“He’s A Better Pass Catcher Than I Thought He Would Be”

June 9th, 2022

Running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn.

It’s hard to read between the lines when head coach Todd Bowles speaks because he’s a cautious communicator at news conferences.

So Joe’s ears always perk up when Bowles strays from clichés and shares an intriguing nugget, like when he said newcomer defensive tackle Akiem Hicks is expected to play a lot and perform to the high standard he did in Chicago.

After minicamp practice yesterday, Bowles was asked about third-year running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn. Bowles opened up a bit to say “he’s a better pass catcher than I thought he would be.” Bowles added that Vaughn is smart and he’s worked on his hands and route running with success this offseason.

So how much has Vaughn improved that he’s surprising Bowles, who has seen him for two years in practice?

Vaughn has only caught 11 out of 21 balls targeted to him in his career (regular season and playoffs).

It’s an interesting dynamic with Vaughn, Giovani Bernard and rookie Rachaad White (who had a bad drop yesterday) vying for the biggest role behind Leonard Fournette.

With Fournette likely to get very little preseason work, most of the running back answers will come in August.

Key will find his way when (if) he is given a chance I think.

    Nice problem to have.

  3. Bird Says:

He knew that was a weakness. Lets see how he does when he is about to get hit at full speed

Rb room could be interesting on who gets snaps

  4. Dman Says:

Lenny showed up to camp looking like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. The thanks the Bucs get for giving him the $$$ and contract. Would be nice if the younger guys step up.

  5. Guzzie Says:

Will we ever learn you don’t pay RBs big money second contracts, you draft an RB every other year in the mid rounds

  6. Eddie Marz Says:

Vaughan has proven he can play when used. Don’t know why the backfield is filled with running backs. No knock on Giovanni but I want RB who can catch and run. GOBUCS!

I like our RB situation better than last year.

Our Rookie White has excellent hands, and more speed then any of our current backs.
He has the potential to be a real game changer, when he is on the field.’

It’s going to be fun watching the battle for 2nd string.

IDK, its just awesome to me we’ve got competition going on all over the depth chart for back up roles, its a great problem to have.

Please give Key a chance. If all things are equal he should get the nod over White he’s waited long enough.
