Devin White Says Fourth-Quarter Football Can Get “Boring”

October 10th, 2022

Hey, Joe gets that Falcons football can get boring, especially when Cordarrelle Patterson and Kyle Pitts are out injured as they were yesterday.

The Bucs were leading by 21 points entering the fourth quarter. Joe was eager to wrap the damn game up and grab a Bromosa and a couple of gems from Burger Monger. But Joe wasn’t on the field earning hundreds of thousands of dollars to play a game for 60 minutes.

Buccaneers savior linebacker Devin White was on the field.

TheAthletic.com documented that after the game, White explained the Bucs defense coughing up some of its lead was, in part, because they had collectively lost interest.

“When you’re beating a team, kind of imposing your will on them, it can get boring, and you can get less aggressive,” linebacker Devin White said of surrendering two touchdowns late. “We’re just trying to stay aggressive.”

Joe can imagine Buccaneers legend Derrick Brooks, a White mentor, reading this quote and thinking, ‘I taught this young man to fight for every blade of grass. And he’s bored in the fourth quarter?’

Yeah, it was an odd thing to say from a professional athlete. It’s not like the Bucs were leading 38-0.

Joe will assume (hope?) White was speaking for himself and not the teammates around him.

He is the Jameis of the defense , what a clown!

  2. gbobucsfan Says:

    Wow. What a silly comment.

  3. A Bucs Fan Says:

Yeah, that was a really bad look for White. He’s spoiled, and his tackling has gotten worse every year. The cherry on top here is he tried to tell the reporters that they were just trying to get a headline when they quoted his entire answer! Definitely put his foot in his mouth with that one.

  4. #8 Says:

He just inserted Hicks’ foot in his mouth.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think he’s probably right on the money…..but shouldn’t say it out loud….

This is a product of poor coaching……I’ve been trying to figure out exactly what is wrong with the Bucs this year……and I think it’s the absence of BA…..

Byron & Todd have not inspired a team to play 4 full quarters of football….yet.

  6. Kentucky Buc Says:

Some guys just need to shut up. Asinine

  7. Parrishbucsfan Says:

    Suh

  8. Statisticly Insignificant Reader Says:

I can’t believe Wiff White would say that. How about the challenge of keeping an opponent scoreless.

  9. Redeemer Says:

TBBF, I’m forced to agree. While I didn’t think BA was much of a coach, this team has taken on Bowles personality. The idea that Arians was this total players coach, isn’t entirely accurate. He wasn’t afraid to chew guys out, and put them in their place. For all the talk about how better prepared they’d be under Bowles, I haven’t seen it. He talks a good game. Situational/complementary football and what not. In my book, Bowles has been out coached in almost every game. The talent gap is the only reason this team is 3-2.

  10. Hodad Says:

You don’t give a big contract to a player who gets bored in the 4th quarter. As a capt., and MLB of the D, you should be ashammed giving up the running yards you’re giving up. White’s missed gaps, and contain on Mariota where he ran one way, and Mariota got a big gain running the other way. Devin needs to watch some Ray Lewis tape. He never, ever got, or looked bored during a game. Check out some Mike Singletary tape too. Bored? Should be embarrassed saying that.

  11. skomsky Says:

I just hear the audio 3x and that is not the whole statement. you and everyone else is missing the meaning of what he said by taking a piece of the statement.

He needs to be careful how he says things but people are interpreting what he said in the wrong way because they haven’t truly listened to what he said.

  12. Kentucky Buc Says:

Do you really think this kids taking anything Brooks says to heart. Go talk to a kid that age. Give them some advice. Let us know how that works out for you.

  13. Bowles4President Says:

Was Atlanta bored in the Super Bowl?

  14. B.D Says:

    Reminds me of Kwon Alexander

  15. ElioT Says:

What a dumb mentality and even dumber to say publicly.

Where’s Lavonte at with this crap?

Time to get Suh – this Defense needs a grown man in the huddle and locker room.

  16. ElioT Says:

Lavonte let McCoy (of all people) to take the “leader” role for years, so you know he isn’t going to step up.

  17. teacherman777 Says:

Jason Pierre-Paul turned back the clock and showed Sunday night why he could be the answer for the team’s depth issues at outside linebacker.

Throughout much of the Ravens’ 19-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the 33-year-old displayed the same game-changing traits that made him a three-time Pro Bowl selection and one of the most fearsome pass rushers in the league.

    JPP played great yesterday.

  18. D-Rome Says:

I texted a friend of mine during the game and rhetorically asked, “What the heck is going on here?” She says the defense sleeps in the second half. That’s typical fan speak but it’s really unusual to hear a player pretty much admit that.

This is as bad as Lavonte David’s comment of the first play during that “Tennessee-ready” game.

  19. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

After Joes rants about White tackling high it was impossible to not notice yesterday that his tackles look like shoulder pad hugs.

  20. WM Says:

For White to say that it says so much about him I guess he’s got his ring now he wants that big time contract and like most guys that get those big contracts never live up to them Pathetic The game ain’t over until the clock is all zero’s LAZY ASS

  21. captivajim Says:

We should trade him to a less boring team ASAP .. He’s a mouth.. who knows there could be someone out there who could help the run defense .

    White is a clown

  22. Joey Strom Says:

    Completely agree with Tampabaybucfan.
I understand there have been plenty of injuries this year, but the coaching has been uninspiring, and thus, we have an uninspired team which through 5 weeks has not been able to put together a full 4 quarter game yet. They either start out games slowly, or finish as they did yesterday – flat and undisciplined. The defense should have shut out the Falcons, who were without Pitts and Patterson, but just as White admitted to the media after the game, they got “bored” and let up. Not a good look and not the killer instinct we’ve been expecting out of this team. Very disappointing to hear him admit that, and it falls back on the coaches. We clearly miss B.A.

  23. Lakeland Steve Says:

What a lot of us would have given to have the talent to play football on that level. Any player who was bored should be sent packing cause that kind of crap is dangerous. This is the supposed leader of the defense?

  24. HurricaneMC Says:

I think what he was trying to say was, it’s easy to get complacent. This defense should be trying for shutouts every game, it won’t happen, but that should be the goal of every player on that side of the ball. This team has a lot to prove, some of the guys on this team still think they are the reigning SB Champs, and it shows. A win is a win, and I just hope the coaches can fix this sort of mentality in the locker room. GO BUCS!

  25. Panhandle Buc Says:

Damn, I would have definitely kept that one to myself! Not a good look Get Live

  26. Winny Testaverde Says:

Keep overrunning plays and tackling at shoulder pad level…that’ll get you the $100 million contract you so richly deserve/request. Last 2 seasons have shown regression.

  27. Panhandle Buc Says:

Where’s the leadership on the defensive side of the ball?? I think that’s the problem with our 2022 Bucs D!

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m quite sure DW45 chose the wrong word…”boring” for “complacent”……..or took the foot off the throat…..
He doesn’t have much of a command of the language…

Nevertheless….he needs to get his a$$ chewed out for saying that……and it needs to be a public a$$chewing.

  29. Pewter Power Says:

What a stupid idiotic thing to say. He should stay away from the podium from now on because that does not sound like a guy you should give a big money deal. That mentality almost lost us the game and considering how you got blew out the week before it was just stupid

  30. ClwJB Says:

He did t have to say it, we could see it on the field….

  31. BucsfanFred Says:

I agree with captivajim; we should trade white to a team like the bears who’ll have a high pick. Draft a real player in the spring.

  32. Redeemer Says:

What did Bowles say about White? Something to the effect of, he needs to play within the defense, and let the game come to him. I still see the same freelancing. He relies too much on his athleticism.

  33. kyle Says:

dwhite never impressed my with his interviews.. he always sounds like he graduated from the “who gives a F” high school for sports…

  34. Carl L Says:

Yes, he’s talking trash like he’s playing. He’s playing the first quarter like he’s talking trash about the 4th quarter. Every year, it’s more and more trash talk and less performance from White? What’s up with him?

  35. Listnfrmafar Says:

The only comment I can come up with is, ARE YOU SERIOUS??? Please learn to tackle then maybe we’ll listen.

  36. firethecannons Says:

he is not the sharpest tool in the shed as evidenced by this statement, why say this to the media?

  37. unbelievable Says:

I guess they were bored before the Chiefs game even started…

    :: rimshot ::

Now learn to properly tackle, and until then, please STFU. So sick of hearing White run his mouth.

  38. Goatfarmer Says:

Bowles needs to take Diva into the woodshed. Maybe don’t start him against the Steelers. See how boring he thinks it is on the bench. Dumbarse prima Donna overhyped biotch.

  39. David Says:

I understand what he is saying, some people are going to go ballistic over that comment but I get it. At the same time, Bowles and David and VEA (who is a captain now!) and Shaq Barrett etc. need to pull him aside and explain their goal is to be the best defense. Their goal is to get a shut out. Their goal is to be dominant. Not really good and then let up.
That mentality while easing up with more zone by the coach late in the game is what allowed ATL back in. (along with the offense suddenly looking like the first day of training camp)

  40. Goatfarmer Says:

    Can’t make it up.

  41. Biff Barker Says:

White has always been an XL sized hat with a half dozen cattle.
His play is inconsistent but he consitently says dumb azz things.

  42. Biff Barker Says:

All the posters who said the woodshed is the first stop win a cookie!

  43. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

unbelievable Says: Dude yes. 100%. DW is a terrible tackler. He should take some lessons from DB55 and AWJr. And agree he needs to STFU and work on getting better. Most overrated player on the Bucs.

  44. Listnfrmafar Says:

David, what you’re missing is this is how players get hurt. Some of these guys are still living on their SB high. Time to stop living off yesterday’s successes.

  45. Brandon Says:

Any of you geniuses know what the team’s record was after five games in 2020? 3-2. STFU… and that team was far healthier and had better weapons on offense and the 2022 team has played a tougher schedule. In 2020 we played three terrible AFC West teams and beat all of them, lost to the Saints and the Beats and Nick Foles. It’s crazy how people love to open their mouth and share how ridiculous they are.

  46. donuts Says:

Sadly, this is the attitude of the modern athlete. Most of these NFL guys have been infected since high school. Its the ME syndrome. There is no concept of team greatness its all about ME on Sunday. Frankly, this Bucs D is above average…they are nowhere near greatness of the Brooks / Sapp regime.

  47. Simeon97 Says:

Joe-have you had a chance to explain your post with 13:40 left in the game discussing the “win” and the division lead? Were you bored reporting?

  48. orlbucfan Says:

Geniuses on here? More like DW bloviators. Now, that’s an interesting fact that the SB year, Bucs started out 3-2. I can guarantee if you go look up JBF columns and comments from then, you’ll see the same stupidity. Hope LVD has a little chat along with WillG with Doofus White.

  49. Goatfarmer Says:

Bench him for a half. He’s shown to play better with time off.

  50. Darin Says:

The self proclaimed best ever said what?!?!?! Grow up 45

  51. Coburn Says:

I can’t even imagine ever feeling bored playing football. Seems insane. Heart always beating fast and you want to pile it on during a blowout. Is this really what happens when youve been paying it most of your life? Kinds sad to think.. certainly didn’t get that feel from some of the legends that played the game. Always seemed to love it right up until retirement

  52. Listnfrmafar Says:

Oralbuc, that is correct with the SAME SB WINNER QB! Now isn’t that a hoot??

  53. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There many synonyms of the word bored……..

The one I like best is blase…… perhaps mundane……but can you see DW45 using those.

  54. Arians_red_pen Says:

This team has nowhere near the heart of the Superbowl team 😔

  55. ModHairKen Says:

I guess you must have been real bored during the NFC Championship game and the KC game, you LSU loser.

  56. gotbbucs Says:

Devin White seems to have a little Gerald McCoy in his mental make up.

Talks like he’s the 2nd coming of Christ and then lays eggs on the field and puts foot in the mouth afterwards.

He plays way too high. Shouldered tacklers miss lots of tackles and playing that high means he can’t get off blocks. All that speed is useless if you can’t finish the play.

  57. Tbbucs3 Says:

Devin White please put an end to that Gerald McSoftie mentality…..

Arians and Brady changed this team culture back in 2020 but between Lovie Smith 2.0 and a distracted Tom Brady, the culture and leadership on this incredibly talented team just isn’t the same

  58. Tbbucs3 Says:

Comments like this wouldn’t fly under Arians

  59. Faspro Says:

This is why the bucs are mediocre; Bad leadership…
Can you imagine this dude making that comment under any good coach?

  60. C2 asante Says:

I bet not one of the people calling Devin White stupid actually heard his comment and realize reading an excerpt of it here completely lacks the context and manner in which he said it. Perhaps the real dummy is one who has zero to half information and runs with false assumptions as if they actually know what they are talking about.

  61. '79 Defense Says:

I forgive him. He’s very entertaining in his interviews. –I do think though that he went too far with his comments on Jameis after the Saints game. You don’t need to do that. Godwin was right to say something to him.

  62. ModHairKen Says:

    Gotbbucs, spot on.

  63. Bucamania Says:

These guys probably asked if they can work from home during the week.

  64. garro Says:

?!? Boring! !!! A teammate needs to pull this asshat off to the side and get his head right! Not Brooks not Bowles …A teammate!
