Tom Brady’s Backup Signed?

March 31st, 2022

Re-signed.

Earlier this week when speaking of potential backup quarterbacks, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht cautioned folks should not forget Ryan Griffin.

Lo and behold some three days later the Bucs brought Griffin back. He was re-signed today.

Yes, Blaine Gabbert, who went from talked about as a Bucs starting quarterback to unemployed in a matter of days, is still panhandling for work. And the Bucs are crunched for cash due to the salary cap.

Joe wonders if Griffin did such a good job being Brady’s tequila wingman it earned him the honor of No. 2 signal-caller?

  1. Listen Linda! Says:

    I have always like Ry

  2. Goatfarmer Says:

Griff and Trask are enough for now. Let Gabbert go and work out on his own. No one is going to sign him, he’ll be available if we need him. Enough of the Goob.

  3. Bobby M. Says:

I’m not sure who else we can restructure or how much more space we are looking for but I’m guessing Griffin isn’t our last back up QB signed.

  4. HC Grover Says:

    Simple…BA gone Gabby gone.

  5. SufferingSince76 Says:

I’m not sure what you can say about this. Charmed life or does he have the goods on someone?

  6. Robert Says:

    Camp meat

  7. MadMax Says:

Dont sleep on him….next year he may be needed and who knows.

  8. PassingThru Says:

So Griffin gets a quarter of a million dollars just for sitting in the best seat in the house.

    Where can I sign?

  9. MadMax Says:

lol, i keep getting moderated…im used to it this time of year…all good Joes…its my draft choice opinions, i know.

  10. bogiedr Says:

RG4 knows the offense very well.2 young QB’s learning from Brady sounds awesome to me!! Yes Gabbert needs to go. Jets, want a QB to mentor Zach?

  11. Jason Says:

So does Trask get a legitimate shot to compete for the backup spot or no?

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Robert … Since this is Griffin’s 8th season with the Bucs, I’d hardly call him ‘camp meat’. Matter of fact, he’s been a Bucs’ QB longer than any we’ve had, including Dilfer & Testaverde (6 years each).

  13. Marine Buc Says:

    No.

Is it possible that Kyle Trask could be considered as the #2 QB?

I really hope KT can be trusted and elevated to the backup role this year.

    If not – not good.

  14. WVBuc Says:

    @Bohby M
Whatever they may open for additional veterans, there is also the matter of signing the draft class.

  15. Ash Says:

Heard someone say Griffin wouldn’t sign until arians was out. ,😂

  16. Jerry Says:

Well you sort of need 3 QBs.
    We now have 3.

  17. Iamabuc Says:

But, but, but…I thought Arians said Gabbert was a great Qb!…🤣🤣🤣

  18. TheBradyBunch Says:

That guy is straight trash. Amazing he has stuck around this long.

  19. BUCman Says:

Griffin is #3 behind Brady and Trask. Trask may not have suited up on Sundays last year but neither did Griffin. Griffin wasn’t even on the active roster like Trask was. He was on the practice squad and that will be his role again this year.

  20. Bucs Guy Says:

Huge experience difference – I don’t really think so:
Griffin 4 attempted passes in NFL games over 7 years
Trask 0 attempted passes in NFL games over 1 year

Open competition for the backup position in training camp.

  21. steele Says:

Griffin is not awful. Look at his tape.

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You don’t measure a QBs experience by NFL regular season snaps….he’s had 8 years of TC, OTAs……practice reps…….mentoring by QBs & coaches….7 years vs 1.
I still believe to properly prepare Trask….he has to be given the backup role….sink or swim…..we are toast without Brady anyway….

  23. Aceofaerospace Says:

As a huge gator fan, I’m obviously a Trask fan. I, for one, hope he gets (earns) the right to be Brady’s backup. Eventually, hopefully years down the road, we’ll need another quarterback on the roster.

  24. Jordan Says:

This seems like an obvious sign that Trask is the #2 to me

Gabbert is too expensive given our cap situation. Trask is locked in on a rookie deal and should be ready to be the backup in year 2.

Griffin was likely extremely cheap compared to Gabbert and will be the #3

  25. Roy T. Buford Says:

Griffin should have started at the end of Koetter’s last season. And they never should have wasted another year on Winston. All that said, let Griffin be the number three guy. Gotta get Trask some reps too. I like both of these guys going forward. It’s going to be rebuild time in 2023 (would have been NOW) had Brady not come back. Get the QB room started working for next year.

  26. Hodad Says:

This means they trust Trask as Brady’s back up going forward. That’s a good thing. If they see Trask as an up grade to Gabbert, can’t complain.

  27. Lars Tatersalad Says:

It could be the case that Lefty doesn’t hold Gabbert in the same high regard as Arians does.

  28. SB~LV Says:

A 2nd round pick on the single most valuable position in football
Like it or not it’s best to find out how he performs in the NFL on the Bucs timeline than having to find him on the field after unfortunate circumstances.
So … in a perfect world easing Trask unto Sunday game time.
That would mean Brady coming out of games when it is in hand rather than happy stat sharing.

  29. NCBucfan Says:

    Bye bye gabby!!!

  30. sasquatch Says:

I’m not sure this means anything about Gabbert.

  31. NCBucfan Says:

Hopefully Trask gets 75-80 % of the preseason snaps. Got to get him as much live action as possible.

  32. NCBucfan Says:

On a more depressing note, the rams just signed bobby Wagner. SMH

  33. ClwJB Says:

    He’s number 3

  34. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

One has to wonder if the Bucs will go after Baker Mayfield, if he gets cut by the Browns ?

  35. David Jones Says:

Kyle Trask needs to learn from Brady that should be the number two quarterback both those other quarterbacks have been there done that that’s not the future of the team

  36. Beeej Says:

Ryan is a GREAT wingman. Anyhow, the $1-$2 million difference between he and Gabbert might create enough spare change to sign Gronk or Suh

  37. Capt.Tim Says:

Guess they have quite a few contracts to restructure, to get Baker Mayfield, Gronk, and Suh in the building.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Anyone saying Griffin is bad is full of donkey doo.

No one has seen him play in a regular season game.

For all we know, he sticks around because he has the same attitude as Brady. Maybe he will step up if the opportu ity comes along.

Certainly, no one here knows what he capable of.

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If Baker is cut and the Bucs sign him…then Trask gets traded.

  40. Tackleblockwin Says:

I always have liked Griffen. Good signing.

  41. IE Buc Says:

I like this a lot. Trask as QB2 and Griifin QB3 would be just right. With Bruce gone, I hope this ends the obessesion with having 4 QBs. With Bruce it was always 4 QBs no matter what, other roster needs be damned.

  42. Cleanhouse Says:

    Haha fair point

  43. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Griffin is only there to get the sandwiches.
