Joe Tryon-Shoyinka More Of A Pass Rush Specialist?

August 15th, 2022

Expectations.

There are elevated expectations this season for second-year outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.

After getting drafted in the first round last year, just about everyone knew JTS would someday be asked to take Jason Pierre-Paul’s role on the roster. That may have come sooner than expected.

Last year JPP was not his normal self as he played with a blown rotator cuff. His contract expired and the Bucs decided not to re-sign him. JPP, as Joe is typing this here article, is still unemployed.

So JTS is being asked to replace JPP now, perhaps sooner than expected.

JTS stayed in Tampa after the Bucs lost to the Rams in the playoffs rather than returning to his Washington home on the west coast. He immediately began working out to prep himself for this season. He remade his body, put on man weight through training, and went to a pass-rushing clinic.

By most accounts, JTS seems like a different player. Joe heard Bucs sources say they decided to streamline some of JTS’s responsibilities in order to unlock his pass-rushing skills.

Appearing on “Movin’ the Chains” last week when co-hosts Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller stopped at One Buc Palace on their training camp tour, general manager Jason Licht seemed to confirm that less will be on JTS’s plate this fall.

“I think [JTS] is going to have a big year the way he looks right now,” Licht said. “He’s more comfortable.

“The scheme, he didn’t play a whole lot last year but he did play in spots and we asked him to do a lot. He’s going to be a little bit more ‘pin his ears back’ this year. At least he’s more comfortable with that.”

That doesn’t sound like JTS will be on the field much for run-heavy down and distances.

Joe would be stoked to see JTS get close to 10 sacks and a boatload of pressures. The way Joe sees it, the more JTS can get to the quarterback, that’s fewer bodies trying to stop Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett on the other side.

Unleash the hounds!

Yes he is a pass rush specialist.

  2. beano Says:

First round wasted pick. Would have been available much later.

  3. Joseph C Simmons Says:

I don’t think that quote necessarily means he won’t be playing on 1st and 2nd down. Just that he won’t be moved around as much. I saw his playing spy/middle linebacker last year a LOT.

  4. Anonymous Says:

You dorks say that almost everyone we draft would have been available later. Smdh

  5. Anonymous Says:

Well if JTS is only slated for 8-10 sacks, we might as well put Nelson in as the starter. 80% of the snaps for him last year would have extrapolated to 12-13 sacks, and he plays the run better to boot!

  6. Biff Barker Says:

So a first round pick who is relegated to passing downs?

Buc fans I present to you Jane Tryon Shoyinka. Comparing this guy to JPP in any way is just wrong.

  7. Bucs&Bolts Says:

So glad we have this stud he is going to be a menace to QBs watch out now ! Complete package he is gonna shock some people

  8. Kentucky Buc Says:

Says nothing about being relegated to passing downs, but hey, make it up anyway you want. Obviously not going to be moved around to other positions as much.

  9. Biff Barker Says:

All you Jane fans can hope all you want.

  10. Breadwinnerbob Says:

Nelson is better give him a shot

  11. Wild Bill Says:

Last year was truely a rookie year for him. Sometimes looked like a chicken with its head cut off. No longer a rookie. A bit heavier frame. Needs to read and react appropriately this year and not take himself out of position. Has great upside potential and hopefully gets it all together this year. We will hopefully see an improved player in the final preseason game.

  12. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

For a number ONE pick to be a situational player, well, that’s not a good thing…..

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

This Kid truly needs to step up this year. I mean, really step it up. Not to impressed with him being a 1st rounder. But its time for him to let it fly..if he can. A lot depends on his play. I’d hate to see him be a 1st rd bust.

  14. mark2001 Says:

Sure guys. He will play JPP’s position, which allows for more of that “pin your ears back” pass rushing. Too bad JPP was a wasted first round draft pick for the Giants. As a player that is better in certain situations, they could have drafted him in the second round. SMH.

  15. Eddie Marz Says:

Jezz guys why all the negative comments? There defining his role to get the most out of him. Part of the game is making adjustments and maxing out your ability. Some of you remind me of jet fans. GOBUCS!

  16. Goatfarmer Says:

If the Bucs expect to finish the first 4 games at 2-2, he’d better show up and show out.

    Reading is fundamental.

  19. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Here is the thing, nobody lines up and runs the ball at us. We see 60 passes a game so that is a full time player.

  20. Mike Says:

Simeon Rice was more of a “pin your ears back” type of edge rusher. I’m all good with that. That doesn’t mean you’re not on the field on 1st down, just that you are going to play the run on your way to the QB.

  21. Crunchbuc Says:

B-U-S-T. Sign an edge rusher now!

  22. sasquatch Says:

Wow, you as$clowns calling him a bust and a wasted pick are first class pr!cks. Like many m0rons, you apparently think a rookie is supposed to be a pro bowler immediately or he’s a failed pick. He showed enough last year to be optimistic and he’s trained his a55 off in the off-season, but you whiners still see fit to sh!t all over it. Enjoy your miserable ph0ecking day.

  23. Eddie Marz Says:

2-2 for the first four games? LMAO! It wouldn’t surprise me if we started the season 4-0. Put those other teams on notice. We’re coming to kick your ass’s and we’re getting that trophy back. GOBUCS!

  24. Goatfarmer Says:

I still crack up thinking about Gene Deckerhoff calling him “Tryon-Showinski” last year. LOL.

I couldn’t agree more. So many comments from so many posters who have absolutely no idea want they are talking about! Just the eye test will tell you JTS has what it takes to be an outstanding player. Speed, quicks, power bend and seems to want work hard which may become his biggest asset. Hopefully JTS balls out this year.

Resident internet tough guy has yet to figure out Jane is a fifth rounder at best.

  27. Bangkok Buc Says:

Was he not the very last pick in 1st round as we were the Champs?
Why are people on here whining he’s a bust like he was a top 10 pick. They knew he was raw and he seems to be progressing. Give the kid a chance FFS

Well, if you followed the draft you’d know that JTS was picked about where he was rated… and Jason Licht has a pretty good track record in the draft… So maybe your personal scouting reports (I’m sure you must have them, because you’re an authority), showed him as a 5th rounder. What a marooon…

Size, speed, athletic ability all are top tier. Work ethic has become apparent. Bucs front office and coaches have faith in him… but I’m sure your opinion must be valid. 5th rounder at best… Uh huh, please tell us more.

  29. Goatfarmer Says:

Everyone is raving about Showinski. Let’s see what the Polish Pass Rusher has!

  30. LakelandSteve Says:

I have been saying this since OTA’s and now Tryon-shoyinka’s backup is hurt and looks like he will be out awhile. Would it really hurt to try and re-sign JPP and see what he has left in the tank? If not we need someone who can come in and play a little run defense but can still get after the passer.

  31. David Says:

I don’t care if he’s coming out on definite run downs and Gholston comes in or Hall or Nelson… I really don’t care what the rotation is as long as they defend the run like they did in preseason so far and they pin their ears back and get to the QB this year!

  32. Jerseybuc Says:

Man some of you bandwagon ass fans! Just go away!
Jason has proven he knows how to draft and coaching staff has proved they can develop them. So shut the fu@$ up!

  33. steele Says:

JTS was raw. Period. Athletic, but lacking in technique as well as strength. Until he proves otherwise, he still is, plus some laudable offseason improvement. We’ll see.

I’m all for situational pass rushers who are consistently terrifying and effective. The problem with JTS is that he hasn’t proven he has the techniques to be that pass rusher. Not yet. All we can do is hope. In the meantime, the only legit pass rusher on the roster is Shaq. He can’t do it alone.
