Bucs Inching Their Way To Being Takeaway Leaders

September 27th, 2022

Bucs DB Logan Ryan.

Yeah, on Sunday the Bucs had two takeaways. One was cool as can be.

Monster defensive tackle Vita Vea was in pass coverage — when is the last time you heard of a 360-pound dude in pass coverage? — when he absolutely blasted Packers running back Aaron Jones in the back near the goal line.

Joe thought Vea might have broken the guy in half as Lavonte David hit the front of Jones’ body. Instead of a completion or worse, a touchdown, the ball rolled into the end zone and Logan Ryan pounced on it for one of his two takeaways.

And Ryan’s pick of drama queen Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was another takeaway.

Since Todd Bowles came to Tampa, the Bucs have 90 takeaways, third-most in the NFL since through the last three-plus seasons.

Who leads? The Steelers with 93. Joe has a hunch with T.J. Watt banged up, the Steelers’ takeaways will drop this year. That ought to give the Bucs a chance to overtake the Steelers for most takeaways since 2019.

This season, the Bucs are tied for the most takeaways in the league with the Crows and the Jags — the Jags? — each with eight.

Five Bucs takeaways have been picks. Only the Jags and the Crows have more picks (6).

Hey Joe, On Logan Ryan’s interception, I noticed that he celebrated by pointing to the name on his back. This was a classic Ronde celebration. I know Ryan has mentioned in the past how he is a huge fan of Ronde. It’d be cool if you asked him about that to confirm that he really was paying respect to Ronde!

  2. Hodad Says:

Jags have 1st round picks all over their defense, and at QB. Now they also have a legit NFL head coach. Are they for real, time will tell. I wouldn’t put them in that garbage team group anymore though.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs are on-track to get 45 takeaways this season. Also on-track for 23 giveaways this season, which would result in a PLUS 22 Turnover Differential. THAT would be really impressive.

  4. Dooley Says:

2 weeks in a row, we watch our backend show a 2-high alignment pre-snap, only for one safety to sink into a robber zone and force an INT at crucial points in the 2nd half. With a clean bill of health we can keep it up, and the Chiefs come with plenty of opportunities with they volume of pass plays they run on a weekly basis.

  5. Duane Says:

This defense is coming to life. It doesnt break, and gets really opportunistic in the red zone. Hope it lasts for another 17 games. Looks as good as the defense we had on that championship run.

Our defense is very healthy……..and, it doesn’t look like we missed Hicks….

The addition of Logan Ryan to the secondary has made a world of difference……his vet leadership and smarts have led to better communication.

They are all ON THE SAME PAGE……..# 1 Buc cliche.

Chiefs offense going thru a similar finger -pointing scenario as us

Logan Ryan is only making a little over a milllion ( $1.12 per Over The Cap .com )…what a deal & steal. It’s player additions like these that can put a team over the top. The receiver room is taking up a good share of the cap as a comparison.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    What a steal…..Logan Ryan for $1,120,000

  10. Craig Says:

It is a transitional team. Next season the defense will tell the offense that they only need 17 points per game to make a run on the playoffs.

The defensive salaries will also rival the offense, next season.

Bucs pass defense looks the best its been since the 2020 playoffs. The secondary being healthy thus far this season has really allowed them to live up to their potential. It really shows how constrained Bowles was last season having to play so many back-up DBs at once. Hopefully, the offense can get healthy soon. Seeing so many season-ending injuries to key players on other teams has me feeling better about the Bucs injuries.

  12. David Says:

Great read by Ryan. Loving this D. The coverage has been great.

The sacks will come in bunches.
JTS has been very good. Shaq has been a beast.
Hall looks like the real deal.
