More Evidence Someone With Bucs Doesn’t Know How To Scheme A Running Game

November 27th, 2022

Bucs OC Bryon Leftwich.

It’s real simple. It’s either the players or the coaches.

There is just no way you can tell Joe the Bucs have such a bad offensive line — and bad running backs — that they cannot run the ball. Yet prior to the win over Seattle, the Bucs were on pace for the worst rushing attack in over half a century.

Think of truly rotten Bucs teams of the past and they ran the ball better. So since it’s not the players, that kind of limits the choices, doesn’t it?

Over at Sharp Football Analysis, Rich Hribar documented yet another example of how rotten the Bucs run game has been.

30.1% of the Tampa Bay rushing attempts have gained five or more yards, the lowest rate in the league.

Well, a cynic like Joe would suggest running up the middle all the time, often on first down, makes it hard to run for five or more yards.

Simply put, the Bucs miss former Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians and his red pen. That’s all there is to it.

Unless the win over Seattle, where the Bucs found a running game (for one game at least) is the beginning of a trend, Joe thinks it is fair to suggest whoever is developing the gameplans doesn’t know how to scheme a running attack.

Joe really hopes the Bucs prove him wrong.

They have a run game coordinator but it seems they don’t have very many run plays in the playbook. Even when we had a very good OL BL still loved to run the ball to the left on 1st down
I go back to the Rams game in LA when Jameis was the QB we won that game but that’s when I noticed the run on 1st to the left was BL go to play

  2. Tim Says:

Leftwich always seems to have a dumb look on his face. He may be great, but if so, it doesn’t show through. He seems to me like he never should’ve been elevated to this position. Maybe he’d be better as a position coach, or a college coach somewhere.

  3. Buccos Says:

Leftwich was the OC when we won the Super Bowl. Mic drop

  4. Crickett Baker Says:

Yah but he took half of this year before he figured out it was a different team than 2020-2021 (if he has figured it out yet).

  5. b4l Says:

Notice also, when they do make a couple of good runs on first down, they will then start running on first and second down also. What kind of nonsense is that? Do they have any concept of play action and how to use it? Very strange way to manage it.

  6. Tim Says:

Arians was the Head coach until last year. The offense was good…until last year. Mic drop

  7. BucsfanFred Says:

The Brown stains are also poor run defenders so we’ll probably run ok today.
That kinda reminds me of an old Dilbert strip. The company needed a new logo and slogan. They brought in Dogbert consulting. Dogberry set his coffee cup on a sheet of copier paper and called the stain “The Brown Ring of Quality.”

  8. NEfan Says:

Well folks Bucs are stuck with the killer B’s as coaches for most likely the remainder of the season. Let’s hope the team can jump on Brady’s back like they did in 2020 and just focus and do their jobs. Browns 27 Bucs 24. BL calls a stupid play with under a minute left and takes the ball out of Brady’s hands. Drop the mic!

  9. SufferingSince76 Says:

BL hasn’t suddenly become smarter. His play calling sucks. You know it. The rest of the NFL knows it. The Bucs have to know it.

  10. Kentucky Buc Says:

Bucs run game was only good in spots in the prior two years. Let’s not act like we had some kind of dominant run game under BA.

  11. Kentucky Buc Says:

9 new players on offense this year. It was always going to take the entire season to get it together.

  12. geno711 Says:

I am not a fan of the running game or the play calling, but don’t the stats suggest that you get better efficiency running up the middle then running wide in the NFL.

Running wide leads to many more negative plays then running up the middle.

  13. Davenport Says:

Its probably too late in tbe season to fire Bowles or Leftwich. We’ll just have to ride out the next 7 weeks and hope for the best.

With the talent on this team, making the playoffs isnt good enough. Anything less than two playoff wins should force a housecleaning.

Two playoff wins will be like climbing mount everest to these clown.

  14. Panhandle Buc Says:

Leftwich is the problem and it’s not even close!

  15. Casual Observer Says:

Good title for this issue. Scheming has been poor. Maybe it is changing. Needs to.

  16. NEfan Says:

geno, it’s not the running, it’s when and BL’s predictable calls. The Ravens pointed this out. A good DC will eat mumbling BL alive.

  17. NEfan Says:

I have watched Brady for two decades and sure he relied on the big play once and awhile but more often than not he perfected his OC’s scheme and made the plays to pull out the W. BL is the opposite, Brady is constantly put in situations where the big play is the must. NOT GOOD!!!

  18. Defense Rules Says:

BL is part of the problem, but he is not the entire problem. He’s responsible for play design and playcalling. Play execution still falls on the players. This year it’s taken over half the year for this OLine to learn how to work together. Hopefully the Seattle game was the start of a big second half of the season rally. We should get some indication today in Cleveland.

  19. HC Grover Says:

There is always the lurking fear of a Bowles Blunder. The Browns get 2.5 pts for being home team.

  20. Brandon Says:

It’s not the scheme… it’s the lack of a good runner at the position. As limited at Ronald Jones was in the passing game, the offense was better with him on the field than with him on KC’s inactive list. The dude was decisive, explosive, and powerful. Fournette lacks Agility, explosiveness, and his legs stop moving on contact. Only twice in his career gas he averaged FOUR yards per carry or more. Now suddenly people want to blame everyone but him for not being able to run the ball effectively? He just isn’t that good and never was.

  21. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Touche Tim!

  22. ChiBuc Says:

Both Bruce and Byron were average at best buc coaches until Brady… drop mic

  23. NEfan Says:

Brandon, if you don’t see flaws is BL’s play calling you really don’t understand the offensive side of the ball. Ravens laughed at him, they knew ehat he was going to call before Brady did. That is NOT a good OC. As far as Rojo, he had talent but no discipline. You cannot play RB in this league if you can’t catch or pass block. Cook,Jones, Swift, Stevenson, Henry etc can all catch and block.

  24. SB~LV Says:

    Sean Payton in 2023
    MoveOn.Bucs
HC & OC are not capable on game day!

  25. Eckwood Says:

Joe I will say Brilliant!! And I will raise you ,,, friends and weak leadership always always will struggle to assess and place talent in strict positions to succeed ……….. Lenny can do it all but his running and hitting holes has become , literally awful .
When in this wet environment White or Sneak fumble or drop a key third down pass , equal blame plus must be issued to Bowles and Lefty for not getting these guys involved and game ready !!! That’s what good coaches do !!

  26. Patrickbucs Says:

Chibuc. Ariana was 2 time coach of the year before he got here. Do some research.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

None of you actually have mics…

  28. Joe Morello Says:

    “Buccos Says:

Leftwich was the OC when we won the Super Bowl. Mic drop”…….

“Mr. BUCCOS” for making such an idiotic mindless.comment. when we won the superbowl Tom was throwing 30% more than this year. Moron Leftwich has decided to take that 30% away from Brady and put it into running up the middle on first downs…You Idiot…!!….Leftwich has to go like yesterday but Bowles doesn’t have …The Balls…
to do his job. Glaser family suck as owners….

  29. ChiBuc Says:

@Patrick which is why I said “average at best buc coaches.” Do you see the word “buc?” BA didn’t whisper much into JW’s ear and he was pretty average HERE until Brady.

  30. Woodenman Says:

Yea NEfan yea I would be on another teams site too if I were a NEfan.
