Todd Bowles Addresses Julio Jones’ Health & Contribution

November 1st, 2022

Julio Jones

Head coach Todd Bowles issued sort of a State Of Julio address tonight on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

Many Bucs fans still haven’t processed that Jones played four quarters Thursday night after being a “gametime decision” due to his recovering knee that was injured opening day in Dallas.

Julio scored the Bucs’ lone passing touchdown and logged 39 snaps. He looked rather strong and many would still argue that his late deep catch against the Ravens wrongly was overturned by referees.

Bowles said Julio is not fully recovered but he’s strong enough to make an impact.

“I thought it was good enough for him to go out there,” Bowles began. “Obviously, [his knee] wasn’t 100-100 [percent] but, you know, just having his presence out there brought some people up and he flashed some things and hopefully gets better and better from there.

“[When] we brought him in he was pretty healthy. You know, he was flying around. He was running around and he was the Julio of old. You know, injuries started catching up a little bit here and there and kind of nicked him up, which slowed him down quite a bit. So we gotta give him the time to heal. But at the same time, we have guys that can perform and make plays while he’s not out there.”

Before kickoff, also on the Buccaneers Radio Network, general manager Jason Licht cryptically explained that Julio’s knee injury is “tricky”  and affects his ability to start and decelerate.

Regardless, the Bucs need Jones now. The season is on the line. Bucs officials talked about playing the long game with Julio’s recovery weeks ago, sort of assuming the team would be playing meaningful games in January.

As of today, they need to be more concerned about playing meaningful games at the end of November.

Julio has been hurt, but perhaps he will catch fire against the Rams ?
This upcoming game is nearly a must win game for us, and is a winnable game.
The Rams have an even worse offense than we do, and last I heard Cooper Cupp is injured.

  2. Goatfarmer Says:

Neither Toad’s Bowel nor Bmoron should be allowed to address the media. It just brings everyone down. Fans, players, media. Hopefully ownership and management, also.

  3. Bucsfan13 Says:

I just read the new depth chart, and Julio is listed as WR3. Gage is nowhere to be found. When we signed Julio, Bowles said he was expected to replace some of Gronk’s production. That hasn’t been the case this year.

  4. Bucanero Says:

Who cares about the season. That Rams game had to be marked on every Bucaneer schedule since May. We have to win this game.

  5. Goatfarmer Says:

We will lose this game, it will be over by halftime, maybe early 3rd quarter. No pride, no heart, no fight, no one cares.

  6. Beeej Says:

I’ve seen the stats about the lack of separation our receivers are getting…Godwin hasn’t fully come back yet, I expect Evans always has an extra defender nearby making a medium to deep throw iffy…as far as the REST of the guys, HOW did slower guys like Larry Fitzgerald manage to grab catches well into his later 30’s? Even as a rookie he was 4.5 in the 40

  7. D-Rok Says:

Inability to start/stop always denotes a torn/ruptured tendon in knee. Also possibly a meniscus tear that clicks. Those words indicate knee instability. Let’s hope his knee heals quickly as I fear that our season hinges on Julio’s knee.

If our top 3 WR’s can produce, we can slowly get back to being a productive offense. With Gage AWOL, we need Julio to some extent.

  8. Cchead Says:

Wtf is that on hos head?

    FIRE BOWLES AND CO.

  9. CrackWise Says:

My only QUESTION is, will BA PLEASE roam the sidelines for this game. PLEASE!!!

  10. Bucs since 76 Says:

If Jones wasn’t 100% why run on a end around to get first down on a short yardage play?

Goat, I care, and you’re pissing me off. Put me in, Coach Goat! I gonna do damage!

    LOL

  12. D-Rok Says:

    Bucs since 76,

Lefwhich done said recently Julio done done what he did in Week 1, so he was gonna do what he do in Week 8. It’s elementary logic, my man, according to BL. That’s why he ran that jet sweep.

It was a retarded play-call, if you ask me.

  13. DBS Says:

Lose the next 2 games and the tank is on. Who can do the better job? Bucs or Panthers.

  14. Redeemer Says:

PCL injuries are often hard to evaluate. The ligament is located very deep inside the knee joint. It was a mistake to play Julio against the Chiefs. If that injury isn’t properly rested, it will flare. Exactly who is Bowles talking about when he says, we have guys that can make plays if he isn’t in there?

  15. NCBucfan Says:

Just win this game. I don’t want to think playoffs(even in this crap division), just win one game!! Que Jim Mora!!

  16. ClwJB Says:

If the payback factor doesn’t immediately show itself Sunday, we will know the season is lost

This team ended our season last year in an embarrassing fashion

There better be a major sense of urgency to win this game – if not, just clean house

  17. SB~LV Says:

Julio looked pissed his number was called for that play and sure enough it was not a wise type of risk as he never returned

  18. Rod Munch Says:

It’s good he played, but he still didn’t look close to being anywhere near 100%, or 80%, maybe he’s 50%. Still, 50% of Julio is better than 120% of Miller or Perriman.

  19. D-Rok Says:

    Redeemer,

As an ex-Ortho Tech who worked for an Ortho Surgeon, and as an ex-Army Medic, your are right about the posterior cruciate ligament. However, any tear of any knee ligament is easily seen on a routine MRI. This should’ve been diagnosed by now – – has his PCL been diagnosed? If so, I hadn’t heard yet.

  20. NCBucfan Says:

I want to see D White play with passion and fiery! It’s been missing, and that’s not good since he’s pretty much the qb of the D.

  21. ClwJB Says:

As a side note – the fact we made no moves in the trade market stinks out loud

We need pass rush help, could have used a spark player on O

Standing pat with our performance thus far seems very risky or somebody knows something we don’t about ‘23

  22. Redeemer Says:

D-Rok, it’s been widely reported. Makes sense because as you know, most are from direct trauma to the knee. He did it landing on it against Dallas.

  23. D-Rok Says:

PS: Speaking of diagnosis, WHERE IS ONE ON JENSEN?

  24. D-Rok Says:

Copy that, Redeemer. I forgot I had read weeks ago it was his PCL. Good call, bro.

  25. Redeemer Says:

I always thought Jones was nothing more than a flyer. If he stayed healthy, great. But counting on a guy who can’t stay healthy is plain stupid.

  26. Redeemer Says:

I think we’ll see Jensen sometime within the next 3 weeks, that is if the season isn’t over by then.

  27. D-Rok Says:

OK guys I just had a lightbulb go off:

Weeks ago Julio injured his PCL. Obviously surgery wasn’t gonna help, only time and rest would, so that’s why Bowles said a few weeks ago we gonna put Julio on ice until the playoffs. Time to heal. Bowles aint done much right but this was smart – I’d rest Julio with a PCL until playoffs, too. Maybe there’s hope?

  28. SB~LV Says:

    The Lost Season

  29. Goatfarmer Says:

D-Rok, first of all, you’re in. The fact that you care puts you ahead of Diva White on the depth chart.

Second of all, playoffs ? PLAYOFFS?!?!?!!!!!?????

    ——

Jensen, if he comes back this year, it won’t be until sometime in December.

The good news, if Jensen did get back and the Bucs are still in the playoff hunt, is that you can move Hainsey to guard right away since he was training as a guard this offseason, and the move from center to guard is normally pretty easy. I’m not as down on the young guards as the nutjobs here, but still, Hainsey has been very solid, and almost certainly would be, at worst, a stabilizing force.

  31. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Bowles translation:
He looked good in camp but now he’s hurt- he may get healthier later but the subs have to step up for now-
The subs haven’t stepped up so that’s not very reassuring.

  32. MadMax Says:

Welp! Asleep at the wheel….thy murdered season done!

No trades….couldnt afford them anyways, thy song is sung!

Capitulation, no reservations, just tick tick, tick tick!

The clock counts down its final rounds, cathartic and sad, the GOAT’S last moments…..

    I hate this!

    ———

Julio caught a redzone TD this past week.

But he’s only played like half of one game before this last week.

Gage is, once again, injured. I was never ever ever as high on him as others on this board, the ones talking about him as if he could start for other teams, but again, it’s hard to say he’s a bust when he hasn’t played that much. In the one game where he had to play, and was still injured, vs the Packers, he was productive, even if the idiot cost us the game with his fumble. Lets see where we are when/if he ever gets healthy.

  34. Goatfarmer Says:

    Bowels translation:

    Drrr……burp…..uhh…….well…….drrrr…….execution.

  35. SB~LV Says:

    Gage
    At least Bert Emmanuel played

  36. Listnfrmafar Says:

Shat show, now we are relying on Jenson to make things right. Resigned Darden, what I got from that is Bowels, BL & Licht have to go!!!

  37. Rod Munch Says:

Alanbucsfan – Well everyone, at least those with a brain, knew Julio’s signing was a lottery ticket. If healthy, you’re getting a very good, if no longer elite, WR, who should be #4 on the depth chart. Of course you could take that risk on Julio because you had just signed Gage as your #3.

Then, of course, Godwin is already injured and really hasn’t looked like himself this year (although vs the Ravens I thought he looked better). Then Gage gets hurt. Then Julio gets hurt. Then Perriman is always hurt. But at least you got Scotty Miller around to start the Packers game…

  38. Adrnagy Says:

If bowles is fire I want Sean Payton

  39. Adrnagy Says:

I gave up on julio. I mean I gave him the Benefit of coming in and winning a ring (motivation) but that the reverse run fail I gave up. The guy picking up his own body parts.

If bowles is fire I want Sean Payton

    ———

Payton is under contract with the Saints – and there is zero chance they’d let him out of that deal, or trade him, to the Bucs.

  41. Adrnagy Says:

Rod I’m ok with throwing draft picks. I bet you want lefty as HC

  42. Adrnagy Says:

Its not like licht is hitting home runs with 1st rounders. It seems they’re more like 2-4 yr projects

  43. Panhandle Buc Says:

“Nicked up” &’”slowed down”…yet a jet sweep on a crucial play was the call?? Clown show!!!

  44. PassingThru Says:

Julio is old. That means he is injury-prone and slow to heal. That should be expected whenever you sign an oft-injured, 33 year old WR.

    Shocking, huh?

  45. steele Says:

I’d like Todd Bowles to address Todd Bowles’ contribution. I’d like Glazers to address Todd Bowles’ contribution.

  46. Carl L Says:

Please folks, don’t bet on the Bucs to cover against the Rams. Let us win one in a row.

  47. Destinjohnny Says:

The Bucs having missed on so many wideout draft picks have been forced to get aging vets who are shells of their former selfs

  48. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as: BringBucsBack) Says:

Listening to Bowles speak makes me appreciate and long for a Belacheat-esqe 1-3 word answer; it spares us from this circular, contradictory, psycho-babble we are hearing now.

  49. John Mason Says:

Joe…..Trade deadline passed and Buc’s did nothing….makes no sense…..who will replace Shaq Barrett…..Joe T. is not there yet
WTF….I thought the Buc’s were all in. We are so screwed!

  50. LakelandSteve Says:

Glad to here that Julio and his trick knee are almost 100%. What do you want to bet the Rams offense comes to life against the Bucs. It seems like the Bucs defense is just what the doctor ordered against these “struggling” offenses.

  51. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

    Just win !

  52. Goatfarmer Says:

    A win?

Maybe hope for a collision with an asteroid. Higher probability.

Fans should not bother to show and the ones who do need a good “Fire Leftbowelswich” chant going.

    Naa.

Too complex. Like Toad’s defense that none of his players can execute.

Just yell “BYE-RONNNNN…..BYE-RONNNNN” over and over and over and over and over. Don’t quit. Unlike Diva White.

  53. captivajim Says:

so, leftwich calls 4 an end around using a guy with a bad knee that limits his ability to “start” .. !!!

and people wonder why the Bucs look flat , demoralized ??

  54. alton green Says:

nice hair-do Julio. You look like a green onion

  55. Bucobill99 Says:

No one saw this coming its not like hes been hurt the last 5 years or anything

  56. Posey99 Says:

Overall poor oversight imo. Julio<Tyler Johnson. Hicks<Suh. And it’s not like injuries were random there’s clear history with both. Don’t mess with something that isn’t broken and mess up rhythm.

  57. Bobby Says:

Season is over. This team has given up, management didn’t make any trades, they have given up. Going to need lots of big storm beers to be able to watch this train wreck.

  58. BucU Says:

The big question. Can the Bucs make the playoffs?
Some say yes. Some say no.
We’ll have some clarity on that on Sunday around 7:30pm.
