Safe Bet Jason Licht Drafts A Corner Next Month

March 3rd, 2022

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht was talking to national NFL writers earlier this week and was asked about drafting cornerbacks.

Licht didn’t hold back in his lust for cornerbacks saying he wishes he had two dozen picks to load up on corners. Why is that? Well, Licht believes you cannot have enough.

With the exception of pass rusher, Licht firmly believes cornerbacks need to be stockpiled.

“I wish we had 15 picks so that we could take multiple players, especially in the secondary because it’s just by law of averages they’re not all going to work out,” Licht said. “But the ones that do, you put a premium on. Cornerback is a very important part of the defense. I would say pass rusher, corner, the offensive line, and quarterback.”

This may be the first time Joe has heard of a general manager suggesting corners are more important than a quarterback, assuming Licht had a particular order.

Here is Joe’s theory on corners: Are they important? Absolutely! Joe really liked Father Dungy’s theory on corners; he would always select at least one corner in each draft. That’s smart.

But you know what? A good quarterback can get a team out of jams created by lousy corners. And a good pass rush makes the corners look so much better (not unlike how a six-pack makes a seven look like a nine). You won’t find too many corners that can overcome bad quarterback play.

Safe bet they also draft a WR, a DT, and a TE. Too bad they’ve only got 6 picks.

  2. Adrnagy Says:

    Dont forget a kicker

  3. catcard202 Says:

A dominant Front 7 can make an avg. DB group look great…
An ineffective Front-7 can get a great CB/DB group picked apart.

  4. PassingThru Says:

I thought it was a safe bet that Licht would draft a CB last year, I just thought he wouldn’t wait until the 7th round.

  5. Esteban85 Says:

Please do not draft a dadgum kicker. Prioritize line and secondary on defense and TE & line on offense. This is going to be an interesting year for the buccanèros

  6. Tim Looten Says:

For now we have 6 picks in the draft. But if Whitehead, Gronkowski, Fournette and Jensen get some nice contracts elsewhere, we will receive 4 compensation picks in round 3 to 5. That would make 10 picks, of which almost all of them in the top 150. Licht drafts very good in the middle rounds so we could go premium on the DB/DL and get the skill/OL in the middle rounds. I am not worried at all.

Trask will be a solid QB. Look at this team and tell me we are not contendors for the division.

    QB: Trask
    HB: Vaughn / draftpick
WR: Evans Godwin Miller TyJo Perriman
TE: Brate / draftpick / FA
    OL: Smith / draftpick/Stinnie / Hainsey / Cappa / Wirfs

    DL: Gholston / Vea / draftpick/FA
    LB: Barret / White / David / Tryon-Shoyinka
    DB: Davis / Winfield / Edwards / Dean / Murphy-Bunting / draftpick

In FA i would love a TE like Tonyan or Schultz. At HB we can draft a 3/4th rounder in this draft or sign a FA for 3/4m a year.

On the OL we are set and I trust Licht big time to fetch us a starting LG in the middle rounds. Would it be a struggle early on? Maybe.

On the DL there are multiple guys available through FA or in the draft. We could add some depth at WR and CB via the draft. No worries at all. No super team, but certainly playoff material.

I say we go all out to stack the front line of the defense. We need playmakers who can pressure the qb. No need for top cb if u can’t pressure the qb. A cb can only cover for so long. Remember the losses or close wins were lack of pressure on the qb. Pressuring the qb lead to turnovers even with a mediocre player at cb. Go first three rounds on defensive front line then focus on wr, tightend, OL in latter rounds.

    Tim Looten

I could be wrong, but I think the Compensatory picks for players we lose to FA this year will be awarded in the 2023 draft…..we have no comp picks in this year’s draft.

As for CB….we definitely need to draft a CB in rounds 1-3……along with a DT & WR.

  9. Bobby M. Says:

I think a tag/trade scenario has to be on the table for Davis. It just doesn’t sound like he’s coming back, he’ll be in high demand….even if we snag a 3rd and 6th, those are extra picks which Licht has shown ability in those rounds drafting o-linemen and safeties as well as WRs.

I think its becoming easier and easier to see why Brady retired. There’s just no way to hold the team together and this staff really wasn’t out coaching anyone with all the talent we had. With lesser talent, the production from the staff will only go down.

  10. Beeej Says:

If we tag Davis he HAS to come back, correct?

  11. Robert Says:

They should have taken a corner in the 2nd round. Nothing against Trask, but when you’re trying to run in back you need depth.

  12. BA4President Says:

I don’t think he was trying to say those in order.

  13. Destinjohnny Says:

He actually spent a high 1st on VH3…..

  14. Dapostman Says:

Probably won’t get a gem at #27 so start trading back into the 2nd round and keep trading back until you have a handful of 2nd and 3rd round picks. There are a lot of good quality players on the board in those rounds. This team needs some young blood.

    2020: Winfield, Vaughn
    2019: SMB, Dean, Edwards
    2018: RoJo, C Davis, Cappa
    2017: Godwin

    All 2nd & 3rd round picks

  15. SKBucsFan Says:

Well that only took 24 hours for Licht to say something scary. He went from not trading away our future on a QB to saying corners are priority. Yikes! They are important, but pressure on the QB is way more important. It’s hard to cover a receiver effectively for more than 3 or 4 seconds. But if the QB is constantly running for his life a CB’s job gets way easier.

  16. Buczilla Says:

Our best corner is good at best and all kinds of injury prone. The other corners have had good games, but never a good season. I’d get rid of most of them and start fresh with free agency and the draft. Let someone else make the mistake of giving Carlton a big contract.

  17. Lord Cornelius Says:

I’m with mr Looten and I like his positive vibe

    Go Bucs!

  18. Letsbuccinggo Says:

Referring to defensive backs don’t always work out it seems like we draft at least two every year maybe we meed to a better job at scouting.

  19. FIRETHECANNONS Says:

    @robert

So we take a corner last year in the second. Then Brady retires.. who is your QB?
