Cannot Let Brock Purdy Get Cocky

December 11th, 2022

How to defend 49ers’ rookie QB.

Last week when discussing how to defend the 49ers and Mr. Irrelevent, Brock Purdy, Bucs coach Todd Bowles had an interesting take on how to gameplan against a guy with very limited film.

Purdy, a rookie, is making his first start because Jimmy GQ injured his foot last week.

Bowles said you have to prepare for Kyle Shanahan’s scheme, not so much Purdy. Joe thought that was intriguing.

But Bucs corner Jamel Dean added another layer. He believes, yes, you prepare for the scheme, but you still have to worry about Purdy. First is that if San Francisco had no faith in the guy, then he wouldn’t be starting. But Dean’s second reason perked Joe’s ears.

“You still have to worry about the whole thing,” Dean said about the defense prepping for Purdy, too. “All it takes for him is to build confidence. Then, he can go anywhere with it.”

Savvy take by Dean.

Joe also mentioned to Dean how the Bucs’ defense has been good ball of late despite losing their best pass rusher, Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett.

Dean smiled, looked at Joe and said, “Next man up!”

    Not worried about young qb…
49ers defense and the bucs 3 and out offense does!

  2. Crickett Baker Says:

From what I have heard he is already cocky. We will need to take him down a peg or two. Maybe Vea can do it if he is playing.

  3. Leopold Stotch Says:

I remember watching him play some real clunker games at iowas state. He’d do well for a drive or two then play like crap. He’s a game manager based on college. Unless Iowa’s offense is that awful that it held him back, I’m not worried about him. I’m worried about Bowles being a coward with the defense and building confidence for Purdy and our offense being handicapped as well.

  4. Proudbucsfan Says:

I have no faith that we win this game, it’s sickening how this offense goes from being top 5 to bottom 5 in one season and it’s all because of one man
Toad Bowl, never fix something that isn’t broke. This coach owes it to the fans to take the hand cuffs off of this offense. This team only has so many opportunities with Brady to win championships.

  5. SufferingSince76 Says:

As long as Bowles is responsible for the game plan, I will have zero faith in our ability to win. Last year, I expected a win every game. This year, not so much.

  6. NEfan Says:

I really hate the fact the Bucs are underdogs against a kid playing his 1st start. That’s sad, this team has a lot of talent. Bucs wr’s for whatever reason don’t do well on wet fields, maybe it’s from not practicing for inclement weather, idk but they don’t. Stop the run Bucs have a chance, Brady used to be the best in bad conditions, let’s see if the soft Tampa practice design has softened him up. Win with NO injuries!

Maybe we can beat them with playing great special teams today. I’m glad we elevated Deven Thompkins. He’s something special. Some one need to make a play. We need to get away from thinking we must play a draft pick who’s not playing well over a rookie free agent waiting to showcase his skills.

Predicting a convincing win today. Why? It’s the furthest thing from possible.

  9. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Purdy played at Iowa State, and was nothing special, mainly because the team around him was nothing special.
Purdy is an athletic Quarterback, who ran a 4.7 40 Yard Dash at the NFL Combine.
He also has an NFL Arm, or he would not be playing QB for the 49ers.
He has Tons of weapons, a great running game, and a good O Line.
The 49ers are good enough to beat most any NFL Team w/o heroic Quarterback play.
All he has to do is be a game manager today, most likely.

With that stout D, all the guy has to do is manage the game and not make dumb mistakes.

    9ers, 24-6.

  11. Beej Says:

Do we know who’s doing returns?

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

Our Bucs are notorious for letting backups run all over them. We may be no 1 in the NFL in this category. This Kid is solid. Our D is gonna have to really bring it.

Dean is #1 CB he is passing Carlton by. ✌🏽

I’m calling trick play(s) on the Niners first drive, a reverse and/or flea flicker, especially if Joe Tryon starts. Devin White: Don’t worry about stats, worry about playing sound football.
