“He’s Not Very Good Anymore”

November 10th, 2022

Is it over?

Joe doesn’t buy into this assessment, but the guy saying it is genuine, knowledgeable and has a huge platform.

Former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms has said the unthinkable. Well, it’s unthinkable if you wear pewter and red and live within a reasonable drive Lakeland, Largo or Longboat Key.

An NFL analyst for NBC Sports, Simms told ProFootballTalk this week that Tom Brady no longer is Tom Brady.

Say it ain’t so, Chris.

“It stinks watching them. They’re not good on offense and he’s not very good anymore. It’s average quarterback play,” Simms said of Brady. “But damn, if you leave people open or stuff like that, he’s going to hit it.”

Simms added that he believes the Bucs are a dangerous playoff team if they get in because of clutch Brady, but that doesn’t mean he’s playing good football.

Joe can’t go there. It’s too soon, there’s not enough evidence, and Brady isn’t turning the ball over. Also, Brady makes top-shelf throws every game and literally has the worst running attack of the last 50 NFL years, and he’s got banged up receivers.

So, no, Joe will not sound the alarm on Brady.

You know Simms has been trashing this team since he got his job as well as Brady.

Dude is just butthurt he couldn’t make it.

  2. Rand Says:

Chris, if you’ve noticed, has been giving the Buc’s tough love for awhile now. I think he holds a certain grudge against the franchise. Maybe I’m being over sensitive but he never has a lot of good things to say about us. I’m not expecting him to be a homer but c’mon man. Show some love once in a while.

  3. Buc4evr Says:

Simms is jealous, his career ended prematurely and he can’t deal with the fact that TB12 is still playing at 45.

Brady has definitely lost a step and has declined, but he is still a top QB and can compete. Can’t say the same about our O-line, running game or WR’s that drop 8 balls in one game.

  4. Cassius55 Says:

Simms is an ass clown that has always disliked Brady – might be some jealousy with the levels of success that the goat continues to achieve. Does he say the same about Rogers & Stanford who also have o-line issues – no that’s not on them, but yet Brady should be able to overcome that not to mention that lack of running game in Tampa (which can also be attributed to that o-line learning curve). Simms is a bozo period.

  5. Bucsfan13 Says:

Simms hates Brady. I can’t take anything he says about him seriously. He has some sort of grudge against Tom from his days in NE. His dad was more insightful. Phil is tough but fair on QB play.

  6. #99 Says:

Chris simms Are you butt hurt? Just asking for a friend!

  7. D-Rome Says:

Brady leads the league in completions, attempts, and he’s on pace to throw for 4800 yards. He currently has a 65% completion rating and only one INT. In what world is that not very good?

I will not argue that’s great but it’s certainly not bad. He currently has the 2nd lowest yards gained per attempt in his career (excluding his rookie season). He also has the lowest QBR (since 2006) in his career if you want to count that. There are many factors to these drop offs but he is still playing at a high level.

  8. Anonymous Says:

Brady is hitting more insane tight window throws than any QB in the league. By unfortunate necessity. Simms ALWAYS looks for every opportunity to dump on Brady.. and it always backfires on him. Lol

  9. Boodidley Says:

Simms is a D!CK! Never liked him always think his perspective is limited and biased on everyone but especially Brady. Funny how all these mouths don’t talk about the most drops in the league the worst running game in history the bottom tier tight end production amd the bottom 2 interior line pass block win rate. That would require critical thinking. F#ck that guy

  10. Casual Observer Says:

Junk comments by the old so-so QB.

  11. SlyPirate Says:

Chris is playing the media game. Hyperboles = click bate = viewers = money.

TB12 is a popular subject. These guys are never held accountable for their takes.

  12. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Brady not playing great and not being good anymore are not the same thing. Simms is wrong in specifics. Brady has not been special near as much as he used to be but not very many of those around him right now are special often enough either.

  13. Boodidley Says:

Oh yeah and I believe he leads the league in tight window throws…. Meaning worst receiver separation WTF

  14. BucsNoles Says:

Fact is: I’d like to see any QB with:
    A new Coach
    A Divorce
    Messed up OL
    WR’s/ DB’s/DL/OLB dropping like flies
Coaching staff that just forgot how to call plays
    Do a better job

  15. Dooley Says:

Man, some of ya’ll really, really hate hearing objective takes about Tom Brady and a lot of ya’ll line up to eat the glizzy in his defense w/no regard of how the critiques line up with reality, talk about cult of personality.

  16. HC Grover Says:

How many rings does that Clown have?

  17. Lokog Says:

Lets be real here brady at this point in his career is way better than chris simms was his entire mediocre career not even close

You know Simms has been trashing this team since he got his job as well as Brady.”

    Absolutely not true.

  19. Bojim Says:

TB needs a little help from say… the rest of the team!

  20. SPARKY Says:

The QBR is the worse rating in football. Touchdowns mean way to much. I don’t know the numbers but if a QB hands the ball off to a running back for a 1 yard td run, the QB gets no points. But if Mahomes or Rodgers do one of those little 6 inch flip to a running back instead of a hand off and the running back scores from 1yd, the QB gets like 10 points. Like I said, I don’t know the number things, but think about this. In the Super Bowl against the Rams when every body said Brady had an average game with only a 80 some QBR, if Gronk would have went one more foot after that catch in the 4th quarter and scored a touchdown, Brady’s QBR would of been in the mid to high 90s. Again I’m not good with the numbers but I hope you get the picture.

  21. MadMax Says:

Whos this guy, oh yeah, he sucked pretty bad when he played for us “yawn”….

  22. SPARKY Says:

Don’t Chris Simms look like one of those little spoiled boys who whines to mommy that the other kid gets to play more because the coaches like them more.

  23. Watzz Says:

    Watch and see! LFG Bucs!!

  24. Don’t listen to what he Says:

I think he has spleen envy

He should critique Texas where he was good. He sucked as a Buc.

  25. Watzz Says:

    Watch and see!! LFG Bucs!!

  26. '79 Defense Says:

What’s with the comments about Simms and his dislike of the Bucs? The guy loved Tampa, has said so, and has said great things about the city, his time playing for the Bucs, and how great the fans are. –Man…

  27. Buczilla Says:

Looks like whackjob florio has managed to poison Chris’s brain. Brady is understandably off due to off field concerns, but to say that he’s not good anymore is silly as hell.

  28. fern Says:

It’s ok another one that will eat his words.

  29. captivajim Says:

In his best days, or day , Simms was never as good as Brady …..

  30. Kentucky Buc Says:

This is the equivalent of Jim Cramer critiquing Warren Buffett.

  31. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Simms mom isn’t very good anymore

  32. ocala Says:

Simms is a moron….so this is not a surprising take.

  33. Beej Says:

Saying he’s not very good anymore isn’t enough, you have to tell me exactly what part of his game has regressed since his near MVP play of last season. He’s doing as much as possible with what he had to work with. Absent being a Jalen Hurts type qb, (which he could not do when he was that age) I don’t see what more Brady can do here

  34. JimmyfromNY Says:

Biggest Brady troll of them all!! Every Brady comeback takes a bite out of him!! He has predicted Brady’s demise for years. An absolute fool

  35. JimmyfromNY Says:

Dooley are u on drugs ? Chris Simms objective when it comes to Brady ? That’s hysterical. Go back the past decade and take a look to see if he is neutral when it comes to TB!! Get back to me after your homework

  36. LakelandSteve Says:

Simms hasn’t liked the Bucs since he left the franchise and his spleen didn’t go with him.

  37. Duane Says:

The beauty is we have 8 games to find out. Throwing for 4800 yards on a 6-11 team isnt going to buy Brady a pass. The only numbers that matter are wins and losses. No other fan base is going to look at Brady’s final season and lay the blame at the feet of Lefty, a bad Oline, or receivers that cant get separation. That being said, I think an old GOAT still has enough fight in him to thrive down the stretch. We will soon find out.

  38. James Says:

Tom made a throw in the ravens game into triple coverage:

it was top 30 throws of his entire career

he is extremely good at football still

  39. KingLDavid54 Says:

I think the real story is that Chris Simms injury was reported as a ruptured spleen, when in fact it was a detachment from reality!

  40. KingLDavid54 Says:

Ruptured spleen, more like detachment from reality!!!

  41. matthew veal Says:

    Just fuel.

Maybe Sims is trying to help

  42. Dewey Selmon Says:

Brady hasn’t thrown a INT in 8 games.

  43. Cobraboy Says:

    Dude is still spleenhurt…

  44. Lovie is that you? Says:

Simms is a total Brady and Bucs hater. Nothing to see from his comments. And if he’s average why are they dangerous?

  45. Dooley Says:

“Like Mussolini and Kennedy, I’m the cult of personality, the cult of personality, the cult of personality”

  46. Allen Lofton Says:

Chris Simms has always been jealous of TB and looking to be critical every chance given

  47. Allen Lofton Says:

Chris Simmes has always been jealous of TB and critical of TB to a fault

  48. Redeemer Says:

What a dope Simms is. Go look at his top 10 QB list the last 5 years. The guy has been predicting Brady’s demise for almost a decade. He’s also the guy that banked his reputation on the 9ers drafting Mac Jones. Chris might want to unbutton that collar. Either his brain is lacking critical oxygen, or he’s just plain dumb.

  49. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Uh oh! Chris Simms has crossed the Rubicon! He done messed up!

He has criticized, the 45 year old GOAT.
He can criticize other players, coaches, or Presidents. But not the anointed one.

I bet his mailbox is packed full of hate-mail already, and growing by the minute.

  50. C2asante Says:

Fact is he is still very good, but not nearly as good as he used to be. Some of it looks physical. he appears frail and afraid of being hit. Some mental, the guy is going through the toughest thing a man has to deal with. His wife decided to leave their marriage and breakup his family, and he had to endure with public scrutiny. That would weigh on anyone’s attention. Then he is scattered, one minute retire, then unretire, sign a big broadcast deal, then put it on hold, force your way on the Dolphins, then back out… His less than 100% focus has adversely affected the team that looks to him to set the standard. It’s unfair to him, as he is only human. But that is the price of being the GOAT

  51. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Absolutely, Brady is only human. Believe it, or not.

  52. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Tom Brady forgot more about football than Chris Simms will ever know.

  53. George Says:

Brady is playing incredible given the lack of of offensive line protection he receives .

  54. RustyRhinos Says:

P.O. to those fans above who are dissing on Chris Simms.
Simms earned his Lifer Buccaneer cred when he came back into the game for this team after his spleen injury. Simms nearly brought us back to a victory in that game. He never was the same after that. Which is to bad. He did get to coach Brady with the Patriots. So he has seen up close more of Brady than almost all of us have. His “opinion” of Brady carries more water than any of those above’s corianders.

    Go Bucs!!

  55. directdriver Says:

Chris Simms always has a negative thing towards Brady BEFORE he joined NBC. Just watch or listen to his podcast or show in his Bleacher Report days. Maybe something happened in his NE days or he’s being protective of Aaron Rodgers whom he considers the GOAT. He overvalues athletic talent like arm strength and circus throws instead of playing the quarterback position in the Olympian ideal a la Brady. He has become a Brady hater with objective pretense.

  56. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Chris’s Simms critique of Tom Brady, is like pee wee Herman critiquing JOE for gawds sakes. Say it ain’t so Joe!

  57. Ed Says:

Brady is playing in a high school offense without any younger receivers that can run and get open quickly. Its a shame the Bucs coaching is so lousy that they can’t develop talent. The athleticism of the current Buc wr’s isn’t explosive.

Brady needs the speed that Devin Thompkins or Kaylon Geiger from the practice squad have. Gage and Julio Jones need to go on IR and Perriman should be cut.

These coaches suck. When Brate was healthy he looked slow and it was evident Otton was a much better target. Yet they kept putting Brate out there and he got hurt because he can’t run away from a defender and gets crushed.

Jones and Gage are damaged goods yet they kept them on the field. A decent coach would get more out of a healthy young body than have to reply on unrelaible old guys like Julio and Brate.

Brady needs someone not names Scotty Miller to stretch the field.

  58. D-Rok Says:

Brady is still super-elite with 40 seconds to go, down 1 score.

Exhibit 55, at age 45. When was that? Just a few days ago, you say?

I’d roll with Brady to a rumble anytime.

  59. D-Rok Says:

As long as it involves throwing a football, LOL.

  60. Miller5252 Says:

It’s too bad that Simms had to go down this road. He’s been doing it for years with his backhanded remarks of Brady. It really makes him look jealous of Brady. I like listening to Simms, but every time he talks about Brady he comes off as a hater and jealous. Too bad really. Yeah Brady isn’t having a good year, but start comparing and see how many QB’s in the league now would be taken over Brady. 2-3 maybe??

  61. Old School Bucs Says:

Simms, stfu with your weak simplistic never been there never done it amature analysis!!!!!!

  62. 1#bucsfan Says:

Simms is dead wrong. Brady has made some crazy right throws that simms could never make even in simms prime. Go to bed simms

  63. PassingThru Says:

Sims has a long, long history at denigrating Brady. I was never sure if it was some form of jealousy, or if it was part of his shtick.

  64. Goatfarmer Says:

Another pass batted down from Chrissie Simms. He can just blow me a kiss as he remembers how Jon Gruden evaluated him, on the basis of his batted passes combined with his inability to comprehend his offense.

  65. Bucsfan13 Says:

There’s valid critique of Brady, and then there’s just known haters who always look at confirmation bias to make their point. Shannon Sharpe has got to be the biggest hater in sports. All rational thought escapes him when discussing Brady. The problem is there’s rarely any nuance in discussing Brady. It’s usually all good or all bad. Nothing is ever black and white. Also, I’m always skeptical of former players analysis. They always seem to have grudges from their playing days. That said, I wish the analysts continue ripping Brady. It only fuels him to prove his haters wrong.

Brady keeps receipts. Brady is old and he asked and should just retire. This team is done. The fans hate you. They never wanted you in the first. They actively root against you because they wanted Winston. You also have Trask fanboys who want you benched.

  66. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Losing your spleen can cause dumb takes.

  67. SOEbuc Says:

    He’s lying??????????

Don’t lie to yourself. I cringe every 3 and out and have grind my teeth away.

  68. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    MadMax Says
“Whos this guy, oh yeah, he sucked pretty bad when he played for us “yawn”

Actually, the way I remember it is that he was ‘decent’ until the spleen thing.

The team, as you may recall, had an OL that was among the worst in the league at the time. He was hit constantly and the Ol was so bad they kept letting guys get close enough to deflect passes.

After the injury, he just plain sucked.

  69. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think the whole divorce thing got in Brady’s head this year.

  70. Your Mom Says:

” It’s average quarterback play” … “and if there’s one thing I know, it’s average quarterback play!”
