“Crazy Smart” Todd Bowles

May 4th, 2022

Bucs head coach Todd Bowles

It always makes Joe take pause when a Buccaneer is asked about losing Bucco Bruce Arians and doesn’t say anything about the guy.

Feels odd every time.

All-Pro right tackle Tristan Wirfs was in that boat this morning on NFL Network. He joined Good Morning Football and was asked about the transition of power from Arians to Todd Bowles.

Twice Wirfs called Bowles “crazy smart.” And he interestingly noted that older players have told him that it’s better to have a defensive-minded head coach in training camp. Joe presumes that’s because the coach won’t ride the offense as hard, and it was offensive players that gave Wirfs that heads-up.

Asked about offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich having more of a command this season, Wirfs said, “We all trust him with our lives.”

Wirfs was brought on the show, in part, to pump the announcement of the Bucs playing “host” to the first ever NFL game in Germany. Tampa Bay faces Seattle on Nov. 13.

I just don’t feel good about our general direction

  2. Cleanhouse Says:

Glad we have Brady for one more season, for those offensive players who sound excited to loaf through practice.

  3. Brandon Says:

Cleanhouse…. sounds like a typical troll to me. You not feeling good about the direction is more indicative of your roll as a troll. Our direction is great… unfortunately for you.

  4. Todd Says:

We need to clean house of Cleanhouse. Embarrassingly Eeyoreian.

  5. ben Says:

Cleanhouse.. i agree , Brady will make the offensive work hard

  6. Its a Bucs Life Says:

Bowles is so “Crazy Smart” that everyone in RJS knew the Rams were gonna throw to Kupp yet, Bowles had zero answer for that…

Sucks that we as an organization and fanbase have to settle for Bowles while other teams got their pick of the best candidates

Dude was gifted a job that should’ve been given to the best candidate not just Bruce’s friend

  7. Its a Bucs Life Says:

Joe is so clueless as to why no one is singing Arians praises, WAKE UP JOE!!!!!!

For a couple of guys that read into every little Bucs nugget out there you guys are clueless about Arians.

  8. Listnfrmafar Says:

I don’t see anything wrong with Cleanhouse’s post. I guess it is indicative to the norm today, don’t go against the narrative your opinion means nothing. Bowles is still unproven as a winning HC so I’m a little leary to. It’s obvious that BA was the invisible man so somebody had to be steering the ship, unfortunately for Bucs fans know one knows who. If it were Brady, the future after 2023 is bleak. I really hope Bowles kills it this season. As far as the Germany game, the NFL could pick a better rival than Seattle?

  9. Its a Bucs Life Says:

Arians openly admitted he never attended offensive meetings

At training camp he was on his golf cart more than he was coaching up players

Bucs got the semi retired Arians not the No Risk It No Biscuit Playcaller who turned the Cards around

Let’s be real the Coordinators and Brady ran this team, not Arians. he was just along for the ride and enjoying a nice paycheck for it.

  10. Crickett Baker Says:

I feel the same way, Joe, and it seems very noticeable. The only thing I can think of is that they all are putting the past behind them and truly just looking at the future (and the present) so I guess it’s a good thing.

  11. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

Crazy smart until he made that call that left Cooper Kupp wide open

  12. GOB Says:

Joe, I think BAs style and personality wore on the whole team last year. That’s the reason players aren’t unhappy with the change. You would assume with a detailed and meticulous coach like bowles, that practices will be more productive and beneficial. You’d also expect more accountability. I believe these things were sorely lacking last year. Not that they don’t like BA. But, it was time for a change, and I think the players welcome it.

  13. firethecannons Says:

Its a Buc Life has a good point I feel the same way it seems really shady for Bowles to get gifted the job and at same time–how can anyone say he is smart after that the last play vs Rams–should of had an answer for that and does he have any answer for us vs the saints and rams this year? he will get credit for a genius superbowl vs chiefs and he obviously was able to get defense on board for that plan Our offens will need to stay healthy as we need to outscore every opponent to win also does Bowles have a better plan for devin white? last year was hard to watch sometimes as he was a complete nonfactor we need better linebacker depth have a premonition

  14. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

You all keep beating the same stupid drum! If the players had kept Kupp from going out of bounds the play before when the Rams had, now read this
    N O T I M E O U T S
    N O T I M E O U T S
    N O T I M E O U T S !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is what caused that field goal because if the PLAYERS had DONE THEIR JOBS like they’re are paid to do then the Rams never have a chance to kick the field goal because the clock would’ve ran out even with that big play. Bowles was forced to make that call and Devin White didn’t get the players in the proper positions that’s why there was confusion before the snap! All these man cave coaches talking what people know yet don’t know anything about the defensive 1 minute drill, KEEP ALL PLAYS IN BOUNDS!!!!! When are you dudes going to get a clue or some decent football common sense??? Stop with your agenda driven rants!

  15. #8 Says:

I think that morning cup of Joe has folks very salty today.

  16. Bojim Says:

I hope Bowles is head coach smart.

  17. Dooley Says:

    @DavidBigBucFan99

yes, yes, and you’re absolutely right

  18. GOB Says:

@DavidBigBucsFan99 The defensive gameplan was terribly flawed from the first snap. If we can’t agree on that, then what the hell are we arguing about. Stafford historically struggles when asked to throw against 7 or more defenders. The bucs blitzes were easy to pick up. The Rams looked like they could see them coming. Very few if any in game adjustment was made. The only reason it was a game was the Rams inability to hold onto the football. It wasn’t due to any great defensive plays. We can only help bowles learned from it. The players shoulder blame also. But, they were not putting a position to succeed.

  19. GOB Says:

    Hope

  20. GOB Says:

Put in. God damnit, auto correct is perhaps the worst thing ever invented

  21. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Agree DavidBigBuc 100 %!! these guys get paid big bucks, no excuse’s ! it’s on the players…..

  22. Dooley Says:

@GOB youre missing the fact that the more than 1 player admitted to screwing up the call in post game pressers. Dave, like alot of us are tired of reading fans of this team beat that horse to oblivion. Also, the only thing worse than losing, is being in the midst of a sore loser and usually that’s because they dont fully understand how the loss came about in order to correct it in the future. It’s an exhausted talking point and the further it goes on the facts are being replaced with opinions and feelings that dont amount to the bigger picture. And taking credit away from the defense getting us back into the Rams game, is weak bro

  23. DBS Says:

But another coach speaks from his man cave. Of course he is right and everyone else is wrong.

  24. Listnfrmafar Says:

Davidbigfool@ who do you think puts the personal in place? Bunting covering Kupp? Really? The defense should of been in sideline pass prevent D, NOT a blitz package. The players DON’T make that call. It was ALL Bowles and BA!

  25. 1sparkybuc Says:

If the defense had been where they were supposed to be, and ready at the snap, Stafford would not have had time to make the throw. That’s on the players. It’s over and done. New season. New coach. New players. It’s time to move on. The Rams did what they had to do to win the game. I believe the Bucs will be the better team when we meet them again.

  26. Listnfrmafar Says:

Sparky Rams ran a quick snap, confusion is on coaches, these guys are pros I think they know how to blitz. Riddle me this, why was VEA coming from the outside on the rush? Last I checked he ain’t running no 4 second 40. Bowles silence on this speaks volumes. Someone needs to ask him how was the movie?

  27. Cleanhouse Says:

Why am I a troll? I think Suh and JPP are the heart of our D and they are being pushed aside like afterthoughts. I understand cap space issues but I think our front office is being pompous. It reminds me of when they exited Sapp, Lynch and Brooks too early. You’re telling me JPP is not as valuable as these other no name scrubs? Come on!!! I’d take a motivated JPP in decline any day over half the “important” pieces and backups on our roster. Replace 3 or 4 of these backups and make it happen! Suh brings the wisdom and experience of our D! Both of these players are one of one- irreplaceable and invaluable for their intangibles- real players. I’ll take it all day over potential- Now is not the time for potential! WE HAVE TOM FREAKIN BRADY!!!!!
Who stepped up when it counted with big plays?? Suh and JPP!! This pompous front office is about to revert to the clown show it always was and soon enough my screen name will be relevant again!! Mark my words…. And of course I hope I’m wrong because I’m a true fan since 86. Go Bucs!

  28. GOB Says:

Listnfrmafar is correct. @Dooley, if you’re giving the bucs defensive credit for the Rams literally laying the ball on the ground, then you watched a different game friend. Without those completely inexplicable fumbles, the bucs would’ve been run out the joint.

  29. Its a Bucs Life Says:

    1sparkybuc-

Based on what? In the last 4 Bucs v Rams games we are 1-3. McVay just owns Bowles and his scheme. In each game we’ve given up over 400 yards of offense to the Rams and have lost the time of possession in 3 of the 4 games.

Bucs v Rams last 4 Matchups
    2019 Allowed 40 Points & 518 total yards
    2020 Allowed 27 Points & 413 total yards
    2021 Allowed 34 Points & 407 total yards
    Allowed 30 Points & 428 total yards

Bowles is basically doing the same exact thing and expecting different results. This is why this hire should worry fans, we didn’t hire the best candidate, we hired the best candidate on staff. We let a semi retired, checked out BA pick our next coach from a list of his friends.

The only way the Bucs beat the Rams with McVay calling plays is if we simply out score them or they have a high number of injuries

  30. GOB Says:

Listnfrmafar, they did get quick snapped, clear to see. The entire defense looked completely confused. That doesn’t happen

  31. Its a Bucs Life Says:

Without Rams turn overs Bowles defense never stopped them. Proving yet again giving this guy a promotion for being Arians friend is a bad move. If he was given the job after the Super Bowl you can understand it, but after how bad his defense looked in the last game he has a ways to go to make me a believer

  32. GOB Says:

It’s a bucs life, well said

  33. Listnfrmafar Says:

Great post Bucslife@ prior to becoming a Buc, I don’t believe Brady ever lost to the Rams so blaming him doesn’t hold water.

  34. BUCman Says:

Bowles will succeed this year because he was gifted a readymade Superbowl team with Tom Brady at QB and was able to take over with virtually no changes within the organization. I have real concern about him as a Head Coach long term. Just because your successful as a coordinator doesn’t make you Head Coach material. A great example of this is Norv Turner. Hope I’m wrong but I don’t have a good feeling about Bowles as Head Coach post Brady, Gronk, Arians, and Leftwich who will all be leaving the organization after this year. Everything will be fully on his shoulders at that point.

  35. Listnfrmafar Says:

He can’t be worse than BA, anyone full-time is an improvement.

  36. GOB Says:

BlahahHa, listnfrmafar I’ll take a full time HC, as opposed to a dude more worried about his tee time.

  37. Jor God tha Binks Says:

“We all trust him w/ our lives” 🤯 anybody else get goosebumps from that simply put, but deep statement?!

Did the Joe(s) take an extra awesome pill this morning 😂 jkjk….you guys are on point today w/ everything

I’ve never been happier to be a JBF fan

  38. ClwJB Says:

The Bowles scheme is just as risky as BA – blitz and create TO’s, stop the run

Anddddd give up 30 completions for 350 yds and 3 tds getting picked apart slowly with slow corners that are marginal tacklers in off coverage – the off coverage 18 yard completion to the backside of the blitz 13 times a game is just awful.

    Yeah, kind of scared too

  39. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Bucman please, where do you think most had coaches come from? Off the streets? Most are former coordinators so that is a tired excuse. Bowles crafted one of the best playoff defenses we’ve witnessed since “02 AND terrorized Patricia Mahomies into oblivion to bring us a Lombardi Trophy! Plus last year the plethora of injuries he had to deal with but yet rarely have up the booty and was able to keep us in most of the losses even when the offense was struggling. Being he was on this team how is it that he hasn’t earned to run this team as he knows all the players well now? What more must the man do to earn the job instead of ? Hope some of you who have have a problem with him being our coach get stonewalled for your next promotion or raise that you feel you earned because your reasons are less than credible

  40. Listnfrmafar Says:

David, would you rather have McVay, Belichick, Reid, Harbaugh, McDaniels, Tomlin, Carrol, Payton, Flores, Campbell, Shanahan or Bowles? I know my answer.

  41. Listnfrmafar Says:

Sorry Rivera and McDermott also, I am sure there are more.

  42. Buccos Says:

Last season was the Rams year. They were the best team at the seasons end. We had too many injuries to overcome. Did Bowles blow that call? Yes he did. But you can’t overlook what he brings to the program. He is a defensive genius apparently but even geniuses are wrong once in a while. That’s ok because we are going to win it all this year because of our roster, especially number 12.

  43. Miller5252 Says:

Everyone wants to talk about that last play from the Rams. I would rather talk about the whoopin they put on the Bucs the first 3 quarters. It was another game for the Bucs where they didn’t show up to play. The biggest coaching staff in the NFL and multiple times, too many to count, they weren’t ready to play. If they don’t learn how to fix that, it won’t matter what the last play was because they ain’t going to beat any good teams.

  44. Goatfarmer Says:

Listophrenic – just stop with your hate, man.

You can have your own personal reality and believe yourself that coaching had nothing to do with the SB run or last years best Reg season record ever. And when the Bucs succeed again you’ll say the same thing.

Man you should apply at OBP. Jason Licht obviously must be a naive dunce to not see all of this that you do.

Did Arians beat you up or make fun of you at some point? Holy cow.

  45. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Listn please stop it, that right there is a moot point. Tell me which of those coaches aren’t coaching right now. Who is available??? The fact that you ignore that Bowles scrapped together a Super Bowl defense that helped give us a title shows you have a personal reason you don’t want him as our coach. Outside of Bellicheck and Morris show me which of those coaches have more titles than he has. I love how people always throw in Billichecks name in the mix but he wasn’t Jack until someone by the name of Brady joined his team.

  46. Infomeplease Says:

Let’s have a discussion about Todd Bowles in February!!! How great he did or what he could do to get better!! It’s not fair to play judge and jury before hand!!! Give the man a chance to produce or not!!

As far as that last game with LA goes.. he called the plays! The last LA possession… He called the plays… Lack of execution by the players!! Some admitting to not knowing the 0 blitz call!!!!

  47. Eddie Marz Says:

I fully expect The Bucs to win at least 13 games this year. Hopefully more and get that extra week off. They didn’t need that week two years ago, but last year it would have helped with all the injuries they had. This team can STILL win it all. GOBUCS!
