. As far as we know. Or he’s very good at hiding it. So we don’t know obviously how bought in he is to the schemes. But it seems like he would have made it known one way or another by now that there is a rift between what the OC is doing and what Tom would prefer to do. Strange.

  26. Steven007 Says:

    ” lends any credence

  27. Nick Says:

    @Joe I have a question.

Do you think there’s any chance the Glaziers are currently exploring the opportunity of hiring Sean Payton?

They have to believe the Todd Bowles in Byron Leftwich are in totally over their heads.

  28. I’m not tired anymore we just won the Super Bowl!! Says:

Should have been fired on the spot after that statement…seriously WTF? I completely lost it at that last game and had to leave the offense was so bad. I was happy they came back and won but damn we looked God awful. I am still irked by that. But yup keep patting yourself on the back and see where that gets ya. Anyways. Go Bucs!

  29. Joe Says:

Do you think there’s any chance the Glaziers are currently exploring the opportunity of hiring Sean Payton?

Wouldn’t shock Joe if they sniffed around. Not sure how good of a job the Bucs are? How long can Brady keep playing? Will Brady want to stay here? Once Brady goes, who is the quarterback? Few veteran coaches who have their pick of jobs like Sean Payton will want to go to a team where next year, two years from now you don’t know who your quarterback is.

  30. Tye Says:

you are only as good as your last game…

3 points well into the 4th quarter AND the Saints running Back ran out of bounds instead of getting the 1st down… More of the Saints failure to finish games than it was the Bucs GETTING the win….

    Leftwich is so dense!

  31. Will Says:

See this is why I admire The Joes. There is no way on this green earth that I could sit and allow this guy to answer questions like this without going at him. The offense is awful and you’ve shown NO ability to correct things or the imagination to put players in a position to win. But every week you sit up here and talk about how you want to put guys in position to win and run out the same offensive strategy week in and week out.

  32. jd Says:

seriously how does Brady not see what idiots these two moron coaches are.

  33. jd Says:

duh??? which way did you go? Which way did you go? uh???

  34. Goatfarmer Says:

    Stupid be as stupid do.

  35. SKBucsFan Says:

This just reinforces the fact that TB12 needs to have the equipment guy disconnect the speaker in his helmet. The offense is way more effective when running a hurry up with little imput from Leftwich.

  36. Greg Says:

    Hey, Byron! Remember this part?

.07% Win probability vs. the Saints with 5:34 left (Credit:NextGenStats)

“We’re doing something well enough to win football games” Hmmmmmm

  37. Redeemer Says:

Oh dear lord. I read this and nearly spat out my coffee. Is he tone deaf, or just not that bright? Probably both. Why are these coaches always talking.

  38. ClwJB Says:

Where is the 2yard slant on 1st n goal?

Where are the 20 yard comebacks on 1 st n 10 from our 20 to jumpstart a no huddle drive

Where is the idea of taking at least 4 deep shots per game just to draw at least 1 or 2 PI calls even if not completing 1 or 2

Where is scheming open superior talent against inferior talent consistently especially when the opponent is on a 3rd team starter

All of these were staples of the BA offense

This years version is just BS

  39. Redeemer Says:

SK, exactly. Brady can just ignore the buzzing noise in his ear, and call the freaking game

  40. BucsFan81 Says:

It’s pretty clear at this point that these coaches were riding off the coat tails of Bruce Arians. He is the real mastermind. This idiot coaches need to go.

  41. mg Says:

    This guy is a boob.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

I’m glad that everyone is getting on the hate Leftwich wagon. Been heading this wagon since 2016 when this idiot was ruining Winston’s career, and even with Brady bailing out Leftwich, he was still an idiot. Now he’s proving what a worthless piece of trash he is.

Also, Leftwich, you’re NOT winning, that’s the problem. If the team was 10-1, then you could talk, but it’s 6-6, .500, not a winning team, moron.

  43. MadMax Says:

Well, off topic but that was a great comeback by Baker Mayfield and the rams….even though i dont like them, that was a fun ending. 2 days on the team and does that…nice!

  44. Rod Munch Says:

BTW, watching Mayfield beat the Raiders, I was laughing my a– off. Carr is a perfect QB for Leftwich, Carr is also a loser that is happy winning 16-10, which is why the Raiders just lost 17-16. Losers think 16 points is plenty, and let the defense do all the hard work.

Carr and Leftwich, both born losers.

  45. MadMax Says:

oh, this was supposed to be about byyyyyroooooooon! (remember the movie Friday)

  46. Cchead Says:

Blowes and lefty a complete idiots.

  47. Alanbucsfan Says:

You guys are crazy with the hate.
Bucs have won 3 of 4 and have a good chance against a rookie QB with a weak arm.
True, the team has struggled on offense, but they’re fighting.
Coaches haven’t lost the players, despite some questionable game management.
Let’s see what happens the next 2 weeks.

  48. MadMax Says:

Ooops, my bad, that was from madeas big happy family….its been a while, sorry lol

  49. mg Says:

    Impossible to fix stupid

  50. Goatfarmer Says:

Maybe Bowels will have Left his stale Sandwich in Tampa when the team goes to San Francisco, and Tom will have to call the plays.

Time for the Glazers to issue some executive orders.

  51. Turbo Says:

BL executing the Jameis quotes vibe to perfection

  52. StretchOMatic Says:

    Total arrogant loser.

  53. Rod Munch Says:

    Alanbucsfan Says:
Bucs have won 3 of 4 and have a good chance against a rookie QB with a weak arm.

    ———

The issue is they’ve should have won 11 of their last 12.

Also, I just watched what the 49ers did to a much better Dolphins team, and they destroyed them. Now the 49ers are inconsistent (they lost, on the road, to the Falcons), but they have a great pass rush, and even with Arians here, Brady didn’t do well if the pressure got to him. If you think the Bucs should win this game, well, you’re wrong. The Bucs should be about 7 point underdogs – I have no idea what the line is, but I’m guessing it’s like Bucs +3, but that’s only because of the Brady factor.

Going back to the record, I’ve asked the Bowles / Leftwich defenders again and again to answer the following truthfully, and so far none of them have.

If Arians as still the headcoach, which of our loses do you think we’d still lose?

    GB – NO
    KC – YES
    PIT – NO
    CAR – NO
    BAL – NO
    CLV – NO

That makes the team 11-1 right now, not 6-6.

You can quibble about the Ravens game, but the Bucs dominated the 1st half and if Arians was there, they’d have been up big. But heck, I’ll give it to you, and you’d still be 10-2. That’s worst case scenario with a good head coach, and Leftwich not ruining his team by NOT running Arians offense, and instead running his awful, stupid version of Arians offense. Bowles, I didn’t have much of an issue with until that Cleveland game, when he single handedly cost the team the game with his cowardly gutless decision not to use his timeouts.

  54. Rayjay1122 Says:

And this is why I have checked out as a passionate fan and am in the casual observer club until we get an actual NFL coaching staff. Pfffft

  55. Coburn Says:

Bring back Arroyo! Lol. Would be nice if guys were a little more real, a little more humble, a little more self aware and willing to own up

  56. MadMax Says:

Ive never seen a Leftwich interview until just now….whoa, wow. No wonder we’re in shambles,,,,lolmfao this is stupid!!!

Licht and Glazers….when are you going to do something about this?

  57. AbucAway Says:

Translation: That which does not kill us, makes us stronger.
We win by becoming stronger? Mentally. Emotionally. Physically.
He not only is training the offense, he’s also training the fans at the same time. We have to be tough to weather this coaching staff. Haha

That leaves us fans with only the Serenity Prayer as a shield against ‘The Mastermind’.

  58. Kalind Says:

Yea. Half of them, you twit. Goodness this guys gotta go. Now. Already. Yesterday.

  59. frankbucsfan Says:

evidently this doofus thinks that 6 and 6 is “good enough”. for him maybe, not the rest of us !!

  60. NEfan Says:

Why are those teams he listed pushovers for other teams in the NFL. So the strategy is to put your team behind the eight ball then HOPE the O can close it out at the end of the game? How.dies this arsewipe have a job? He wouldn’t if BA didn’t eff the Bucs over by forcing him and the other dip shat down Glazers throat.

  61. NEfan Says:

He played for the Jaguars, what do you expect?

  62. NEfan Says:

Joe, how many members of the media left scratching their heads after that interview. He would have been better off saying. Brady must be befriending him because he needs to play the moron from time to time. After this interview I am wondering if DR could be right and Bowels is just regurgitating what Byron is telling him and the O change is all on Leftnuts.

  63. Richard Dickson Says:

If the offense scores just five more points in each game, we’re 10-2 right now.

  64. D-Rok Says:

I saw his interview on the Bucs site yesterday about 1500. I was as stunned as Joe was at first, then I started laughing hysterically after I listened to it a 2nd time. Even Mrs. D-Rok said he spoke like an idiot.

At the very least, public-speaking skills are not his forte…

  65. Jeff Says:

    Bumbling Bryon is clown stupid!

  66. uhmmm Says:

    CLOWN

  67. Bucamania Says:

I know Byron isn’t big on numbers but your offense is near the bottom of the league in points scored and explosive plays. If not for Tom Brady it would be unwatchable.

  68. PewterStiffArm Says:

Several things to unwrap here. First as a coordinator you always put your offensive play calling two steps ahead of the anticipated defense. Step number two, learn singular and plurals while speaking the English language.

  69. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    He’s clueless. And dumb.

  70. Darin Says:

If he means more losses than wins at years end then he’s onto something, finally. Good dammmm how’d we get stuck with this idiot all season. Pull the effing plug Joel!!

  71. Manny Says:

Jeebs, i like the billy madison quote. Leftwich sounds like an idiot. We arent winning anything because of him. If it wasnt for the defense, im afraid what our record would be

  72. Marc Coppola Says:

Yea… the no huddle…. where YOU don’t call the plays

  73. garroman Says:

Obviously, we’re doing something well enough to win football games, right?

That’s right up there with The great Bill Russell once saying on air…”The team that wins is usually the team that scores the most points”…but Russell I think was joking.

    Man. Glazers are you listening?
