“Whether It’s An Extension Or An Adjustment, We’ll See Where That Goes”

March 25th, 2022

Bucs GM Jason Licht

Yes, Tom Brady is playing for the Bucs this season. But will Brady desire his NFL freedom after the 2022 campaign?

That’s a major unknown. And Joe suspects that was part of the discussion when Brady went to England two weeks ago, assuming he actually met with Team Glazer there. Brady’s unretirement does not mean he’s playing only one more season, so his 2023 rights are a legitimate question.

Listening to Bucs general manager Jason Licht on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week, it sure seems like it won’t be long before Brady has a new contract.

“We may need to create some more cap space, or what have you, and that’s one we’ll take a look at and we’ll talk to his representatives,” Licht said while answering a question about a new contract for Brady.

“So whether it’s an extension or an adjustment, we’ll see where that goes.”

Of course, the Bucs would prefer an extension to Brady’s contract that expires after this season. And Joe confidently states the Bucs would give Brady anything he wants, including Aaron Rodgers money (plus an extra million, of course) in 2023 and beyond.

Team Glazer could always pay Brady a monstrous signing bonus as part of a Buccaneers-for-life contract. If he retires, then the Bucs can spread the cap hit over the life of the deal. And who could really cry foul if Brady signed a six-year contract and only played one year? The notion of Brady playing at 50 years old isn’t ludicrous.

Joe suspects Team Glazer already has a massive offer to Brady on the table. And as was discussed on the Ira Kaufman Podcast, perhaps an unnamed party also will place an order for 500,000 units of The Big Tom water bottle.

As ludicrous as the idea sounds of a football player playing at age 50, if there’s one human that could possibly do it, it is Brady. Then again, why, the very idea of a QB leading the league in passing at age 44, most prognosticators would have scoffed at the notion. Yet, here we are. I’m truly wondering how much longer Brady will play.

If he played 3 more years at somewhere even close to last year, every QB record would be obliterated and remain untouched until they invent QB cyborgs. 🙂

    GO BUCS!!

  2. MadMax Says:

He makes the draft so much easier….and yeah, pay him! Worth it all!

  3. VSyl Says:

Brady doesn’t want money. At maximum he wants to promote his brand. He wants to win and until this team can compete, he will be happy. With that being said, I hope he extends his contract for more 5 years.

  4. Goatfarmer Says:

Does that book have any of the details about the Brady-to-Niners and Dolphins rubbish in it?

Fiorio got played like a cello and looks like a boob with ears.

  5. zzbucs Says:

all the so called ¨favorites¨TB12 players are back and for more than one year, so I wouldn´t be surprised if he stays longer….Just waiting for Gronk.

By the other side Joe don´t waste your time reading that…..Florio was, is, and always will be a joker!!!!

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Maybe he’ll come back to the Bucs after his stint in Miami…..

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Sarcasm…of course

  8. tampabayallday Says:

Pay him. Make him retire as a Buc

  9. Demetrios Says:

We will see how the contract extension develops. If they add year(s) to the contract, he is playing nowhere other than here unless they trade him. If they add voidable years, then the Miami talk is not such a far fetched theory if he can eventually have a stake in the franchise after he retires. Don’t think it will happen but I would feel much better if he adds at least another non-voidable year to his contract.

  10. Bucs Win Says:

I’d have to be drunk to read that hack too.

  11. BuxfaninTX Says:

Mike Florio has it in for Brice Arians & Tampa

  12. Obie-Wan Says:

D Patrick He’s currently attempting to create drama indicating that there may be some “smoke” re: Mayfield/Tampa and Brady/San Francisco.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Agree with VSyl in that money isn’t what motivates Tom Brady, especially at this point in his career. He’s about WINNING, and it takes a quality TEAM around him to make that happen. Brady’s no fool, and he knows full well what problems the Bucs are creating down the line to allow us compete for the Super Bowl this year. But I’d bet that he doesn’t know if he’ll play next year any more than any of us do.

The only issue regarding his contract that Bucs need to face right now is can we reduce his $20 mil CAP Hit for 2022 by spreading it out over several years so that we can sign a couple more FAs (like Gronk & Suh?). That’s an easy decision for Tom Brady.

  14. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Tom clearly wants something it isn’t money, it is not coincidence this Dolphins story came back right now, he clearly doesn’t think the team has everything he wants yet, as when he get that or some kind of power transfer, he will resign and then Gronk and someone else will sign making his cap in 2022 like 10m.

  15. geno711 Says:

    @NewEngland Patriots fan.

1st part of your take — Tom not about money — very good.
2nd part of your take — Not coincidence dolphin story — very bad.

Reminds me of your takes that Brady did not want to be back because of Arians.

  16. New England Patriots Fan Says:

    @geno711

He doesn’t want to work with Arians that’s clear. He retired in an attempt to leave. Tampa would move him, he came back, let team rebuild, and now he wants something and its not money, or he won’t redo the deal.

The Arians beef is all but confirmed, its just to what degree the issue impacted Toms fake retirement.

  17. New England Patriots Fan Says:

    wouldn’t*

  18. catcard202 Says:

Father time is undefeated….Eventually, he catches up to even the greatest players. Thinking TB12 could go to 50 is a stretch…Even for Mr. Brady.

  19. Jerry Says:

Everyone is assuming there is some other motives or a demand for a trade or release or something. But remember that 2023 is a long time away for a soon to be 45 year old QB. I understand he’s playing well. But that can change very rapidly at this age. You get hit the wrong way and it doesn’t heal like you are 20 yrs old anymore. I seriously doubt even Brady himself knows whether he’s playing next year.

And also, a trade to Miami is very unlikely. They just blew all their draft picks on Tyreek Hill.

  20. Pops Malone Says:

Cheers Joe! Have a great weekend. Lets hope #12 stays around longer than one year. When he announced he was retiring, I began to have nightmares and Jack (the Throwin Samoan) Thompson was part of those nightmares along with a number of other QB bums from the past! Makes you wake up in a cold sweat!
    Chris Chandler….yikes!!!

  21. Kidfloflo Says:

I don’t believe for one min. If arians somehow really had a beef with Brady that he wouldnt sumerge that feeling to make it all good this year and beyond! He’s not a moron and would do whatever it takes to have a harmonious relationship, hell he can’t be as bad as Belicheat and is known to be a QB whisperer…plus Light and the Glazersnwould kill him for sinking the vibe in locker room! They have giving Tommy everything he ever asked for to make him feel like he has a chance to win it all….Arians included

  22. Bucs since 76 Says:

Brady is all about winning Super Bowls. Tampa or the Rams are the favorites to come out of the NFC to make it to the Super Bowl. In the AFC even with Brady the Dolphins will not even be favorite to win their division. I know the Brady’s are building a house in Miami but I haven’t been able find it when it will be ready.

  23. Buczilla Says:

Give Brady whatever he wants. Lol, I can think of far better things to do with the pages of that clown’s book than reading them. I used to enjoy Florio’s work, but since he decided to become (seemingly in his head anyways) the arbiter of morality, I can’t stand him. Plus, he seems to have a wicked boner for our Bucs.
