“Are We Going To Have To Go Make A Trade For Jimmy Or Baker Or Someone Like This?”

May 12th, 2022

Dealing with retirement distractions.

Fascinating insight from a man who has a pipeline into the inner workings of One Buc Palace. And that man is closet Bucs fan Peter Schrager of NFL Network.

Yesterday morning, Bucs chatter filled up the lead block of “Good Morning Football” led by the news that Tom Brady got over a third of a billion dollars to be the face of FOX Sports’ NFL broadcasts and likely other high-profile FOX projects.

(The “lead block” is the first segment of a show’s programming until the first commercial break.)

There, Schrager talked about how Brady’s future job may or may not distract the Bucs in what sure looks like Brady’s final season. Schrager also pointed out how, in the words of JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman, the Bucs were “peering into the abyss” two months ago with the prospect of losing several top-shelf free agents and turning to Blaine Gabbert as the signal-caller.

(Bucs quarterback coach Clyde Christensen sort of confirmed this week the team was resigned to the notion that Gabbert would be the starting quarterback until Brady had his rapture.)

“I think it is all milk and honey for the Bucs right now,” Schrager said. “They didn’t think Brady was coming back. So they were looking at Kyle Trask and some [others]. This is all to them, hey, just icing on the cake. The question is, how is this going to affect Brady?

“Every single moment there is this hovering thing of, ‘Alright, this is finite. Brady is going to be going up there [broadcast booth] at some point.’ Can he and those guys block it out? To me, from the Buccaneers’ side of it, they were looking at Kyle Trask a couple of months ago and they were like, ‘Uh, I dunno, are we going to have to go make a trade for Jimmy or Baker or someone like this?’ This is all gold for them.”

Schrager makes an interesting point. All season long the theme of each game will be, “This the final time Tom Brady… ” and you can insert what that may be. All season long. Every week.

And this chatter will only get louder as the season marches on and the Bucs enter the playoffs. Can the Bucs block it out?

Brady has proven time and time again he knows how to shut out the noise. For example, how can you get a bigger distraction than playing a home game in the Super Bowl? Did Brady or the Bucs play like their heads were somewhere else that night?

One snap from looking back into the abyss

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We didn’t trade for them now…..and probably won’t in the future…….

Since Brady decided to come back all we’ve heard is “all-in” for 2022…..and now, I’ve been conditioned to just that…

I don’t put much of a thought at all into 2023…..

Damn Joe, I don’t typically complain about the editing. You’ve got better things to do than check for apostrophes and spelling. But this one is pretty bad:

“Brady is givng to be going up there [broadcast booth] at some point.’ Can he and those guys Are the Buccaneers block is out?”

Or perhaps Schrager was just having diarrhea of the mouth that day.

    Suh. (I am manifesting it!)

  5. Allbuccedup Says:

Peter Schrager is the same idiot that said the Chiefs were going to beat the Bucs bad in the superbowl and the game would not be close.

  6. Buc92’ Says:

Deshaun was definitely gonna be a buc had Brady not came back , in fact that’s what made him make the decision at the time … we’ll be trading for a vet or mortgaging the future to trade up in the draft for a top prospect… unfortunately they fumbled the entire Trask situation & shouldn’t have been drafted smh

    GoBucs!

  7. Marine Buc Says:

The Bucs will be paying TB12 @ $35M not to play QB next year.

I doubt we will be paying our starting QB much in 2023…

I’m sure there will be a boost of @ $20-$25M to the NFL salary caps but the Bucs are going all in this season and there really isn’t many contracts to renegotiate next off season unlike the Saints who were able to clear a $76M negative balance because they had @ 10 different contracts to restructure.

  8. SlyPirate Says:

THE POINT IS … enjoy the Bonus Season

    -Celebrate every win
    -Plan your playoff parties
    -Buy your NFCS Champ shirts
-Talk trash to every other NFCS fan ALL YEAR LONG

Get it all in because life post-TB12 isn’t going to be the same.

  9. SufferingSince76 Says:

Let’s get through this season with Brady before we start depressing about what next year may bring.

  10. Bucs92 Says:

@Bucs92 Deshaun was never coming to the Bucs. The Glazers weren’t having none of it. It was never about weapons with Deshaun, he wanted big money. No way the Bucs would have given him the contract he has with the Browns. Some on this board are slobbering over the possibility of Baker. Baker has zero credibility. He will walk into a locker room of guys who are skeptical of his leadership. The standard has already been set. This guy is not good for the culture of this team

  11. GOB Says:

As you folks have witnessed, without a top 10-12 QB, it really doesn’t matter how good the roster is. Like you guys, the browns had a Superbowl roster. The only thing missing was the QB. You can’t win in this league without one. I think it’s pretty evident that the bucs carriage will turn back into a pumpkin, once Brady leaves.

allbuccedup – are your feelings hurt or something. Peter Sharage isnt exactly the only analyst that predicted a Chiefs win, and there wasnt exactly imperical data to support the notion that Tampa was going to trounce them. In the prediction business, people occasionally get things wrong, educated guesses can be wrong. Boo Hoo, but you and people like you that take it soooo personally are just…you guys are something. Whats your address? I want to instacart you some tampons

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

All we need is for a$$wipe “fans” to rain on our parade all year…..talking about next year.

  14. Marine Buc Says:

I have an idea… Let’s all be delusional and call people names.

That would make us all feel like “real men”…

    HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

    So sad.

  16. steele Says:

They will still have to address QB, no matter what Brady does or does not do. It takes time for any rookie to develop. It doesn’t sound like “slow” Trask is the next coming.

  17. GOB Says:

Hey @ Colonel Angus, “You can’t just turn it off like some, some damn radio. We gotta be in the middle of the action, because we’re warriors. And without some challenge, some war to be fought. Then the warriors may as well be dead stallion. I’m asking you as a friend. Stand by my side this one last time”

Have you seen Stallone’s cut? The interaction between Apollo and Rocky is much longer, and more nuanced. GOBs favorite 80s movie of all time

  18. Buc92’ Says:

The glazers hired Antonio Brown , Deshaun was headed here Bruce & Jason all but said it … & no he wouldn’t have gotten that contract as it wasn’t his demand … the browns did that to lure him away from Atlanta… we wouldn’t have had to do that to get him here . We were option 1 thanks

    GoBucs!

  19. sasquatch Says:

    D. Watson was not headed here. There is no way they could have fit that gigantic contract. Plus, he’s a sh!tbag. They may have inquired, but they weren’t ever going to pay that gigantic price. Believe me, CLE is going to regret that trade.

  20. stpetebucsfan Says:

After this year’s dismal year next season’s crop of College QB’s is supposed to be dramatically better with as many as five first round picks.

In any given game this season I think Gabbert gives us a better chance than Trask based on his many years of experience. But if Trask is not the future it’s time to find out and move on.

It seems to me if TB12 goes down for the season or an extended period of time our odds lengthen dramatically. IE No backup QB is going to save Brady’s bacon if he gets injured. So why not roll with Trask to see what the Bucs have?
