Good Hands Chris Godwin

October 13th, 2022

Chains-mover.

So here is a reason why Tom Brady loves to throw to Chris Godwin.

Simply put, Godwin catches the ball.

NextGen Stats has a stat called “Catch Percentage.” Yeah, it is what you think it is. Who catches the highest percentage of targeted passes.

Currently, Godwin is No. 5 in the NFL. His catch percentage is 84.21 percent. Simply put, if Brady throws his way, there’s a very good chance of moving the chains.

Further, Godwin is doing this with tighter coverage. Of the top five players in catch percentage, Godwin’s average yards of separation is 3.5 yards. Among the top five, only Devin Duvernay of the Crows has a tighter window with 3.1 yards average separation.

As far as catching passes in tight windows, few are better than Mike Evans, per NextGen stats. Evans is tied with five other receivers for having the fifth-tightest window averaging 2.2 yards of separation per catch.

Yes, Brady loves him some Chris Godwin. Sure hands of Godwin is the reason. But let’s not forget that Godwin gave up his #12 jersey to Brady and requested nothing in return. That’s one great way to start a relationship!

  2. Goatfarmer Says:

Godwin has God in his name and on his side. He and Mike are the best tandem in the league. When they are both healthy and playing, the team wins even despite pillow softness in the trenches.

  3. SB~LV Says:

Not only is he a great WR , he is a tough tough football player!

  4. Dooley Says:

16 catches on 19 targets for a catch% 90 in 2022 so far, and if I’m remembering correctly last season 77 of his 98 receptions in 14 games came on 1st & 2nd down in 2021. 41 of those 77 receptions went for 1st downs, CG is important to the entire offense because of his ability to catch passes that move the chains and keep drives alive. Also, of any WR in all the NFL the dude delivers a very disrespectful stiff-arm.

  5. SPARKY Says:

Sounds to me like Evans and Godwin need to get a little more open.

  6. Bucsfan13 Says:

Our offense stalled in the second half when the coaches benched Godwin. It was such a baffling decision.

  7. Redeemer Says:

He’s a great reciever. Just wish they would’ve IRd him to start the season. Who ever made that decision, it was incredibly short sighted.

  8. BucsfanFred Says:

We have several useless china dolls that need to be on IR.
    Godwin seems like he’s ok.
Hicks and Julio are just plain worthless.

  9. Redeemer Says:

The IR rules have changed this year. Teams are allowed 8 designations. I think it’s a money issue. Teams have to pay them regardless. I expected teams to use it much more frequently. Wrong again

  10. Pete Says:

CG is a complete football player. He excels at everything he does on the field.

  11. unbelievable Says:

Have loved this kid since the night he was drafted.

Hope him and Evans get to retire as Bucs.

You can tell he’s still not 100%, so I’m okay with them still limiting his snaps a bit until he’s in full football shape.

  12. Show Me the TDs Says:

Mike Evan gets his 2.2 yards separation just by leaping up with those long arms!

  13. D-Rok Says:

Evans and Godwin: 2 of the most classy football players, on and off the field. Both excellent WR’s. I am so grateful we have this tandem on our Bucs team.
