Larry Foote Never Saw Rotten Run Defense Coming

December 16th, 2022

Talks Bucs run defense.

One reason Joe thought the Bucs would give the 49ers a game last week is that the Bucs had been playing decent defense. Maybe even good defense.

And of course, a Todd Bowles-run defense is usually stingy against the run.

Instead, the 49ers took the Bucs’ defense to the woodshed. San Francisco’s front line just kicked the Bucs’ tail up and down the field.

Joe remembers one particular Christian McCaffrey run where he ran off left tackle, Joe had his binoculars keyed in on the Bucs defensive line. On that particular run, McCaffrey had three wide holes to choose from. It was both impressive and sad.

The way the 49ers stomped the Bucs’ run defense really took Bucs outside linebackers coach Larry Foote by surprise.

“No, not at all,” Foote said of the way San Francisco ran the ball down the Bucs’ throats. “I never imagined that with those guys in that locker room.

“But I’m not surprised because that can happen in this league any given Sunday. I expect those guys to rebound this week, but I never expect those guys to have that type of performance [last week]. But we’ll be ready this week.”

Well, if the Bengals do to the Bucs on the ground what the 49ers did, it’s a five-alarm fire for Tampa Bay.

The Bengals have a decent running game. And while the Bengals’ front line is played a lot better ball of late than they were in September, it would really, really shock Joe if the Bengals manhandle the Bucs’ run defense.

Success is one thing. Domination is quite another.

Just put in Plan 9 to plug those holes.

  2. Guzzie Says:

Guys I get being optimistic but seriously this team is not good top to bottom, we have decent pieces, no one is a superstar we can count on, Brady doesn’t have the OL to carry the team, he’s no where near the top QBs, he’s just not, our WRs rarely make game changing plays, our RBs don’t either, TE forget about it, defensively we get manhandled by good offenses, bad offenses we can handle but we act like this defense is dominating, it’s not

  3. Bucsfanman Says:

Guzzie- You’re not wrong but, this season, it feels like all we can do is be optimistic because of how poorly they’ve played.

And sorry Joe but, Foote must be blind because this team has struggled against the run for most of the season and the 49ers are KNOWN to be a running powerhouse team.
I will take this opportunity to inject that the running game is still alive and well in our “passing league”. If you don’t, or can’t, run the ball you don’t win many games (see 6-7!).

  4. EA Says:

    I blame Gerald Mccoy

  5. Cchead Says:

    JTS is NFG

  6. ClwJB Says:

Funny thing Larry, we ALL knew you were going to get blasted and you did just as suspected

How about all you coaches just look in the mirror and realize you wasted the season and you will have a new job next year

As soon as the boss left, the overpromoted subordinates have set this team ablaze like burning 💩 on a doorstep

  7. Mike C Says:

    EA…….. THAT is hilarious!

  8. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

The biscuit has gone stale. The Bowles Leftwich circle jerk shet show has ruined this team. The faces on the players come game day reflect the no confidence in twiddle dee and twiddle dum.

  9. alton green Says:

“and I opened my do to my enemies. I asked if we could wipe the slate clean. so they told me to go fu*& myself. sometimes you just can’t win.” (Pink Floyd) If Todd and Lefty ask to keep their jobs, that is what the GM should say to them hahahha
I’ve been watching for 6 decades, (for Todd and Lefty that’s 60 yrs)after about 5 games. I was screaming at the TV “WHAT THE FRICK ARE YOU DOING?” I’m still still screaming at the TV.

  10. Beej Says:

Entire defensive line was invisible during that game, not seen that from this team since the 80’s. Do we normally have two DT’s in at once?

  11. NEfan Says:

Did he miss the Carolina, Baltimore games? That 9ers O is crazy good, crossing patterns, motion, play action, the oline protects the QB. Purdy doesn’t throw past 20 yds it’s all underneath and their wr’s are wide open. That is what a real O should look like. You don’t have to be a superstar QB to be on that team. It also helps when your D is stifling.

Todd & co should stop watching Bucs tapes and watch the 9ers, that’s how it’s done on both sides of the ball.

  12. Kentucky Buc Says:

    The Niners have a line

  13. Iamabuc Says:

That’s what happens when your DC and OC coaches are Pinky and Brain….🤦

  14. Iamabuc Says:

..you want to conquer the world, but your plan always backfire…😂😂😂

  15. Beej Says:

“are YOU pondering what I’M pondering?”
“Yes Brain but how do we put the stockings on the chicken?”

    That show killed me

  16. BuxfaninTX Says:

With either Hicks or Vea out of the game, there is no run D.

  17. PewterStiffArm Says:

Rotten run defenses don’t produce overnight. The stagnation develops over a long period of time, hence the trickle of inconsistency through out the year. This defense isn’t fighting anymore, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, even Bora Bora is on their minds. If they don’t show up this weekend against Cincinnati we won’t be worrying about the playoffs, we will be analyzing our position in the draft.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You need to look no further than our last 2 top draft picks…….just how much are we getting from JTS & Hall?……..not much.

  19. dmatt Says:

Will someone please explain to me the reason JTS is in the nfl? This guy can’t tackle, consistently gets juked by receivers, te, or any runner, and is manipulated and deceived by OT. He has size n speed n is clueless on how to use both which is also a blame that goes out to the coaches. I’m tired of watching him look confused n lost on plays.

  20. D-Rok Says:

I fear the Bengals are gonna gash our run D this week also. Prove me wrong, Bucs, PLEASE!!

Our D, when healthy, is competitive and sometimes good. With all the injuries we have on D, it’s hard to imagine us playing good this week. Perhaps if we get all starters back for last 3 games, maybe we have a chance at the playoffs.

The D just needs to hold ’em to under 13, and our O will take over from there and win us a bunch of games! #Sarcasm

    GO BUCS!!!

  21. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

The 49ers are just a superior team, top to bottom. Not only do they have better players, but they are much better coached as well.
John Lynch has built a literal monster of a team, that really has no weaknesses.
NFL stands for “Not For Long” and the game has passed us by.
We are no longer an elite team, in fact we are not very good at all!
Even if we do win this terrible division, we will be one and done in the playoffs.
Cincinnati will literally destroy us this Sunday.
In a way, it may be better for us to not win the division, because that will certainly mean the return of our current coaching staff, and General Manager.
Brady will certainly be gone next year, so it is time for a total rebuild of our team.
IMHO, the higher draft picks from a losing record will be far more important then a playoff game we are not going to win anyway.

We had our run, but it is over, Time to rebuild our team with a new General Manager and coaching staff.

  22. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

    Bengals all the way.

  23. Jack Sparrow Says:

So many coaches for every position and yet nobody has an idea how to win.

  24. Marine Buc Says:

    A. Hicks = huge disappointment…

    We should have re-signed Suh.

I didn’t expect much from rookie L. Hall but he has also been a bit of a disappointment.

    V. Vea is good when healthy but when is this dude ever fully healthy?

Not to mention the inconsistent play of LB Devin White…

  25. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Jack Sparrow.

    EXACTLY.

  26. CChead Says:

    NEfan….100%
    Ken Dorsey Head Coach 2023

  27. Jmarkbuc Says:

About had enough of the J Licht experience.

I realized that nobody bats 1000, but he’s really bad. He’s only hung on this long by riding others coattails.

  28. Capt.Tim Says:

    Really Larry?
You replace all pro JPP with JTS
You replace All pro Suh with the invisible Logan Hall
    You lose experienced Lbers.
Hicks is great. When he’s healthy, whens hes next to Vea.

Of course the run defense was gonna be bad.
Just like replacing 2 all pros with two first time starters on the O-line.
How can anyone not see this collapse?
    We cant beat the Bengals.
We should beat the lowly Falcons and Panthers.
8-9. Like I posted in the Pre Season.
Crawl into the playoffs, and get curb stomped
Even worse- probably by the slimy Cowboys.
How can anyone be surprised by this train wreck

  29. SPARKY Says:

It’s upsetting to watch the 49ers offense and defense. On offense it’s men in motion, crossing patterns, quick slants, fake screens, sweeps, and great blocking. On defense it’s great tackling and everybody running full speed to the ball. Bowles should take the film of that game and make the team watch it 8 hrs every day. The coaching difference is night and day. One more thing bothering me… has anyone else noticed that Brady never audibles out of plays anymore? The old tapping the helmet, putting someone in motion, yelling out play changes, seems like he knows just pick the best match up and hope the guy can get seperation in 2 seconds.

  30. Joseph C Simmons Says:

It’s funny, John Lynch built that Niner team in the exact mold of the Tony Dungy Bucs teams. He prioritizes defensive line over everything. He overdrafts for the position. He wants a pass rush for just four, with the ability to substitute.

Plus, they believe in pounding the ball with a running attack. He drafts or obtains running backs to plug and play.

The difference between these Niners and our old Bucs is that the Niners have an outstanding playcaller and a creative offense where wide receivers can play running back (Deebo and Aiyuk) and running backs can play wide receiver (CMC) and there are tons of plays where the QB doesn’t have to make a read because the intended receiver is wide-ass open.

I predict the Niners will beat the Eagles and make it to the Super Bowl.

  31. Crickett Baker Says:

Joseph..those 49ers looked like they could win a Super Bowl for sure!

  32. captivajim Says:

we’ll be posting for the next 3 yrs why bowleszo should be fired…

  33. LakelandSteve Says:

I’m with Chris, it’s better that we don’t win the division. We will surely lose in the playoffs and then next year will probably be a fire sale. At least we would have a shot at a top 15 draft pick and start the rebuild, hopefully with a new head coach.
