Would Bucs Be In The Market For A Receiver?

October 3rd, 2022

Injuries forcing Bucs’ hand?

Curious words from Bucs coach Todd Bowles this afternoon about the health of a receiver the team banked on to make one more run at a Super Bowl with Tom Brady.

Yesterday, in his first game back since injuring his knee against Dallas in the season-opener, oft-injured veteran receiver Julio Jones nicked himself up again and was limited.

Bowles was asked how much the Bucs can bank on Jones the rest of the season since it’s a struggle to get him on the field. And when he does get on the field Julio is an injury waiting to happen.

“We will see,” Bowles said. “It’s still early in the season. We want to make sure we get a healthy guy before we make that evaluation.”

Joe is going to guess that “healthy guy” means they want to see Jones healthy again before the team determines whether to go shopping.

It’s clear, aside from newcomer Cole Beasley who is just getting acclimated, that the Bucs’ backup receivers simply cannot get the job done. Jaelon Darden and Scotty Miller cannot replace Julio, no way in hell.

And with Chris Godwin also nicked up — Joe believes last night Godwin proved how invaluable he is — it almost sounded like to Joe the Bucs would be open-minded to bringing in another proven receiver.

Now is about that time.

Through four games, teams have a good idea of who will battle for a postseason appearance and those clubs already playing for the 2023 draft. So there should be veteran receivers available for rent, specifically those in a contract year.

For those wondering, the trade deadline is 4 p.m., Nov. 1.

  1. Dano Says:

Bucs basically only have Evans healthy. Scotty & Darden suck and Beasley doesn’t know playbook

  2. Darin Says:

There’s only one unbeaten team so teams don’t know who will be battling for postseason. Lots of 2-2. Every team still has hope unless their gm somehow has job security

  3. LVMYBUCS Says:

Really? Come on dude he is here for one last pay day then he will retire like Sherman did. Havent u learned anything from the Richard Sherman experiment. Jesus thats why i have no faith in Bowles

  4. Buczilla Says:

Do it Licht! Screw the future, it’s all or nothing right now.

  5. zzbuc Says:

    @ Joe.

Somebody to replace Darden, Miller AND Julio Jones.

I am sorry to say but, we can’t trust Julio Jones health…..Would love to have him 100% , but, is not happening…. That guy is mad by Porcelain….

  6. Anon Says:

Incoming stupid takes in comments sections. I swear JBF is the cesspool of Bucs fandom.

  7. LVMYBUCS Says:

Ask Jones for a refund. I rather have a hungry rookie WR then this peace of glass.

  8. DBS Says:

Enough of Jones. he can’t stay on the field. Now the question is who could we get?

  9. Beeej Says:

    Does anyone know OBJ’s status?

  10. DBS Says:

OBJ is just another injury waiting to happen.

  11. zzbuc Says:

    @Beeej..

I would look somewhere else, we replace an injury prone like Jones with another injury prone with OBJ……Doesn’t make any sense, at least for me….

  12. Joe Says:

Every team still has hope unless their gm somehow has job security

    Statistically, this is inaccurate.

  13. Eric Says:

Tyler Johnson for a 7th round pick, he hasn’t been activated at all this season and knows the Bucs system.

  14. Panhandle Buc Says:

I heard Julio was injury prone, but this guy can’t play one single game w/o getting hurt! OBJ sounds better and better by the week and I really can’t stand him…

  15. Joe Says:

Really? Come on dude he is here for one last pay day then he will retire like Sherman did.

Richard Sherman was on the streets unemployed. As Joe has written countless times, dudes who are on the street in October are unemployed for a reason.

So what you are saying is, you would rather ride with Scotty Miller and/or Jaelon Darden to save the Bucs’ playoff hopes over — you pick a name — a proven receiver from the Raiders or the Steelers or the 49ers?

Betcha Tom Brady doesn’t feel that way.

  16. SB~LV Says:

    lol!
    WR is not the problem
The team doesn’t have it’s head screwed on right.
Something is amiss and it’s not talent.
3 flat games and a win
They are Not playing as a team.. just one play after another from the game plan

  17. Nate Says:

I think DeShawn Jackson is out there lol

  18. HC Grover Says:

It is Godwin the 20 million Blunder.

  19. Yucs2Bucs Says:

How about liking for a leader to sign for the D @joe ? What I’ve seen from Vea and maybe I heard it wrong, but D White was player of the month. He’s to inconsistent in my opinion and watching the lack of effort from the line and LBs is extremely alarming. I never believed in the hype of this being the best Bucs team, but as a Die Hard I would have thought after last years loss to the Rams this team would have come out angry and ready. They play and look like the coach ( did you see when they were down 14 ) and Bowles is smiling ? Anyways the Dirty Birds come in with a good running game and I hope they aren’t taking them lightly.

  20. Jack Sparrow Says:

Kelce was a monster last night. We know he will be getting a lot of the balls but defense kind of ignored him. If u cover Kelce, a rookie WR or an unknown TE will step up. How come Bucs cannot scheme that kind of plays for our guys to get open.

  21. LVMYBUCS Says:

Seriously Joe aren’t you the Jamis Wiston lover/follower who tried to tell us he was the Bucs savior? Sorry if I take your comment with a grain of salt. What’s the point of having Jones if he is a one trick pony? Go look on a practice squad or something maybe you find a diamond in the ruff.

  22. Joe Says:

Go look on a practice squad or something maybe you find a diamond in the ruff.

Joe will take the odds of trading for a proven guy with a bad team over a Hail Mary with a guy not good enough to be on a team’s 53-man roster. Most teams serious about winning would as well.

  23. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs really need Gronk Desperately. I get this feeling that because our receiving corp started out with injuries, Its gonna be this way all season long. And our 2nd tier of receivers are just that..2nd Tier. I am also geting the feeling we will not get that ring this year. A playoff berth maybe. The KC O and D lines look far superior to ours. It was like a HS team playing a well-established college team. Not feeling that Superbowl thing for us at all.

  24. LVMYBUCS Says:

Who is a better player DeShawn Jackson or Jones who would you wrather have Joe? Why did I ask you that, you will probably say Jamis Winston. ; )

  25. Kentucky Buc Says:

    Lance Alworth is available.

  26. Beeej Says:

Kenny Golloday(?) would have been available until Sheperd got hurt

  27. Jack Sparrow Says:

    AB is available :-)))

  28. SB~LV Says:

Bucs don’t need Loveable Lumbering Gronk !
They need to stop feeling sorry for this and that and focus on winning each play at every position!
It ain’t the talent, it’s the attitude in the lockeroom and execution on and off the field!

  29. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If Beasley is activated from the PS again, he will take a roster spot……that may mean Scotty would be placed on the PS.
We need to let Gage, Perriman & Julio heal……
We can work with one of those 3…..Evans, Godwin & Beasley.

I still would like to see Thompkins activated……the eyes don’t lie….he caught everything thrown his way in training camp & preseason.

  30. DoooshLaRue Says:

The Gronk-Brady reunion that so many yearn for is basically an affirmation that we aren’t a very good football team.
So if Gronk were to come back and all of a sudden we start kicking ass then what does that say about the rest of the team?

To me it says overall we suck.

If we can’t win with all the talent we are already paying for then we have some very big problems.

  31. Francisco Guzman Says:

Didn’t know the offense gave up over 40 points. How about someone that can cover wideouts?

  32. Byedon Leftbi*ch Says:

Season over boys. The Bucs tried to get all cute and totally blew it.

From playing calling to the receiving core, we’re a joke.

It’s a patch work from here on out. Bring in a bunch of washed up guys hoping they can still play, only to be let down.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

Miller is fine as a #6 or #7 WR, the issue is when he’s your #2 or #3 WR.

I mean it would be nice to have 6 WR’s who are all starters, but I don’t think the Bucs have cap space for that.

  34. PassingThru Says:

Prior to garbage time last night, these were the numbers of the vaunted WR free agents:

    Gage: 10 yards
    Julio: 7 yards

I’m sure both a nicked, but both have been a disappointment so far.

  35. dmatt Says:

    Tampabaybucfan,
I totally agree with u. We need to give Deven Thompkins an opportunity to show his skills. He was consistent and caught everything during training camp. I said before, he’s hungry, n a diamond in the rough. He’s smaller than Darden n Miller but what separates him from the two is he’s fearless, has reliable hands, n high or low, he catches everything thrown his way.

  36. PassingThru Says:

The Bucs desperately need red zone threats. They have one outstanding red zone receiver in Evans, but after that the pantry is bare. No AB. No Gronk. Godwin isn’t Godwin, and probably won’t be for at least a couple of months.

  37. EEK Says:

    short answer: yes

  38. jason Says:

not a bucks fan but how about Emmanuel Sanders!?

  39. Bunny Says:

Bucs can right the ship, they have good players however they are still figuring things out, with injuries also I won’t give up on the BUCS, they need to get after Mahomes more be a thorn in his side let him run as if running away from a lion is how you contain him and hit him hard!

  40. Daryl Green Says:

I asked for Emmanuel Sanders before Julio.

  41. David Says:

See how the next couple of weeks play out with Julio period

BRATE- He has dropped more this year than I’ve ever seen him drop in his career (and he can’t block).

I understand if the rookies aren’t ready for a full time but what’s going on with Kyle Rudolph?

  42. firethecannons Says:

we need to develop Otton and Kieft

  43. firethecannons Says:

next sunday against the Falcons and Steelers and Panthers–good time to force feed those two the ball

  44. Killian Says:

OBJ is just sitting around. He’s been linked to LA and Buffalo, but those are some large tax burdens. Or you know…call Gronk.

  45. WvBuc Says:

If Jason is a magician, let’s see him pull Brandin Cooks out of his hat.

  46. Goatfarmer Says:

Grayson was a producer and a performer. Bring him back. Humphries is a free agent. Give him a look. Get Mrs Beasley in a treadmill, fast.

But don’t waste capital on another receiver. DL? Yes. OL? Yes. Both.

Don’t think about trading for a WR.

    Thanks for cutting TJ, Todd.

  47. Kody Says:

CADE, KO, BEASELY and R. WHITE –

ALL can be very effective receivers. ALL 4 Should be drilling with Brady all week long (including Wednesday-sorry, Tom). Get these guys synced up with Brady and make them serious receiver threats and we’ll become much more of a quandary and threat to opposing Ds. R. White had like 5 receptions last night and Ko had a stunning catch near the end zone! These 4 guys are our answer. Not some guy off the street.

  48. Wayne Cooper Says:

So here is the problem with my Bucs!

    1. Tom Brady is NOT Focused due to the personal issues in his marriage.
    2. The team started getting injury prone even in training camp….which is odd.
    3. The offensive line is NOT blocking well for the running game.
    4. Right now, the defense is a little overrated and needs work.
    5. The Receiving Corps needs to heal and start dominating on the darn field!

  49. IE Buc Says:

It’s obvious they made a mistake getting rid of Tyler Johnson and keeping Miller and Darden. Time to move on from them.

Give Geiger and Thompkins a shot.

Otton needs to be our 1 TE.

  50. captivajim Says:

Jones is finished.. I’d swap miller out & bring Grayson in. I would line up OBJ before he gets picked up by Rams again . His surgery was 6 or 7 wks after Godwin’s –so he should be able to play in Dec-maybe mid nov.

  51. Mike arrington k Says:

    Kieft lo
oked like gonk Sunday night need to work him more he is tall big can catch good whats the problem with giving him more reps?

  52. Bobby M. Says:

Godwin was a reach from a contract perspective, he’s handicapped the team for a few years now with his injuries. He’s not worth $20 million in cap space for 14 games and then a 50/50 chance he’s healthy for the playoffs. We have $45 million in 4-5 WRs that can’t stay on the field for two games in a row….and it’s only week 5. Super doubtful Godwin or Jones finish the season, that leaves us with Evans, gage, and Beasley….better than Miller and Darden but nothing spectacular.

  53. Anthony Says:

I’m sorry playing Brady after he jacked the arm was stupid. I don’t care if he said I’m good I would have sat him played Gabbert and called it a day. But like so many other times with these coaches the player says ya I’m good and bam hurt worse out for longer. Case in point Gronk for last year. And anyone from this year. I think your going to find out Brady has an arm issue that’s going to affect him all year. I hope not but didn’t look good and still we had him throw 52 times much for taking care of our players. Wow. And I also don’t care how much Brady says I’m good. Bottom line sit your ass down and we are going to error on the side of caution. If he can’t play or play at 100% then what.

  54. Anthony Says:

Hey Joe Miller and Darden made the 53 man so now what. Maybe just maybe they should have kept the speedster from last year who qas bigger stronger and faster with better hands then both of them sorry his name escapes me but he wore 15.? Why not try Thompkins and as far as Gronk goes . Love him but stop crying over spilled milk.

  55. BillyBucco Says:

I agree with letting Ko Kieft get involved like they said he would.
Look at how SF wore out LA with their FB monster.
    Dude has hands.
A shame Rachaad fumbled because he still had an awesome game.
That flate was a thing of beauty because the hip turn is natural.
He gets up field in a hurry and we need to RUN him more.
    Give Lenny a break.
He would be MORE valuable in the 2nd half with a run downhill one cut style.
Defense is wore out in the 4th and we should dominate.

If you wanna trade, get Marlon Humphrey or Derwin James or Calais Campbell.
It’s our defense that needs Logan Ryan back or some more studs.

  56. OhioBucsFan419 Says:

Andy Isabella just got cut by the Cardinals. Former 2nd round pick in 2019, dudes got some wheels on him, I’m pretty sure he’s a fairly decent return man as well. If he clears waivers he could be worth a look. I could definitely see he and Brady potentially having a solid connection, and no, not because Isabella is a white boy.

  57. jgar Says:

Tyler Johnson is with the Texans and hasn’t seen the field. Devin Thompkins is Buc Fifty Five.
Brady doesn’t trust the offensive line and checks down too much. I don’t blame him. He is 45 years old and still playing at a high level and wants to stay that way.
But if you have Chris Godwin, Julio Jones, and Russell Gage and you are throwing to TEs that is a problem. Take Mike Evans out of the equation and the Bucs get trounced on by the Chiefs. Mike Evans has to be the best WR in the NFL. But what WRs that are available would be better than Chris Godwin, Julio Jones, and Russell Gage?

  58. jgar Says:

Also, no one has said anything about Darden’s hands before. I don’t see how you could say Tyler Johnson has better hands than him if we haven’t seen him drop any balls yet. I seem to recall Tyler Johnson dropping some easy balls.

  59. ArkansasBuc Says:

    ADAM HUMPHRIES!!!!
