Chris Godwin Rumor Should Mean Targeting Jahan Dotson

April 20th, 2022

Not a reach for Bucs to select Penn State WR Jahan Dotson.

Joe almost had a stroke the other day when he heard former Bucs defensive tackle and current ESPN personality Booger McFarland say on local radio that Bucs fans shouldn’t expect Chris Godwin back until after Thanksgiving.

WTH???

This made Joe want Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to draft Penn State speedy wide receiver Jahan Dotson all the more. With the pair of glue hands he has along with his speed, the Bucs could sure use him until Godwin gets back from rehabbing his surgically-repaired knee.

The nerds behind SIS in their draft preview believe Dotson is the fifth-best wide receiver available. Ben Hrkach breaks down Dotson.

Overall, Dotson projects best as a No. 2 WR in a pass-happy spread offense. He has the skills to play on the outside against less physical opponents and will be a constant winner in the slot on third downs, capable of breaking either direction or over the top. Dotson can also be used as a chess piece and gadget player in a creative offense. Dotson has had success as a punt returner in college and should be a good one from Day 1 at the next level.

Punt returner. Gee, Joe wonders what highly-ranked NFL team could use a new one?

Speed kills, and you combine that with a great pair of hands and you are cooking with gas. Using Dotson as a tailback on some funky offensive plays to add serious speed to the backfield would be cool to mix things up at times.

The Bucs did that a once or twice with Scotty Miller. They could do it a lot more with Dotson. Oh yeah, and just have Tom Brady launch passes and let Dotson chase them down.

A team can never have too much speed!

  2. Mort Says:

What Anthony said isnā€™t a ā€œRumorā€. Itā€™s speculation. Conjecture. Nobody knows when Chris will be back.

And you donā€™t draft the fifth best at a position that isnā€™t a need – and is pretty deep in the draft- with your first round pick.

    What?
    Common Core math ?
    Does not add up
Simply because you donā€™t give up that much cap space to a questionable roster spot.
I sniff draft day schomke chumming for teams to trade into the 27th

  4. uhmmm Says:

The Bucs have great depth at WR. Probably the best in the NFL. Please stop the draft a WR in the first 2 rounds nonsense

  5. Steven007 Says:

First off, how is it that Booger has this inside information that has not been reported anywhere else? And even if it’s true, what team worth it salt uses their first pick, a potential 5-year contract, on a player simply due to the possibility of having a starter out for a couple of months?! Yeah, I know, we’re all in, blah blah. But seriously. To make a choice because the starter is out for a while is ludicrous. And that seems to be what you’re suggesting. Because once the starter is back in full effect, this rookie will not be the first, second, or even third receiving option if our corps stays healthy. To pass on a greater need like either of the lines or cornerback for the reason stated here would be ridiculous.

  6. Stanglassman Says:

Since most mocks have him going to the Titians at 26 itā€™s definitely not a reach. His ADP is 30 but actual number is 26. I do not like picking right after the Titians. If anyone has a bead on what Jason is wanting is Jon Robinson. Last time was ā€˜17 and they took Adoree’ Jackson (my fav) and we settled for OJ. I really think the Bucs would have grabbed Jackson.

  7. RioDeJaneiroBucsFan Says:

    1) CG will be back sooner
    2) Smart draft strategy = best player available
    3) When in doubt, build the trenches

  8. Marine Buc Says:

This is what I was afraid of. All you people saying “we have plenty of receivers” are not correct IMO.

If Godwin is out we have Evans and Gage. After that we have injury prone Perriman, Miller and Grayson.

Then we have Johnson and Darden who probably should be playing for the USFL…

I would be fine with drafting another WR in rounds 1-4. If Burks and Olave are available at pick #27 we shouldn’t pass them up.

  9. Stanglassman Says:

I think the run on OL and WRs is going to happen before 27. That said, Olave, Burks and Dotson would be high on my board. Corner is not the only position that crippled the Bucs last season. They need 4 solid WRs on the field for 17 games this year.

  10. SufferingSince76 Says:

I canā€™t wait until we are all picking apart the actual draft picks. Licht and company deserve the benefit of the doubt until the picks are in. Iā€™m not worried.

  11. Robert Says:

could CG coming back late be smoke and mirrors for the draft and others reasons?

just seems like a very long rehab, and I would think they did their homework on his knee before signing him.

    I smell bs,,,,

  12. MadMax Says:

Yep! Didnt realize he’s a punt returner too…huge plus. I’d still rather have Olave after comparing them, but Olave doesnt return punts/kickoffs. So I dont know, trade up with the Pats and grab Olave before KC does, or stay put at 27 and hope Dotson is there.

Ive been saying this for a while now because it made perfect sense. They didnt listen to my last year and it wasnt a good draft. But they listened the 3 years prior. I know we have needs at other positions and Im addressing those too.

2nd DT Logan Hall or CB Alontae Taylor
    3rd LG Ed Ingram
    4th P Matt Araiza
and somewhere with our last pick, LB D’Marco Jackson who will also be great for special teams.

  13. Ash Says:

I really think the injuries at the oline had the bigger effect than the wr Injiry Brady has done well enough with subpar talent at the wr but not at oline. So I wouldn’t be as worried as Joe seems to be who is infatuated with Dotson they may well draft a wr but much later than the first if at all they signed Godwin to a fairly big contract I doubt they are worried about his injury as Joe seems to be.

  14. Steven007 Says:

Marine, you certainly don’t need to fear what posters are conjecturing. I trust the brain trust won’t listen to a word we say. I trust them more than I do myself or any other poster. Do I look at film? Yes I do. Do I look at as much film as our staff does? Certainly not. Also I do not know the true timetable for the return of CG. And neither does any other poster.

Again, the idea that a rumor should lead to a drafting one particular player is ludicrous. That said, if they choose a receiver at 27 I’ll be happy with that because I know they did their homework more than I did. And that they know more about the current and near future state of the team than I do. Or any of us. The pick will be telling in that respect as much as any other.

  15. Infomeplease Says:

I prefer a defensive pick round 1 and 2!! Shore up the defense and the offense doesn’t need to produce 32 points a game to win!!

  16. SC Bucs Fan Says:

I didn’t even know Booger not only went to medical school but specialized in orthopedics. Must have been studying when riding the camera on the sideline.

  17. Your Mom Says:

Pure speed doesn’t matter, gotta be a good route runner too.

  18. BillyBucco Says:

Just because certain people say he is #5 doesnā€™t mean he is.

  19. zzbucs Says:

Even if this is true, I will keep on drafting defense……This DL has some holes….and if we dont fill them, we will not have any chance.

Wr position is deep enough, doesnĀ“t make ANY sense to draft a WR this year

  20. SOEbuc Says:

Please give me just a small break with the WR in the first round BS. Go off one word, one man said? Bet you still believe that Miami sh!t. Other than the fact we signed Gage, Godwin was a third round pick. 99.9% itā€™s OG or defense in Head Coach Bowles first year.

Even if this is true, I will keep on drafting defenseā€¦ā€¦This DL has some holesā€¦.and if we dont fill them, we will not have any chance.

Don’t tell Joe. He still thinks we have one of the best defensive lines in the league.

  22. gotbbucs Says:

Even if it’s true that Godwin might have to start the year on the P.U.P., which I highly question, they aren’t going to waste a 1st round pick on a WR. They’ll just go sign a free agent WR.
You think Tom Brady wants to spend possibly his last year teaching a green WR how to run routes? Brady is a timing and precision QB. He was getting pissed at guys last year that have been in the system for two or three years for not being exactly in the right spots. Brady has never been great with rookie recievers throughout his career. He likes veterans that know where to be.

  23. Bucs Guy Says:

Smoke screen. Bucs want everyone thinking they will take a WR.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I’m ok with a 2nd or 3rd round receiver……..likely be our #3 until Godwin is healthy….
But….to spend a 1st round pick there has future ramifications……we have long-term contracts with Evans, Godwin & Gage…..and do we want to invest in a 1st round WR?
Surely we could pick up a solid WR in round 2 or 3…….I’d like to see a CB or DT with our first pick.

Smoke screen. Bucs want everyone thinking they will take a WR.

It’s not technically a smokescreen if the Bucs aren’t providing the smoke.

This is media speculation, not disinformation sent out by the Bucs. Do they benefit from the speculation? No more than any other team. Truth is we don’t really know how they view their needs and rank players. So, although most people think, quite reasonably, that DT is the top need, or perhaps another position on defense, they’re not going to reach for a need if an explosive receiver is the top rated guy available and the drop off to a defensive player is significant.

Licht doesn’t really do smoke screens. He just doesn’t hint or show his hand towards any player or position. You might find some smokescreens in the top 30 team visits.

A WR like Dotson is certainly possible if the players like better at greater need positions are gone.

  26. SOEbuc Says:

lol Sasquatch. Bout to say the same thing. Itā€™s one person opinion. Thatā€™s some serious buzz.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

    Take a Guard at 27.

  28. tampabayallday Says:

Trade down and pick up a DB, DT and WR in the first three rounds.

  29. kyle Says:

trade brady to miami for picks. Lets rebuild!!!!

  30. Commander Says:

I don’t mind a wide receiver in the first with such a deep class. Even if the rumors are false about Godwin. But I’d rather see Treylon Burks, who plays the deep ball, is big, powerful, fast enough, has YAK potential. Can work in a Debo Samuels type role. Or Olave could be available also (although unlikely). If those or any of the other higher ranked wide receivers are gone and all the other value picks gone like Lloyd then trade down for Dotson. I don’t like him at #27.

  31. BUCman Says:

Hell yeah!! Datson is the most underrated Receiver in this draft! Definitely would have to trade up to at least 21 ahead of the Packers if they want him. He is going to be a star! Would be a win, win if we can get him while at the same time keeping him away from the Packers.

  33. steele Says:

If indeed WR and TE (Gronk) are now high priorities, where do they get addressed? Draft, free agency or trade?

The defense must be the priority, multiple positions are currently EMPTY, so much so that the rest of the offseason should almost entirely be devoted to the D.

So where do these moves get sacrificed in order to band aid more offensive skill positions?

If Godwin is out for the entire season (I consider Nov. to be end of season), then go for a free agent veteran or trade, a starter who is a WR 2/3. ODB, Jarvis Landry, TY Hilton, etc. are out there. Or package up T Johnson or Scotty, make something happen. Grayson and Perriman are decent depth, but they are not WR 2 or 3.

  34. BuccoChacho Says:

@madmax if the bucs were able to get P Matt araiza in the fourth round it will be the steal of the draftā€¦ I donā€™t see him making it to day 3.

On another note Dotson or Olave wouldnā€™t be as bad as people thinkā€¦ him utilizing the experience received by trade deadline and creating real competition and will make it so that other teams that have a need may have to do something desperate.

  35. Buczilla Says:

This dude is growing on me, but I’d only take him if Olave is gone.

  36. Anonymous Says:

I like Jahan but the buccaneers have plenty of WRs to fill in for Godwin. I can see jahan going to Green Bay
