“I’ve Built Tight Secondaries”

August 5th, 2022

New Bucs safety/cornerback Logan Ryan.

Joe has never heard a player speak in the way Bucs cornerback/safety Logan Ryan does.

He’s talking from a different playbook.

Sure, there are team-first players on the Bucs and around the league. But Ryan takes it to a new level. That’s why you heard Todd Bowles on the Ira Kaufman Podcast explain that Ryan, essentially, took over as the defensive backs leader — in June.

Ryan explained to the AP Pro Football podcast that he learned a long time ago that the NFL generally is not about relationships when it comes to players.

“They treat you like a business asset,” he explained.

But Ryan said he fights against that dynamic daily and knows Super Bowl winners aren’t about business.

“… Championship teams, they require a lot of relationships. And I’m a relationship-builder. I’ve built tight secondaries. I’ve built good defense,” Ryan said. “And I’ll be a part of that [in Tampa], just my style of play is very team-first. It’s very willing to switch positions, willing to guard different matchups, willing to fall on my sword, per se. So what I learned in my career is what winning means to me and how much the team means to me more than some individual accolades. And that’s a good fit because that’s what this team’s about.”

Joe is sure Ryan didn’t mis-speak. He really believes that he’s built tight defensive backs units. That’s how hard he works at it.

Just imagine if the Bucs defensive backs stay healthy, with Ryan and Keanu Neal added to the mix this season. It might be the most competitive and experienced unit in the NFL. And if Ryan gets his way, the most selfless.

This is what it’s all about. If you put the team before yourself, your team will be the best it can be.

    A true Schiano Man!

The opposite mentality than that of Brent “I’m not paid to guard that guy” Grimes. Love it, go Bucs! That is the difference in a championship mentality, true, selfless, buy-in.

    Go Bucs!

Ryan sounds like the anti Devin White when he speaks. Seems like a pros pro.

Ryan was an excellent FA pickup…..a team leader….brings versatility & experience to our secondary…..exactly what it needed.

I look forward to a more experienced Winfield, Edwards, SMB, Davis, Dean…..

I think our defense will surprise…..in a good way.

Grew up in Jersey, not Louisiana

Great signing. Compared to last year, Ryan will bring smarts, while Neal will lay the wood. I’m excited about this year’s secondary and am hopeful they will collectively play much better.

  7. Buczilla Says:

This dude sounds cool and if he backs it up with his play, then maybe our secondary won’t get nuked the way I think it’s going to in the first four games.

Nice we have some mature leadership in the D backfield, that takes it personally. I think it could make a huge difference over the season.

This is such a breath of fresh air! I may go out and buy his jersey.

There is every reason to believe this will be our best defensive backfield in years and we were not bad these last two years.

I think Bowles really wants to put that part of this team as one of the team strengths. Would not be surprised if that part of this team is top 10 in all important stats next year.
