Todd Bowles A Players Coach?

June 10th, 2022

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Joe thinks Todd Bowles did and said something yesterday, while very small in the grand scheme of things, that won him a lot of respect.

The Bucs coach, in his first year in charge, ordered his team into the Glazer Shed for the final practice of minicamp. And the practice was abbreviated (in part thanks to Ryan Jensen catching a pooch punt from the foot of rookie free agent receiver Kameron Brown).

It was barely sprinkling outside but Bowles marched his team into the air conditioning. That was welcome for the players but here is the reasoning Bowles gave after practice for having the final minicamp practice indoors.

“I didn’t want anyone getting hurt on the [wet] turf going on vacation,” Bowles said.

You cannot tell Joe that didn’t buy Bowles more street cred with his team. That demonstrated to his players that Bowles is looking out for them.

Sure, Bowles was likely motivated to make sure players are healthy when training camp begins, scheduled for July 26 (so Joe understands). And the lightning alarms were sounding yesterday morning, so the Bucs likely would have been forced inside at some point.

But players really, really respect coaches they believe are looking out for them. And that helps develop not just trust, but a bond. Players want to bust their tails for guys who have their backs.

It may only be early June but Bowles already has a win as head coach.

Most definitely SB and I agree with Joe. Bowles is loved. Locking up Bowles was another smart Glazer/Licht move. Look how natural it is to Todd and the team is all about it. I’m liking it. The Darden talk better be real tho Coach because Jensen got some silky hands.

Love the team spirit in that clip! These guys are tight and hungry for another SB.

The inaudible f-bomb caught me off guard, because I swear Bowles’ demeanor is that of the no-nonsense deacon at church
