DeCalon Brooks Trying To Be His Own Man

May 14th, 2022

Bucs tryout LB DeCalon Brooks.

The person Joe directed a question to Friday admitted the morning had been a bit wild for him. Despite being a rookie in a tryout role, this guy was very familiar with One Buc Palace.

You see, this guy’s last name is “Brooks.” You may have heard of his dad. Derrick Brooks?

DeCalon Brooks is a legacy at One Buc Palace. He got a tryout with the Bucs this weekend and for a change, people wanted to talk to him at One Buc Palace and not his dad.

“It holds something special to be back in this building,” DeCalon said.

The younger Brooks is a linebacker, too. And like his dad, he played at Florida State. Getting a tryout is where the similarities ended.

DeCalon Brooks had no desire to pull his dad’s retired number out of mothballs. One reason is the younger Brooks considers that number sacred.

“No, not at all,” DeCalon said to Joe when Joe asked if he discussed wearing 55 with his dad this week. “Really, even if I had the option to wear 55, I probably wouldn’t because I want to make my own footsteps.

“That number is special and it belongs to my dad and his legacy.”

DeCalon admitted he got strange flashbacks when he began to put on a Bucs practice uniform yesterday.

“That helmet was by my side and it had ‘BROOKS’ on the front. I was like, ‘Dang.’”

Who knows if DeCalon will get signed by the Bucs to participate in underwear football or training camp? The Gaither High grad tried out with Washington last week so he has options.

But it is wild to Joe that the son of a Bucs icon whose jersey Joe owns is now also wearing pewter and red.

FSU has been horrible the last couple years so I haven’t paid attention but what kind of player is he?

3 star recruit was a star at Gaither. Smart instinctive player. Started out great at FSU but not so great his last two. He ran in the mid 4.7s forty at his pro day.

TBBF already knew he was older than dirt….but this backed it up…..

Even though he’s got the DB55 genes…..it will be an uphill climb for the kid.

If it’s true the young man is 5’10 220lbs trying to play linebacker, I hope he’s lightning fast because he’s got a mountain to climb but I wish him luck
