“This Is The Dumbest Idea I’ve Ever Heard”

March 28th, 2022

FS1 personality Nick Wright.

Nick Wright cannot believe what he is hearing. And he thinks the idea is beyond nuts.

With the Browns trading for Deshaun Watson and signing long-time backup Jacoby Brissett, it is pretty clear the Browns are done with incumbent quarterback Baker Mayfield. Whether the Browns trade Mayfield or cut him, it is difficult to believe Mayfield is on the Browns’ roster by the end of the draft next month.

Recently, BSPN’s Dan Orlovsky, a former Bucs backup quarterback himself, believes the best thing for Mayfield’s career is if he got traded to the Bucs. If Mayfield keeps his trap shut, his head and down learns from Tom Brady and Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians, Orlovsky says, Mayfield may see a career rebirth.

Of course, never mind Mayfield’s $18 million salary for 2022, the final year of his contract.

Is discussing this topic on one of FS1’s hollering shows, “First Things First,” Nick Wright said he cannot believe what is coming out of Orlovsky’s mouth.

“This is the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard,” Wright bellowed.

Wright added that the only way the Bucs trading for Mayfield makes a lick of sense is if — these are Wright’s words; not Joe’s — Brady squeezes the Bucs to trade him to San Francisco.

Wright also said, “Unless Jason Licht knows something” that the public does not, trading Mayfield to the Bucs is complete crazy talk.

If Mayfield is cut and clears waivers, he’s a free agent. Then, if the Bucs want to bring him in as a backup to Brady, Joe thinks that makes more sense.

Still, couldn’t the Bucs use the bucks it would take to sign Mayfield on an edge rusher?

You can see and hear Wright’s full take in the FS1 video below.

This guys as stupid as he looks. Baker should jump at the chance to be in the same Qb room with the goat and learn from him for a year. I doubt his ego would let him. Jameis did it with Brees and he had other opportunities to start or at least compete to start elsewhere. So it not like it’s unprecedented.

like peter schrager is a secret bucs supporter on GMF…

nick wrong has a stick so far up the wazoo about the buccaneers, it’s not even funny…

    he’s a bonifide bucs hater…

    .
    .

So Jameis took lowest-end backup money instead of potential starter money because he loves Brees so much? And you know this because crabby grabby said so?

  5. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

I guess I’m going against the early consensus, but this might actually be the first time Mr Wrong got something right.

  6. Jerry R Jones Says:

He’s a band geek trying to swing with the big dogs. Begone, Nick.

“This is the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard,” Wright bellowed.

Nah, not even close. Browns drafting Mayfield #1 in Rnd 1 back in 2018 was a LOT dumber. I mean like who makes a mistake like that? Oh wait …

  8. Jonny Says:

Jameis did not have market outside of Saints the first year he was free agent after leaving Bucs. I think Baker’s value is overrated as well. Some QBs don’t come off as good backups if they don’t work out as good starters. I can see Baker struggling to find a team and having to settle out of compulsion like Jameis.

  9. Hodad Says:

Just as dumb is him wanting to go to Miami, or San Fran.

  10. 1#bucsfan Says:

    Defense rules 😂😂😂

  11. Steve in Mad Beach Says:

This idiot was promising that Brady would be traded to the 49ers because the Bucs were in “salary cap hell!”

    Suck it Nick!

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Really struggling to be relative….gain attention…..completely ridiculous……we will not spend any real money on a backup QB…..

  13. Allbuccedup Says:

Mayfield is trash who in their right mind would pay 18 mil for trash?

  14. PSL Bob Says:

Wait, no way Brady would squeeze the Bucs to be traded to SF. It’s already known that he’s going to Miami.

  15. New England Patriots Fan Says:

His salary won’t be 18m, as once cut or even traded Baker can renegotiate a deal to not earn 18m. A one year training session with Brady would be amazing for Bakers rep and education. I actually think him and Brady are already friends. So their wouldn’t be the odd dynamic. See Trubisky under Allen became a starter.

My only hesitation is even his 5-8m/y back up cost would mean one less player for the roster in 2022.

  16. rriddler Says:

The Browns are paying the 18M if he’s cut. He could be had for a one year veteran’s minimum salary.

  17. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Nick Wrong is right up there with the other morons on these ridiculous talk shows that do not study nor know of what they speak. Dan O does study the game and does not shout nonsense like the rest of these dumbskees; the NFL show on ESPN has one person Dan O who studies; min adn that LSU DT just crack dumb one liners; if baker sets his ego aside Tampa would be a great place for him

  18. Mort Says:

Dan and Nick are both idiots. Turn off ESPN.

  19. Eddie Marz Says:

I don’t want Baker in Tampa either. He’s not a top QB. He might have been drafted as one, but time has shown he’s a average QB at best.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’ve been saying it for the past month…no one needs to trade for Baker because he will be released. And when he does get released, if the Bucs want him with the intent of having him ride the bench for a year or two, he’ll have to agree to it.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Of course, if you are insisting on a trade scenario…a team could get the Browns to agree to paying half of the 18 million. That would save them half and I think cap relief is what they mainly want.

  22. SKBucsFan Says:

A few weeks ago a number of people on here would have traded the future away for a QB like Mayfield. We still have Trask! Now as a backup. Why does paying Mayfield to sit on the bench make sense? Worry about the draft and how we will pay everyone instead.

  23. Duane Says:

Through their first 4 seasons, Mayfield and Jameis have virtually the same production. Both played with a bum shoulder and it cost their teams trying to make playoff runs. Baker is a smaller, less durable, less talented QB, with an entitlement problem. Not sure how he would have success here.

  24. SOEbuc Says:

Nick is at the top of the morons in sports analyst. Still talking like the Bucs will be trading Tom. Not only cus I love the Bucs and Brady, but they want to be sure they can at least have another run at the SB, and Brady would be the one to do that. Don’t all those corporations look dumb as hell for all the commercials they put Mayfield in.

  25. SlyPirate Says:

    BAKER IS A BACKUP

24th in yards with 17 TD and 13 INT.

Any backup could do that. There’s a reason no team has traded for him.

  26. Pewter Power Says:

It’s the make it up to create content season and they know it, I’m sure behind the scenes they laugh about it with each other.

  27. SPARKY Says:

Remember when the NFL had that 100 anniversary comercial made and all the all time greats broke into a football game in that restaurant? I thought Brady was real careless handing his super bowl rings to Baker to hold, because as we all know, Baker can’t hold Brady’s jock.

  28. kyle Says:

i actually like Nick Wright, I think hes pretty sharp. He has to hollar about sports for a living.. whata gig

  29. firethecannons Says:

Mayfield for free is not worth the roster spot. Mayfield should go the Lions after he gets cut and they should trade down or pick up a stellar pass rusher. The draft qb’s are not better than a Mayfield with a chip on his healed shoulder.

  30. BUCman Says:

I agree bringing Mayfield in is the stupidest idea. We want to continue leaving the door open for Brady to continue playing here beyond this year. Not make it appear we are already preparing for his departure. We should just keep developing Trask for the future in the meantime.

  31. David Says:

    JUST SAY NO.
Baker makefield is going to go by the wayside like Johnny football. He’s too short and runs around too much. If he has to look beyond read 2, he panics. He had a team that was run oriented, great defense, & really good receivers. The reason they failed is because of him.
    NO

  32. Capt.Tim Says:

    Not so fast.
Mayfield took a perennial loser to the playoffs. He showed some real skill, with a far less talented team than the Bucs.
If he could handle a couple years on the bench, working as a relief pitcher for Brady, He could easily mature into a good starting QB.
No panic, when Brady really does retire.

But then again, Blaine Gabbert has potential as a starter.
Acquiring Talented QBs is ALWAYS a good idea. Every team is always one sack away from losing your starting QB.
You better have a solid Backup

  33. WVBuc Says:

Mayfield has been wrongly maligned in the press. He played injured in 2021 and was adequate enough to be the best option in Cleveland. His ability and leadership was evident in 2021. I would be excited to have him backup Brady for next season and perhaps longer IF Brady returns for 2023 or have Mayfield be the replacement.

The press is rarely going to be fair to a white QB from the heartland who is a country boy by any accurate definition. Politics infect everything.
