Larry Fitzgerald Nearly Signed With Bucs

April 6th, 2022

Almost.

The Bucs just about signed a future Hall of Fame receiver last year to join another future Hall of Fame receiver, Mike Evans.

But that didn’t happen because the future Hall of Fame receiver in question was out of shape.

That’s the word from Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic after monitoring an appearance by former Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach and current front office suit Bucco Bruce Arians on Phoenix radio station 98.7-FM.

In the interview, Arians admitted he called former Cardinals great Larry Fitzgerald to see if he would come to the Bucs after Chris Godwin blew out a knee against the slimy Saints.

But Fitz told Arians he couldn’t hack it. Per McManaman, Fitz told him he “couldn’t run two plays right now” if he tried, and offered a “thanks but no thanks.

Man, even if Fitz could have been 80 percent, imagine how that would have loosened up coverage for Evans? Man, what could have been.

Larry Fitzgerald & TBBF have at least one thing in common: We both couldn’t run two plays.

I suppose the real reason is that he didn’t want to play for that awful coach, Bruce Arians. (sarcasm)

He couldn’t run 2 plays. So, shut the front door. No reason to dream about an 80% Fitz.

Yeah, I mean what if Randy Moss could still play? Maybe Jerry Rice too… Oh wow! It almost happened because somebody thought about it! Let’s think about what could have been… 🙄🙄🙄

Bucs just signed S Keanu Neal.

Heck, I read that Terrell Owens is making a comeback, at age 48.
I will never forget when Terrell was a 49er, and they were playing the Cowboys in Dallas. Terrell ran out to the Cowboy Logo in the middle of the field, and put his arms straight out, in disrespect.
Finally, it was Emmitt Smith who ran out from the Cowboys bench, and knocked Terrell off the Logo!

Nearly signed seams like a TMZ headline. Sounds more like it was a 1 minute phone call where fitz told coach he is in no shape to play. Coach said had to ask. That’s not nearly it is coach called an old vet and was told not a chance. So the headline should be. If Fitzgerald was in shape he would have been a buc last year

    Maybe Steve Largent is available.

  8. David Says:

I saw someone talking to Fitzgerald during Super Bowl week wondering if he was going to play again and his response “no chance, I have nothing left I’m not in shape for it”

    One of the all-time greats.

That would have been sweet. I’m loving where we are now, but I’m used to a whole lot of “what could have beens”. If we had a slightly less greedy, somewhat competent owner back in the day and a half decent coach, we could have had Steve Young and Bo Jackson in the backfield at the same time! The good times now almost make me forget our mostly sordid past. Almost.

So you became just another a couch potato, over-the hill-Fitzgerald, like the rest of us. You might have helped us win a SB had you something left in the tank. But he was never a Buc. So who cares?

Honestly, his biggest impact would have been as a blocker… we have guys that can catch. But none can block in the slot like Godwin and Fitzgerald.

He was honest. Props to him.
