“Coach Until He’s Not Breathing Anymore”

August 10th, 2022

Tom Moore won’t quit.

Aside from the bizarre and public “changing of the towel” routine by center Robert Hainsey, there are few more comical training camp moments to Joe than when Bucco Bruce Arians is seen on his covered golf cart driving by senior Bucs offensive assistant coach Tom Moore.

Arians never seems to stop to offer Moore a ride. C’mon, Coach!

Keep in mind that Moore turns 84 in November and he’s wearing long pants and sleeves at practice in the searing heat.

Former longtime NFL offensive coordinator Charlie Weis was at Bucs practice on Saturday and told his SiriusXM NFL Radio audience that he talked to Moore for a while.

“I think that he’s going to pass away on a football field. I think that’s his goal in life,” Weis said of Moore. “His goal in life is to coach until he’s not breathing any more.”

Joe last chatted with Moore at the NFL Scouting Combine. As Moore left a crowded late-night Indianapoli bar where he was munching on nachos and hanging out with people nearly half his age, Joe got up to hit Moore with a few questions.

Yes, Moore loves his job to the extreme. And he’s no figurehead. He’s involved in the early stages of the game-planning each week and he’s one of the first to arrive at One Buc Palace.

One of the great Moore stories Joe heard was about when COVID lockdowns first hit Tampa. Moore had to be really be prodded and pushed to leave the building. He didn’t want to go. Too much film to break down.

I think coach Moore is on the TB12 diet may we all do this well.

Tom knew what was up. Father Dungy had some great stories about him on Simms’ podcast last week, going back to his college days.

  3. Ausgust 1976 Buc Says:

Tom Moore is the man that helped Dungy actually discover the Forward pass lol when he became the Head Coach at Indy.

With the mentality of the Bucs stated by Rich McKay in Dungy’s time “The Bucs are not a QB driven team” How encouraging for fans that nonsense was.

So Tony came out of the dark ages in Indy from his Woody Hayes style offense, run, run run run pass, run run run run run pass run run run run run run.

Tony can thank Tom Moore and Peyton Manning for that Super Bowl Title.

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!

National treasure. Put him in the HOF right now. Why wait, let him enjoy it while he’s alive.

  8. Lakeland Steve Says:

Biden makes Moore look like a 20 year old. At least Moore knows what planet he’s on and doesn’t stand behind 9 year old girls sniffing their hair.

Kudos to BA for giving him a job, he’d be dead without it.

And Kudos to JL for keeping him, and I would say, just make him a Bucs coach for life now. When Todd leaves, whoever replaces him needs to accept Tom in the role he has. Period. I hope he coaches Bucs QBs and offense for another decade at least.
