Money Stat Of The Todd Bowles Defense

September 19th, 2022

Telling statistic.

Since Todd Bowles took over the Bucs defense, Bowles has stamped it with a trademark.

Blitzing! Yes, the Bucs like to blitz, but there is another signature trait the Bucs defense has developed with Bowles running the show.

The defense ranks third in takeaways since the start of the 2019 season. The Bucs have 88 in that span. Only the Belicheats and the Steelers have more.

But here is the money stat Joe teased: When the Bucs have at least three takeaways in a game, the Bucs are 9-0 since Bowles arrived.

So now we know why the Bucs froth at the mouth about takeaways and why Bowles wants his defense to total 30 takeaways this season.

If the Bucs get 30, there’s a great chance more than a game or two will feature three takeaways. Yesterday it was five against the slimy Saints. And given recent history, three takeaways in a game means a win.

My favorite thing Todd Bowles did this off-season was tweak the secondary by adding Logan Ryan and letting Whitehead walk so that Mike Davis could take over as starter. You can tell that his strategy of having all three safeties capable of rotating to the nickel position has worked wonders in disguising our coverages, and as a result quarterbacks have been holding onto the ball a couple seconds longer

Now you all can see why the Bucs steered our sites out of the direction of Winston. Wayta go Mike Evans if you ever get fined I’ll be willing to pitch in to pay it. You’re like our arm & like man we had in our biker club 👍. I now tag you The Enforcer

  3. Defense Rules Says:

Turnover Differential (PLUS 4 for the Bucs) & Sacks Differential (PLUS 5 for the Bucs) were THE major differences between the 2 teams in yesterday’s game. All the other major stats were reasonably close (TOP, Yardage, 3rd/4th Down Conversions, Penalties, etc). Tells me that both teams played a hard-fought, physical game but the Bucs came up with more big plays in the final analysis.

  4. Leighroy Says:

Not to sound too cynical or anything, but every team should have a lopsided W-L record if their defense can generate 3 turnovers in a game. The difference is Brady isn’t giving away 3 turnovers himself, like the previous quarterback was.

For the 2nd game in a row:

Carlton Davis, Jamal Dean, Mike Edwards, and Antoine Winfield played 100 percent of snaps with Logan Ryan playing the majority of snaps as the 5th guy in the defensive backfield.

This time, Neal got 2 defensive snaps and SMB still go no defensive snaps.

That lineup looks like it will be the best defensive back tandem in the NFL this season. High praise but through two games probably correct.

  6. geno711 Says:

Waiting on completion percentage against but so far on yesterday’s game.

Logan Ryan: 1 PD, 1 solo tackle, 2 assists, 1 forced fumble.
Antoine Winfield: 1 PD, 6 solo tackles, 1 assist, 1 sack, 1 QB hit
Carlton Davis: 1 PD, 8 solo tackles, 1 assist, 1 fumble recovery.
Mike Edwards: 1 PD, 0 solo tackles, 3 assists, 1 int returned for TD.
Jamal Dean: 2 PD, 3 solo tackles, 2 assists, 2 ints for 24 total return yards.

With all the injuries to key offensive players, we knew the D had to play really tough. They did! These first two games have been so fun to watch. Let’s just hope they stay healthy. At least until we get our O back to full strength.

  8. Lt. Dan Says:

@Leighroy, “like the previous quarterback was.” And still is….

  9. BigMacAttack Says:

While all the idiots whined about our offense injuries a few weeks ago, I called this along with a very few others. Js and a pick 6 yesterday. Here’s your next one. 7 sacks on Aaron Rodgers and 3 more picks next game.

    Bowles to the bowl!!!

  11. BigMacAttack Says:

Keyshawn Vaughn will rush run wild for 100+ yards against the Pack. 31-13

  12. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I am loving Coach Bowles, because the players LOVE him, and it shows!
They are playing very hard for him.

  13. Aaron Says:

Did I hear 9-0 lol was a good one and Shady brady might wanna put a ring on that finger and see his 👪 lol cuz he sure isn’t getting better

  14. Buccos Says:

Yes ME13 is our enforcer. He likes to fight. I saw a video of him on YouTube I think where he got into a fight outside a nightclub. He’s got a temper

  15. stpetebucfan Says:

My favorite thing is that Bowles has coached the stupid out of the team. The mental lapses have almost disappeared.

They did have an OL mixup on the 4-1 run that the Saints stuffed. A guard was pulling, must have thought it was a different call than a simple dive up the gut and the defender was unblocked. Early season mistakes with two first year starters. That will disappear in the next few weeks.

  16. Ron Potter Says:

Takeaways are always a money stat. At the end of every NFL year, it seems like the top 10 teams in either Takeaways or the plus/minus in turnover ration are almost all in the playoffs. Dungy was consistently successful here because his staff also emphasized it, and they actually did drills in practice.
