Devin White: I Need “15 Tackles” In Cleveland

November 24th, 2022

Bucs ILB Devin White.

Joe is actually concerned about the Browns. Yeah, the Browns.

Between the dark Friday afternoon in January 2009 until Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians showed up at One Buc Palace in January 2019, two teams dominated the NFL when it came to losing at home: the Browns and the Bucs.

About the time the Bucs turned things around, so too it seemed did the Browns. But it was a tease. The Browns quickly went back to being the Browns.

Why is Joe concerned? Well, the Browns play in the physical AFC North. Teams have to be tough in that division or they get wiped out.

Despite the Browns having a 3-7 record, they have a tough team with a hard-nosed running attack. And one of if not the best pass-rusher in the game, Myles Garrett.

Yes, the Browns’ record is sad but they have players. Running backs Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb can hammer a defense.

Cleveland is sixth in the NFL in team rushing and fifth in rushing yards per game.

Cleveland’s ability to run is the first thing that jumped out to Bucs linebacker Devin White when he first saw their tape.

“When I looked at the [Browns-Bills] game, I said, ’Fifteen tackles,” White said yesterday at One Buc Palace. “Getting off the bus, this is a game for 15 tackles. Come down here and be ready to make plays.’

“I was just telling Antoine [Winfield], I look at these games and I get excited because it’s a chance to make a name for yourself against other great players that have established great names for themselves.

“We’ve just got to be dialed in. One of the things we’ve been doing a lot is going over our run fits and being gap-sound – everybody having integrity on the defense of where they’re supposed to be. I think that’s what we were missing a lot – people being a lot of miss-fits. Now, we’re getting everything under control.”

Both Todd Bowles and various Bucs defenders echoed what White said about how the Bucs defense played at Munich against the Seahawks; they played fundamentally sound and that led to suffocating running back Kenneth Walker.

That game was a nice tuneup for Sunday. The Browns basically have two guys like Walker to tote the rock.

Sunday should be a nice test to see if the Bucs really have turned the corner or if stomping the Seahawks was just a fluke.

Miss-fits is a pretty apt nickname for this defense the first half of the year. Let’s see if the second half is a bit better.

  2. LONG JOHN Says:

HE STILL TALKS TO MUCH !

  3. Goatfarmer Says:

    Hey Todd.

This far into the season, most would expect that a defensive guru’s players would know their run fits and be held accountable for executing them properly. Same in the secondary, knowing and not blowing assignments.

10 games in and your alleged best player is saying your defense hasn’t known their run fits. The breakdowns and blown coverages have also shown up at the worst times.

    Hello? Anyone home?

And maybe you still wonder why the Jets fired you.

  4. Goatfarmer Says:

Diva – just do your job and hold the others to that standard. Maybe you get 3 tackles but you hold Chubb to under 60 yards and the Brownstains to under 15.

  5. garro Says:

How abot just doing your Job! And not worying about your stats!

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Concerned about the Browns too. Dangerous team … sometimes. This is kind of a typical year for them; high hopes to start with but then boom. Many call their stadium ‘The Dog-Pound’ but just as many up there call it ‘The Factory of Sadness’.

  7. Kentucky Buc Says:

This kids got some narcissistic tendencies . Just STFU and play . That kind of thinking leads to freelancing.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

All I can think of is…..if Devin White has 15 tackles….where was the rest of the defense?

We will see how good our run defense is perhaps without Vea……it wasn’t very good without Hicks…..and the subs for him are the same for Vea……Nacho & Gholston…..
    Call me concerned……

  9. Georger Says:

Grab a 2 TD lead, that way they have to abandon the run game.

  10. Hodad Says:

Joe is actually concerned about the Browns. Me too, and that goes for any other NFL team on our schedule.

  11. bucsince79 aka bumanner Says:

Need 45 in full beast mode… I think he is focused & ready to ball…

  12. Kentucky Buc Says:

A chance to make a name for yourself. I I I, me me me. Got a bad case of the Imee’s.

  13. Msr76 Says:

D.White does not sound like a TEAM player or Leader. Only worried about how HE looks.

  14. Goatfarmer Says:

Slippery Rock could give the Bucs a game. Our team is capable of playing down to and below the lowest level.

  15. Browsing from DC Says:

I’m in the minority here but I read the “I want 15 tackles” and “make a name for myself” as confidence, desire and swagger.

The second part about being “gap-sound” should be good to hear from all the D. White haters since he’s accused (sometimes rightly so) of overrunning plays or “flying around all over the place”.

I may be wrong, but I believe he leads the team in tackles, won defensive player of the month earlier and recently defensive player of the week.

The kid does talk a lot but he performs. He’s young and aggressive and confident. Every player can have a bad game or a couple of bad plays within a game. Check game stats for every game so far and you’ll see him at the top in tackles in probably every game.

If Vea can’t go on Sunday and his rotating replacements in the middle can’t stuff the run, I’m glad we have D.White behind them.

  16. Ash Says:

Like to hear can confidence in d white browns. Until I see more consistency I’m conserved with every team the bucs play hopefully they have turned a corner but there isn’t enough consistency to really say yet.

  17. MadMax Says:

Ive been telling everyone i work with and at the bars….this is the game to watch!! Both teams are fighting for their identity at just the right time. Soooo many times Ive called us Cleveland South lol…..you too Joes.

This is it boys! This is it Mr White! Time to show up and make it hurt, and show them we ARE NOT cleveland south!!!!!!!

  18. Miller5252 Says:

I hate when he starts talking cocky. He starts feeling himself too much and then has bad games. Dude needs cockiness to ball…. But needs to keep it quiet and just go shove it in their face. Needs to learn this from Brady. No need to say it when you can just hammer him! Even with him talking he’s still one of my favorites. Ride that horse young man!!

  19. Mike C Says:

“I” need 15 tackles ” it’s how you make a name for yourself” stats and making a name for YOURSELF does not win games bro.
