“I Would Love To See Him Go To Tampa”

April 26th, 2022

Gerald McCoy talks Bucs draft.

One of the great Buccaneers of all-time is also one of the biggest Bucs fans out there.

Six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was a Bucs fan growing up and then landed with his team out of college in 2010. Even after departing the Bucs following the 2018 season, McCoy made it clear he would always love Tampa Bay and that wouldn’t change as he joined the Panthers.

Well, McCoy still loves the Bucs, pleaded on SiriusXM NFL Radio for general manager Jason Licht to go draft Oklahoma defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey.

Winfrey is projected as a late-second-round or third-round pick. McCoy is a big Oklahoma fan, but more important, McCoy said he attended a Sooners practice in November and he watched Winfrey be the best player on the field, and the most hungry player. McCoy adds that Winfrey is incredibly physical and has great get-off, which is the kind of combination McCoy says can’t be taught.

“I would love for the Bucs to go get him. They need some interior help.” McCoy said a few times. “I would love to see him go to Tampa. You need players like him. Is he going to be a Day 1 starter? I don’t know.”

McCoy went on to call Winfrey “a glue guy” with “contagious energy,” and that it was on display a the Senior Bowl as well as at Oklahoma practice. “That’s just who he is,” McCoy added.

At 6-4, 290 pounds, Winfrey has true athleticism and pass rush ability, so he certainly should be on the Bucs’ radar late in Round 2 — if they don’t draft McCoy’s top D-tackle in Round 1.

No doubt on the Bucs radar, unless there’s some red flags we’re not aware of.

Make the reunion happen Tampa #GoBucs

  3. DoooshLaRue Says:

Just stop with the feel good Softie93 BS.
That sorry azz ship has sailed.

  4. DoosLaRue Big Brother Says:

Don’t mind my little brother he’s mad cuz McCoy ignored him for an autograph signing when McCoy had his pro bowl season

  5. Bojim Says:

    McCoy was a great DT.

  6. JD Says:

I understand a tiny portion of the hate GMC had while playing but he has done so much for us throughout the years. Give the man some respect lol

  7. BigMacAttack Says:

Gerald should get an intern job and work his way into coaching. He’s a good guy and loves the game. I’d like to see him back in Tampa on Bowles’ staff. If he’s still a Buc fan you know he reads JBF daily. I’m sure he can’t get enough.

  8. WB Says:

1000% agree. Perrion in the 2nd. Right after Bernhard Raimann at 27.

  9. SB~LV Says:

Can’t help but to like McCoy … very very good NFL player on a run of bad Buc teams.

    ……………..

LOLOL you win comment of the day for sure Sir!
Stop being a bitter Ass Doosh.

  11. Craig Says:

If a hunk of prime, cornfed O-line ( like Wirfs< falls to the Bucs in the first round, then go for him.

D-line guys are notoriously worthless in their rookie years, so he bulk up for a year and be ready next season

  12. Thadeus Says:

With Suh and JPP hopefully gone, we could use him.

  13. Goatfarmer Says:

    Hey Geraldine – STFU

  14. SlyPirate Says:

GMC would make a good Barney the Dinosaur. Big lovable softy.

Betting Perrion falls to the 3rd or 4th. DTs and OG with “2nd round grades” always fall. WR, RBs, S, LB get drafted in the 2nd.

  15. Goatfarmer Says:

For opinions on Geraldine I listen to Sapp or Beckles. Foolish I know. What would those guys know about good line play?

  16. steele Says:

Winfrey projects as a rd 3. Had a great Senior Bowl, but inconsistent prior to that.
I’d like to see DeMarvin Leal (rd 2-3) for pass rush. Travis Jones (2-3) Phidarian Mathis (3-5), John Ridgeway (3-5), all project in the same part of the board.

  17. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

    Really?

The guy is not even allowed to share what he hopes to happen in TB… a place he played for 9 years… without getting some of these hate blasts?

That is pathetic and not deserved.

  18. Evo Says:

I cringe when you call him one of the greatest bucs of all time. No he’s not. Stop that. Call him one of the most well known well liked bucs for sure. But one of the greatest. No! Being a decent player on bad teams doesn’t make you great. Just makes you recognized.

  19. Allbuccedup Says:

Winfrey had some off field issues partying too much and taking breaks in between plays. Wyatt has an arrest record. Leal, Jones and Mathis are the best choices and maybe Logan Hall.

  20. Dlavid Says:

Geraldine is a grifter …. No real Buc fan cares to hear his thoughts …. He never measured up to the billing ! Suh has given the Bucs what they wanted from McCoy but never got!

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t think Gerald McCoy is one of the best of all time…but certainly he was the best for a few years.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Dlavid Says
Geraldine is a grifter …. No real Buc fan cares to hear his thoughts …. He never measured up to the billing ! Suh has given the Bucs what they wanted from McCoy but never got!

To be fair, Suh was surrounded by top talent at just about every spot. McCoy was a man alone.

  23. firethecannons Says:

yeah later round pick do not waste a first–for gods sake trade down if possible

  24. Rod Munch Says:

GRRRR!!!!!! I HATE MCCOY SO MUCH!!!! GRRRRR!!!! HE LIKES ICE CREAM!!!!! GRRRRR!!!!! AND BATMAN!!!!! GRRR!!!!! IM SO ANGRY!!!!! GRRRRR!!!!!

  25. Allbuccedup Says:

The Bucs picked McCoy at #3 because Suh was the #2 pick the Bucs wanted Suh.

  26. SB Says:

    ^^^^^ Bunch of losers.

  27. SB Says:

    @Rod.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

I don’t know much about Perrion Winfrey, but watching some highlights, he looks, physically, like a 1970-1980s defensive lineman — almost, dare I say it, like Lee Roy Selmon. I’m not talking about his play style or anything, just physically, he looks like someone that would look awesome in the creamsicles.

  29. DoooshLaRue Says:

Why doesn’t he just go “back home” to the Panthers?
Dude is a straight up BSer with a quick first step to nowhere.

    He done.
    He been done.

  30. BringBucsBack Says:

    “I’m HOME!!!”

    -G. McCoy
(The very instant he arrived at Carolina, while flying like a jet at their stadium; remember?)

  31. Rod Munch Says:

GRRRRR!!!!! HE CALLED ANOTHER PLACE HIS HOME ONCE!!!!! GRRRRR!!!! THAT MAKES ME SO ANGRY!!!!! I CAN ONLY AFFORD ONE HOME, AND HE HAS MULTIPLE HOMES!!!!! AND A BATMAN STATUE!!!! GRRRRR!!!!! HE’S SOFT LIKE ICE CREAM, NOT HARD LIKE ME!!!!! GRRRRR!!!!!

  32. Esteban85 Says:

Loved McCoy when he was here. He was on some terrible teams. I sure wanted Suh in the draft. You don’t want the line to be winning any nice guy awards. You want the whole league to fear them the way they fear Suh. GMC was just too nice.

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Wouldn’t it be a surprise if the Bucs took Kenny Pickett, QB?

He’s ranked 24th of the top 150 players. It is very possible.

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

McCoy played well in the beginning, but the Bucs surrounded him with losers and the fans expected him to force the team to win.

Even Suh could not succeed with that recipe.

  35. Esteban85 Says:

Please oh please trade back and draft Travis Jones!!

  36. TheBradyBunch Says:

Suh has been solid here, but the big knock on McCoy was his sack numbers which are quite a bit better than Suh’s numbers. You guys just wanted him to be an a-hole. If he had ever stomped on a QB’s hand you would all love him.

  37. BigMacAttack Says:

GMC just couldn’t or wouldn’t build his upper body. He was soft and weak for lineman. His legacy is torn biceps which were almost too small to tear. But he had a big azz and thunderous thighs. If he could have matched that on top he would have been an all time great. I like him but he just didn’t put in the work that the great players do.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

BigMacAttack, with all due respect, that’s malarky, lol.

  39. Just Saying Says:

Is it possible that it was McCoy’s soft fun is more important than wins leadership that influenced the check collecting losing ways of the lost decade? Winners with real leadership qualities wouldn’t allow dancing good time sideline exhibitions while the team is getting their butts kicked. He is the most overrated player in Bucs history without any close second.

  40. Tim R. Says:

Please don’t select a quarterback. No one in the draft is better than Trask.

  41. Rod Munch Says:

Just Saying — yeah, a DT by being HARD, GRRRRRR, like YOU, that’s would have made Ryan Smith and Chris Conte ALLPROS!

    Moron.

  42. SB Says:

    ^^^^^LOL

  43. DoooshLaRue Says:

Some flames still burn hot huh Munch?
I do admire how you always defend your man with such fervent zest.
Did he let you use his kimono to wipe yourself off after he finished?

  44. Bucs Win Says:

I see the McCrybaby apologists are still alive and unwell, I’m really going to trigger the goobers now, Mike Glennon sucks.

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

@ Bucs Win, just stating the facts. McCoy was great at getting sacks the first 5 years once he started playing. Had there been 2-3 other good dLine players, he likely would be considered better than Suh overall.

And so far as being too nice?

Leeroy used to help opposing players up after the whistle blew…and he was EXTREMELY good…possibly the best player outside of Brady the bucs have ever had.

  46. Bruce Blahak Says:

McCoy lol…the original burst and disappear player wants us to draft his clone. They’ll never be a Selmon.

  47. RustyRhinos Says:

Any thought or care of words (or advice) from this Former Buc DT I lost, when he found his “home” in Carolina and then Dallas.
Any and All ROH arguments for this Former DT should be considered for another worthy ROH non member like Buc RB James Wilder. With his still #1 leading Buccaneer in rushing with 5,957 yards. Any records at all for the Former Buc DT? A 3rd in sacks in 9 seasons, nice. Yet it is still not #1 is it. His 55 is 22 less than Sapp’s 77 and 15 less than Rice’s 69.5.
James Wilder for ROH!!! #1 in Rushing Attempts, #9 in Receiving yards, #2 in receptions behind only Mike Evans, 90 receptions ahead of Godwin. #2 in rushing TD behind Alstott. All, Ring Of Honor worthy! Former DT?? One #3. I appreciate your time played here, and your fifty five sacks. I just don’t see it as ROH worthy, yet. Not when there is others more qualified. Wilder #32 for ROH!!

    Go!!!! Bucs!!!!!

  48. DoooshLaRue Says:

Agree RR, but some real geniuses on here just love old “ah shucks” Gummy93.
He was one of the main reasons for the list decade defensively.
