Mike Evans Compares Jamel Dean To Richard Sherman

September 8th, 2022

Consider that guys who played more than 800 snaps combined at cornerback for Tampa Bay last season are out of the league.

That’s how much better the Buccaneers secondary should be this season?

So good health alone should make the Bucs secondary a lot better against the Cowboys on Sunday night. let alone the depth additions of Logan Ryan and Keanu Neal, and another year of development for the Bucs’ studly young veterans.

Sorry, Dallas, you won’t have Ross Cockrell, Pierre Desir and Richard Sherman to get you excited.

Sherman, the borderline Hall of Fame player, is very busy with the podcast that bears his name and a guest this week was Mike Evans. They talked about Bucs corners and it seems Sherman has a place in his heart for Jamel Dean, who was named a starter with Carlton Davis opposite him.

Evans has mad respect for Dean, too.

“Dean’s physical at that line, man. He’s really good at the line. He’s kind of like you at the line, a long guy that can run,” Evans told Sherman. “His ball skills aren’t as good as yours. He’s faster. He’s super fast man. Dean had a really good camp.”

Sherman laughed at Dean’s ball skills and said, “Dean catch the ball like he’s trying to get in a fight with it.”

Evans laughed and said Sherman would be impressed by interceptions Dean had in training camp, and by the group as a whole.

“They look hungry. All the DBs look hungry,” Evans said, adding that Davis “had a phenomenal camp” after scoring “the well deserved bag” worth eight figures annually.

Joe is confident the depleted Cowboys receiving corps is in for a long Sunday night.

    Love love love Mike.

I’m watching the Rams Bills game tonight wearing my red Bucs Evans 23 jersey. I don’t know why.

  2. Mike Says:

The Bucs defense is set to be great this season. I’m excited to see if they can finally ascend and make us proud!

  3. Biff Barker Says:

    Cool story.

    Let’s beat NOLA for once.

  4. Goatfarmer Says:

Evans wears 13. Stupid Siri thinks it’s a SMB jersey.

  5. BigMacAttack Says:

    GF thx for clarifying that😂😂

  6. BigMacAttack Says:

Siri hates me, we get into heated arguments. She never does anything I ask, and doesn’t put out. What’s the point?

You know I’m a big Dean fan
Too funny though Sherman cutting on Dean about his ball skills
“Looks like he’s getting in fight with the ball”
Dean and Carlton both have had some drops that they gotta cone down with this year
See the ball catch the ball

Actions speak louder than words, but Dean gets 6-8 picks this year and sets the table for next contract, Hopefully here with home team

  9. Pickgrin Says:

All of our CBs are better manned up than sitting back in zones.

Obviously you have to mix things up – but the Bucs played so much zone defense last year that it hampered Dean and Davis productivity whenever they were on the field.

The heavy zone play in 2021 was necessary because in 17 games – 14 different backfield configurations started. It was like – every other game you look over and there’s a different guy playing next to you thats fresh off the practice squad or wasn’t even on the team 3 weeks ago….

If Davis, Dean and SMB can all stay relatively healthy – that continuity will lead to much better play from our secondary in 2022…. and Bowles will be able to call press man coverage a good bit more which (when played well) allows an extra 1/2 second or more for the pass rush to get home….

  10. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Dean is a willing and able tackler. He should be just fine Sunday night. I expect some shakiness early; he often starts the season slow but as a veteran now he may be past that. 17-0. That will be the score and the season record.

  11. geno711 Says:

    @Pickgrin.

I don’t think I follow you. I am always trying to understand the complexities of the coverages in the NFL all the time.

It seems (not sure) to me every single NFL team in 2021 played in their base defense some type of zone. A cover 1 or a cover 3. The Bucs played a cover 3.

For the Bucs in their cover 3, the two outside cornerbacks either:
    1. Line up either in a press coverage near the line of scrimmage; or
    2. Line up in a soft coverage as to not allow big plays about five to seven yards off the line of scrimmage.

Bowles certainly picks #2 more but then adjusts for that in later downs by blitzing more than other DC’s IMO. It has seemed to work reasonably well.

Was there even 1 team last year that was considered a man coverage team or a press team? Certainly not the Rams with Raheem Morris and Jalen Ramsey.

  12. Goatfarmer Says:

BigMac – I say it’s time we tell Stupid Siri to hit the road until she learns how to perform….um…..certain “services” As you implied.

  13. Goatfarmer Says:

Meanwhile, double Cee Dee Lamb. Take him away. The other Sowgirl receivers should be containable with single coverage.

  14. Pickgrin Says:

Geno – Don’t confuse “press” vs “soft” with “man” vs “zone”.

There are such things as Press Zone and Soft Man if you want to use those terms – but Press Man and Soft Zone as generalities are the norms. The first word describes the proximity of the CB to the WR at the snap and the 2nd word describes the type of coverage being utilized.

“Man” coverage means the guy you are assigned is your guy. You go where he goes and if the ball comes to him you need to be in position to defend the ball from getting to that one player.

In “Zone” – each non rushing defender is assigned an area to defend against the pass – and whoever enters that “zone” is your man to cover.

Our starting CBs are better at playing Man than zone. But Bowles only choice last year was to play mostly zone defense in a bunch of games – because of so many injuries and the inexperienced players that had to come in and try to keep other teams from scoring on them. Zone hides weaknesses in you backfield much better than Man coverage does.

I laughed out loud at this line from Sherman:

Sherman laughed at Dean’s ball skills and said, “Dean catch the ball like he’s trying to get in a fight with it.”

  16. teacherman777 Says:

I once told Dean on Instagram he has the skills to be a top 5 shut down CB in the NFL.

If he had Carlton Davis’s heart, he would be better than Carlton Davis.

We need Dean to get angry.

Tom made Donovan Smith find his fire, now we need Tom to help Dean find his RAGE.

  17. BigMacAttack Says:

GF, lmao! I’m in! Let’s do it.

  18. Brandon Says:

Davis very good… but Dean has been our best CB the past two seasons. Anyone that cares to argue that really has no clue.
