“Tom Don’t Give No Speeches”

September 16th, 2022

“Shut up and work every damn second, Blaine.”

Legendary Bucs linebacker Lavonte David explained one of the many differences between Tom Brady and Jameis Winston.

David sat down for the Truss Levelz podcast and, of course, eventually was asked about Brady and what sets him apart. The question came after David noted a few times that Brady completely changed the Bucs organization and taught the roster how to prepare for games.

David said it’s all about Brady’s work rate, how serious he is at all times about football and that he doesn’t want special treatment and isn’t into the rah-rah stuff.

“Tom don’t give no speeches,” David said. “He’s the definition of leading by example.”

Brady is competitive from start of practice and it never lets up, David explained. He quoted Brady, saying “If we’re competing, we’re going to compete.”

That was a change, David said, noting that Jameis would talk and be ultra-competitive in practice and “and then chill out for a while,” whereas Brady never stops competing.

Of course, Bucs fans know Brady gave a famous speech to the roster about football legacy just before the Super Bowl kickoff. Joe can imagine how Brady commanded the room on that day. Joe also can imagine the wild speech Jameis has prepared for his Saints on Sunday.

“eating the w”…. haha, one of the best “speeches” ever.

  2. SufferingSince76 Says:

Brady’s never had to say “Im ballin’. Check yo sheets”.

  3. BigPoppaBuc Says:

The Brady years have me questioning my own sanity because of how hopeful I was for Jameis here. I bought the Winston speeches and confidence and welcomed his gunslinger style. Brady has shown me the light and probably ruined me to at least 90% of the QBs that may follow him.

  4. SlyPirate Says:

The Jameis years seem so long ago now.

They were metaphorically Licht’s awkward teen period.

  5. A Says:

Remember getting to the 10yr line and hoping for a field goal.

  6. '79 Defense Says:

Say what you will about Jameis, but in pro football, as in life, there are very few great leaders. Lots of people who want to be in charge and perhaps even work very hard, but not many that have that quality that brings people together and makes everyone better.

So many other (every other?) former Bucs QBs in franchise history can be put on that same list as Jameis.

  7. ClwJB Says:

The most constant memory from the Jaboo years “just don’t fumble or throw a pick” and he rarely complied

  8. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

LOL, Brady will not give you a speech, but he sure will get in your face and yell at you!
I never saw Jameis do that.

  9. Tony1775 Says:

Disrespectful to even compare Brady to Jameis in any capacity. Jameis was FSU QB, Bucs QB, and is gone….the end….

  10. Lord Cornelius Says:

lmao I will always have a soft spot for Jameis. What a character

  11. Bucs Win Says:

JW going to eat some L’s Sunday

Ones a turn over machine fraud and ones the goat no comparison

  13. Beeej Says:

A good leader makes you WANT to follow him, WANT to please him

  14. Bucsfan13 Says:

Why is he sitting down with the Slimy Saints this week?! I hate Cam Jordan. I can’t believe he did the podcast when we play them this week

  15. D-Rok Says:

I recently saw a documentary on Brady entitled Becoming the GOAT – The Tom Brady Story, on Prime (I think), which came out last year.

Some really good interviews by lots of influential people in his past such as HS coaches, college coaches, friends, some teammates, etc.

Man, Antowain Smith still looks like he could play, still has great musculature. And Charlie Weis, well, he still cannot play (LOL!).

Great behind-the-scenes stuff mostly about Brady’s desire to win and compete.

@Bucswin, eat some Ws … Love it! Hope he chokes on them. I hate the aints!

  17. Cobraboy Says:

Some “lead” with their mouth. Others with their actions.

    Which is Winston?

    Which is Brady.

  18. Jason.Nilges@jwsoftware.com Says:

    Brady : 7 rings and 10 Superbowls

Jamoist : Zero playoff games and sexual assault.

    See the difference Joe?

  19. Eddie Marz Says:

Hey Gisle isn’t mad at Tom for playing football, she’s mad because he’s not playing football in Miami.

  20. DungyDance Says:

Here is another brilliant speech from Winston:
“And those men looked me in my eye and they said, ‘We got this, Jameis.’ And I said. . . we said. . . I said, ‘Are you strong?’ They said, ‘I’m strong if you strong.’ I said, ‘We strong, then.”

  21. Lakeland Steve Says:

Yup you will never see Brady on television trying to pump up his team giving a rah rah speech and embarrassing everyone by eating W’s.

Just because you want to be a leader, doesn’t make you a leader. It was evident that a majority of the team would not follow Jameis because they knew he was lacking. After he ate the “W” it was over.

I’m not saying he hasn’t grown with the Saints but he was far too immature to lead in Tampa.

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Thing to keep in mind with Winston, the guy was so young when he got here. I can not imagine being that age and being told you’re leading everyone. At that age all you know is what you’ve seen other people do, either in person or online.

Obviously the other big thing is that Winston is a goofy guy, he seems like he’d be really fun to hang out with. Brady meanwhile, while you’d want to hang out with him hoping some groupies fall into your lap, he doesn’t really seem like he’d be a lot of fun to be around unless you’re into grass fried grass for dinner.

Personally, I don’t know why you need another man to lead you at all. It’s kind of gay that you need to look up to someone else to get motivated. Your motivation as a player is your own pride and in the NFL, your paycheck. If you need another man to motivate you, the issue might be with you.

  24. NCBucfan Says:

    Brady’s playoff record- 35-12
    America’s QB playoff record- 0-0

  25. MonkeyMan Says:

I just cracked up Joe when you said you can’t image JW speech. Seriously, what a dumpster fire it’ll be lol

  26. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Obviously, eating a W was Winston’s e=mc2 moment in his mind. Brilliant! 🤡

  27. Buc king Says:

For the most part I agree with your assessment rod munch but I will day you can get inspired by someone else’s work ethic and learn how to become more intelligent and driven with your own if you see someone doing it better then you.

  28. David Says:

The reality is most the Buccaneers love J Winston but they also thought some of his speeches, eating W‘s, were ridiculous. And we’ve all seen him speak, he’s not the brightest bulb.

  29. adam from ny Says:

during jameis’ buffoonish W speech, the look of befuddlement on DJax’s face was just classic…

then jameis slobbered & snacked on his own tasty fingers as he simultaneously when all magoo-ish
