Logan Ryan Cut

August 30th, 2022

Ex-Bucs DB Logan Ryan.

This blows Joe’s mind!

Aside from Antoine Winfield, no defensive back had a better camp than Logan Ryan, the veteran cerebral leader (in one Joe’s opinion). Yet the Bucs bounced him today.

Huh???

Joe is beginning to wonder if camp means anything any longer. Dudes take off for 11 days to go to the Bahamas and practice like they never left; guys that ball out in camp like Tyler Johnson and Ryan get bounced.

There could be a method to the madness here. Given Ryan’s vested playing time he is not subjected to waivers. So he can sign with anyone.

Could Bucs AC/DC-loving GM Jason Licht have a handshake deal with Ryan to bring him back tomorrow after Ryan Jensen goes on IR?

Really, really a head scratcher here.

Whatever has or has not been arranged, exposing a player always comes at the risk that someone calls him up and offers him an extra $1 or 2 million to spend the next five months on their team.

  1. Bucschamp Says:

    Maybe they’ll sign him back

  2. Steven007 Says:

Now this blows my mind. I agree with Joe, I hope there’s some kind of deal in place to bring him back after the roster is set.

  3. BT Says:

    To your question, yes.

  4. Andre Cook Says:

Relax JoeBucsFan… he was cut so they can bring him back Wednesday because he won’t have to go through waivers

  5. Quiet Chaos Says:

Just a quick roster move. He’ll be back after they get Ryan Jensen on short term IR.

  6. Natural Selection Says:

It is being widely speculated that Logan will be signed back as soon as Jensen is put on IR. His release being a bit of roster manipulation to leave open the possibility Jensen could come back during the playoffs.

  7. Bucsfan13 Says:

Joe is spot on! Camp meant nothing. The WR competition was a total farce! Perriman didn’t even participate because he was injured, and Miller didn’t impress. Tyler Johnson, on the other hand, had a great practice. Evans spoke glowingly about him. This won’t go over well in the locker room

  8. Canabuc Says:

Since he is not subject to waivers this is a roster move to get Jensen on short term or but he has to be on 53 man roster. He will be resigned tomorrow I can almost guarantee it.

  9. BillyBucco Says:

    If not this is ridiculous.

  10. SB~LV Says:

    After Jensen goes on IR
    He’ll return… guess

  11. D-Rok Says:

This is one I did NOT see coming. From all previous accounts, it seemed Ryan was actually a stellar addition to our young secondary. WOW – I thought he was going to help this year.

  12. AL121976 Says:

Tyler Johnson and now this ??????

  13. miken Says:

please tell me he returns whenjensen goes ir

  14. Ash Says:

Greg explained the move on Twitter he will be back tomorrow.

  15. Hodad Says:

Captain obvious can confirm Joe, that’s what the Bucs are up to. I must admit I was at first shocked to see the headline, but now I see the method to the madness.

  16. HC Grover Says:

El Blundo is on the job. I hope Dallas goes well. It will be the tell for the season.

  17. Dooley Says:

He’ll be back after Jensen is placed on IR, this was the veteran cut that needed to happen to make the move on Jensen. Also, makes sense because we’re not on the hook for Ryans’ salary this year iirc, but he should be back tomorrow or by week’s end

  18. DBS Says:

That has to be the answer. No way they can play with the same pitiful secondary they have been. Something has to change there and be upgraded.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

No way he was cut outright………..he has a guaranteed salary and can play multiple positions…..is a leader in the secondary… no way they would cut him..

  20. Steven007 Says:

If Neal made the roster, it would make zero sense for Ryan not to. Hoping to see him back on the team tomorrow.

  21. Ed Says:

Joe, I have been reading your articles for years. In my opinion, while you are fun at at times, other times you are borderline insulting. You seem like a condescending smart a…you need humble pie sooner rather than later.
    Whaaatt? –Joe
It is great when you stay off your condescending insulting comments about Brady, it takes away from whatever it is you are trying to do. Joe loves Tom Brady. Greatest QB in Bucs history and Joe has advocated the Bucs offer him $50-plus million to play next season.–Joe As a Bucs fan, I am getting tired of it. Sure, you will keep your readers who love the your approach, but you can do better I think. Peace.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Because of his tenure, he is the only type of player that can’t be picked up by another team unless he wishes….he’ll be back.

  23. PassingThru Says:

As I posted earlier, bear in mind that Ryan’s a vet, so he’s been released and not waived. That means no team can claim him. I think the release means that the Bucs are trying to create some room on their 53 man roster to claim a couple of waiver wire players. After they claim them, the Bucs can simply waive or release another player, and re-sign Logan Ryan.

  24. Richard Dickson Says:

You scratch your head, yet mention exactly what’s probably going to happen. This is the exact move you make in this situation. Cut a vet who won’t hit waivers so you can roster Jensen, then re-sign Ryan as soon as Jensen hits the PUP list.

  25. Buccobill99 Says:

He’ll be back tomorrow after jesen goes on ir relax

    wat?

  28. AL121976 Says:

    Is grover “the realist”?

  29. ViSyl Says:

Yeah, he will be back tomorrow, only explanation

  30. AL121976 Says:

    or is that Pablo?

  31. 55 99 47 20 Says:

    I’m confused lol

  32. Marine Buc Says:

Another solid player cut that doesn’t play special teams. I bet Joe is right – they will bring him back after Jenson goes on IR.

It’s tough for a reserve player (especially a safety) to make an NFL roster without playing special teams.

  33. GOB Says:

Belichick did this all the time. I think and hope it’s just roster finagling. If the bucs secondary needs anything, it’s experience and knowledge of proper alignment. Ryan is exactly that guy. If he doesn’t come back, expect many of the same mistakes back there. Really hope he comes back.

  34. 55 99 47 20 Says:

    Surely he’ll be back tomorrow

  35. 55 99 47 20 Says:

    Ed, ya mad bruh??

  36. Buc4evr Says:

Seems like a dangerous game. What if the Bucs can’t bring Ryan back because another team makes a better offer?

  37. Christos Says:

Have to think he ll probably be back. But to your point that camp performance doenst matter sometimes there is the Johnson cut. He was really showing improvement and Perriman didnt even practice. Even Thompkins vs Darden. These are buffling

  38. D-Rok Says:

My earlier comment was of the “O crap, how can this be?” reaction. After reading many of you fine fan commenters, I’m not freaking as much.

I hope he gets back on the roster soon, and this move was just maneuvering for roster spots.

  39. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Calm down Ed.

  40. 55 99 47 20 Says:

Noticed on IG, Tyler Johnson was recently posting stuff about worshipping the universe .. Guess it didn’t work out to well for him lol. Ed was his fortune teller and TJ called him for a refund today .. So, Ed is unhappy and taking it out on Joe. Ya can’t make this stuff up lol

  41. Alvafan Says:

Steve Christy had a “handshake “ deal like this in 1992. Then left for Buffalo where he had a stellar career. I’m not saying Ryan has plans to go elsewhere but I remember the Bucs had egg on their face for losing a player that would have been under contract for at least 1 more year.

  42. 55 99 47 20 Says:

    *too. Poor Ed

  43. Listnfrmafar Says:

Belichick cut Butler and offer to Ryan $1.5 mil more than Bucs paying. Nice play, bye bye!

  44. WhoaFatLennyBamALam Says:

Football is a game of chess and Joe is analyzing with a checkers like mind…

  45. donuts Says:

Why not cut Darden? Less risk. Its not like he would have been picked up by any sensible GM.

  46. CrackWise Says:

    Keanu Neal > Logan Ryan.

    Zyon McCollum anyone!!!

  47. CrackWise Says:

Why not Darden. IDK, cause he is in his second year and has track record of improving and being a dynamic offensive threat vs an often-injured old vet Safty

  48. Melvin Junior Says:

He’ll be back tomorrow after Jensen goes on IR… Just thought I’d type this too, since EIGHTEEN ‘Other People’ felt the need to so. It’s like…

  49. Netwalker Says:

    Smart move….. if it works.

Ah, yes. Not the same situation but very close. Back then NFL teams were allowed to ‘protect’ 37 players every year from becoming free agents, and those not protected became “Plan B” free agents. Ronnie Lott and Roger Craig were left unprotected by the 49ers as SF assumed they would stay…then they took off for Oakland.

And yes, Steve Christie agreed that he would stay in Tampa, then booked for Buffalo.

  51. CrackWise Says:

Oh and yall are sleeping on Nolan Turner.

Just saying, he may not make the team, but dude is a baller and will play STs

  52. SOEbuc Says:

I watched a 30 minute interview with Casey Phillips put out yesterday. He’s going no where. But I also said that no doubt TJ was going to be number five so….

  53. Nick2 Says:

So much for veteran leadership in the secondary!!!!

  54. Oxycondoms Says:

Sounds like roster manipulation but boy was i hoping this was a sneak peak into the todd bowles era. I kind of miss the good ole days

  55. CrackWise Says:

IDK, AW and Edwards are pretty good vet leaders. Along with Neal.

You people just like to cry cause it feels good. I dont know what else it could be with yall.

  56. SB~LV Says:

When do we sign that one veteran starting caliber interior lineman that has one more year in him ?

  57. SOEbuc Says:

    Crackwise

Just to let you know, vets are considered usually after first four years. AW and ME are neither.

  58. CrackWise Says:

Consider why TJ got cut. He had guys in front of him that did what he does and better than him. Same size and everything.

Ryan is in that same boat. Plus he is 31.

    If he comes back, great.

BUT we have two other young ROOKIE ball hawks to consider.

Just saying. Either way. This is one of those tough cuts that we all knew was coming.

  59. CrackWise Says:

    SOEbuc,

I agree, UNLESS. They have started and won playoff games and a Superbowl.

PS, Edwards is in his 4 year and AWs dad was a Pro Bowler in the NFL.

    So, I mean you know.

  60. Rod Munch Says:

He got cut by the Giants, who had a terrible defense — it’s not exactly like we’re talking about John Lynch here.

With that said, I think it’s very likely a handshake deal as Joe said, that makes a ton of sense and happens with vets that teams really trust.

    We’ll see.

  61. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

Bro who is this 55 99 47 dude? Imitation is the greatest form of flattery I suppose!
It’s about time I updated mine for griese, Amish Rifle, Brady, Evans, maaaaybe one or two others.

  62. SB~LV Says:

    LR
    Will be back!
He was featured on the Bucs YouTube channel promoting his animal shelter thingee

  63. Bird Says:

Appears the jensen move confirmed and he will be back at practice tomorrow

  64. K2 Says:

    more confusion???

  65. Letsbucinggo Says:

Raiders released Alex Leatherwood ok Licht pick him up.

  66. 55 99 47 20 Says:

    At 99 97 19 18 17 16 15 -40 ….
What’s up slick. Uhhh, noticed you played off my name couple weeks ago, but have it your way … Idc

Ya 4got 63, and 12, and 54, and many more.

Get a life ya silly boi lol
You might as well just change to 99-1

  67. PassingThru Says:

Leatherwood is versatile: He sucks badly at both OT and OG.

  68. Dooley Says:

    @PassingThru

and especially terrible in pass pro

  69. SufferingSince76 Says:

Who the heck is El Blundo?

  70. David Says:

I imagine he will be back because he’s very smart and a great leader. As for his play in preseason games that we saw, it seemed very average. Regardless, I can’t imagine he’s not signed back tomorrow

  71. PassingThru Says:

Uh, isn’t El Blundo a soccer star for Real Madrid or something?

  72. sasquatch Says:

He’ll be back. He wants to be in Tampa and they want him here, so no worries.

  73. Tony Says:

Maybe Licht is working out a trade with SF for Lynch.😃

  74. Tony Says:

They let Borregales go so they can sign Aguayo to put with Succop.🙄

  75. PassingThru Says:

    @Dooley

Amen. And to think, Leatherwood was an Outland Trophy winner.

  76. BlindManSee Says:

Nice picture of Ryan. Hope you are able to keep using it. I hate to think they really released him for good.

  77. Tony Says:

I’d definitely consider trading for a reliable OL now. The whole OL is dropping & they need to protect Brady because he won’t be playing much longer & it definitely won’t help if they don’t give him much protection now. With the way the OL is dropping right now I just hope Brady can make it the whole year.

  78. Tony Says:

If Licht is a big fan of AC/DC I’m kind of wondering if he’s been living on HAVE A DRINK ON ME. DIZZY DRUNK & FIGHTING TEQUILA WHITE LIGHTNING! He might be hitting a little too much of them.

  79. steele Says:

If he is not brought back, this will be the stupidest move of the season, possibly of the past three seasons. Leadership, experience, brains of the secondary. Without him, the defense will absolutely suck, back to disarray again.

If this decapitation is purely for roster manipulation, it is still a bad look in any case. Smacks of desperation. There is plenty of other dead wood on the roster, but they remove a leader.

Might as well release Brady while they’re at it.

  80. Mike Says:

They are re signing him tomorrow after Jensen goes to IR. There’s no way in hell they cut him. He is the guy who is going to turn this secondary around!

  81. steele Says:

For those assuming that Ryan will be back, “of course” it’s for something to do with Jensen, “of course”. How do we know. We don’t. Considering how clumsily and mysteriously they’ve addressed everything this year, don’t assume genius here. Lower your expectations.

This is team is Brady increasingly isolated, “in-house options”, and a total coaching question mark at the top.

  82. Tampabaybucfan Says:

To cut your 1st round pick a year later must hurt….and his salary is fully guaranteed….about $8 mil this year…

That will help send him through waivers…..but I’d pass…..

  83. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Leatherwood is who I was mentioning.

  84. sasquatch Says:

Leatherwood. Who made the call on that draft pick? Might’ve been the same guy who decimated our roster in the 2000’s and never had a decent draft in Tampa. #MostOverratedCoachInHistory

  85. PassingThru Says:

Mayock, who was probably following Chucky’s orders.

  86. Listnfrmafar Says:

Alex Westherwood, just waived by Raiders.

  87. Woodenman Says:

Steele what are you babling about.

  88. Tom lamphier Says:

Yeah Joe…..it’s not just ” Guys” taking off 11 days….it’s the best ever to do it named a Tom Brady….so what now Joe…back to the golf cart????

  89. Scott Bostic Says:

WTH!?! They just picked em up, they’ve drop a few i didnt think they would. Johnson/Sterns looks phenomenal! Someone big must be coming in that they are making room for, Gronk/Edelman possibly? I’d hope so that would be EPIC!
