Scotty Miller, A Brewing Special Teams Star?

July 14th, 2022

Bucs special teams weren’t so special in 2021.

(Yes, Joe could be much more blunt and brutal, but it’s July. Joe’s trying to be delicate.)

So the Bucs should treasure any resource they have that can help the special teams. That brings to the table Scotty Miller.

The Bucs’ fourth-year receiver is in a contract year. Miller largely wasn’t able to carry over his 2020 success into last season because he battled a turf toe injury nearly all year. But Miller did impact special teams.

He recovered a key fumble as a gunner on the punt team in a one-score game at Indianapolis, and Miller also forced a fumble against the Eagles in the playoffs.

Joe learned from a general manager long ago that if you don’t start in the NFL, you better be able to play special teams or you are a dead man walking. So the fact Miller proved he can critically impact special teams caught Joe’s attention.

When Joe spoke with Miller earlier in the spring, he was rather proud of his accomplishments on special teams.

“I try to be a star in my role, whatever my role is,” Miller said. “Whether that is a gunner, go play on the kickoff, whatever it may be, I try to do to the best of my ability.

“I think I can play at a high level at the receiver position. I think I proved that since I played here. … Whatever I can do, I will do to the best of my ability.”

Miller’s special teams play helped the Bucs win two games last year. That’s key. And given how the Bucs’ special teams stinks, any help Miller provides is more than welcome.

    Yawn……. another Scotty post.

  4. Lt. Dan Says:

A gunner does not a “star” make. Dude needs to return kicks and punts. We have an opening every year.

    LOL!!!

Keith Armstrong, have you met Scooter? He is very fast. Maybe he can help out here?

Coach Bowles, I know you did not have the time and opportunity to make changes in you coaching staff this year, but Special Teams might be an area you want to look at.

23 rd July 52 years ago I was inducted into the Army after being drafted… different kind of training camp 🫡

  9. Goatfarmer Says:

Keith Armstrong needs to meet the Turk and be unemployed. Now. Yesterday. Dude is a disgrace. Todd – do something about it.

ST helps Scotty with a crowded field of WRs……but Buca have proven that they will let ST players go in FA…….Scotty will have to earn his contract as a WR.

  11. Mikebuc40 Says:

A lot of Scotty Miller posts this off-season.

  12. Dooley Says:

It’s going to be a battle have we’ve got 13 WRs competing for 6/7 spots on the 53-man roster. Plus, Miller will be competing with DBs for a spot on any of the kicking units, but we’ll see how his and the fate of others play out leading up to roster cuts.

  13. SB~LV Says:

Whomever the Swiss Army knife guy is he’ll also have to be the best route runner of the bunch, something I have not seen out of Miller

  14. Onetrickpony Says:

    I’ll second that Goatfarmer.
ST isn’t so special and hasn’t been in awhile

I find it curious that a depth wide receiver seemingly gets the spotlight everyday now. I like Scotty the body as much as anyone. Has made a couple big plays for us. But on a roster of 52 starters and about 35 to 40 other players trying to make the roster, I’m not sure why this second tier receiver is grabbing an article or two everyday now. So many other stories to potentially mine from this pre-training camp roster.

  16. Beeej Says:

Scotty can’t be any worse as a returner than the guy we DRAFTED to be a returner

  17. tampabayallday Says:

Better than Darden, Scotty doesn’t blink or hesitate like Darden does.

  18. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

As a gunner against the Eagles he took that inside release and left his man in the dust, ran across the field and got there as the punt was coming down. Also layed the wood enough to insure the turnover.

  19. Anonymous Says:

Scotty Miller needs to prove to the bucs that he can be useful in the offense. Another way he can prove that he is useful is be able to run different routes in my he has good speed to be able to run go routes but running go all the time will not work

  20. RustyRhinos Says:

Let us all hope he has put on enough muscle to not get redirected at the line of scrimmage, and that muscle will allow him to not fall over at the first touch of a tackle. Yes he is fast and has good hands, but is not big enough to shed RB at the line and gets worked over in passes over the middle. This is the NFL.
