No More Franchise Tag For Chris Godwin

March 16th, 2022

New contract.

Chris Godwin will be with the Bucs for at least three more seasons.

Jenna Laine of ESPN reports Godwin and the Bucs have agreed upon a contract, three years, $60 million with $40 million guaranteed at signing.

This ought to free up cash to help the salary cap-strapped (in 2022) Bucs. And fans can rest easy at night that Godwin won’t be a free agent for the foreseeable future.

Frankly, $20 million a year seems like a bargain for the Bucs. The way receivers are getting paid, if Godwin hit the open market next spring he’d likely pull in $23 million. a year.

Hopefully, Godwin can get on the field no later than Week 4. He’s rehabbing after ACL knee surgery in 2 1/2 months ago.

    LFG!!!!

  4. Posey99 Says:

Anyone who bad mouths Jason Licht after this offseason is off their rocker.

  5. MadMax Says:

    Oh yeah!! GJ Mr. Licht

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Excellent news! Sure beats losing him to free agency or having to carry $19 mil in salary CAP hit this season. Hope his recovery is speeding along so he doesn’t miss much of this season.

  7. Bird Says:

And people were saying he was going to be traded

The guy brady trusts the most
Anyway. Good deal. He is better then williams from chargers so all good
There is a little risk on bucs side with knee but he should be good to go
And his wife ia personal trainer so doubt he misses much

  8. ModHairKen Says:

Great move by Godwin. He can get another big contract in 3 years.

  9. Buc4evr Says:

All the trade talk about Godwin was nuts. You think TB12 was going to let that happen. Now Gronky and Lenny can get signed.

  10. Craig Says:

    Jason, LFG!!!!!

  11. Buc4evr Says:

Wouldn’t it be insane if the Bucs doubled down and signed Julio Jones as a 4th WR.

  12. Leopold Stotch/BuccaneerButters Says:

Can’t wait to see what happens next. Happy for Chris, glad he’s staying. Boy oh boy have my feelings changed since Sunday lol

  13. adam from ny Says:

couldn’t we have franchised gramatica then ?

    🙂

  14. Leda Says:

    Love it !!

  15. rrsrq Says:

That’s a lot of dough going to the receiving corp, will Gronk give the hometown discount, can we still afford Lenny – no defensive line signings, not even Gholston.

  16. Mord Says:

How much does that save in short term cap $?

Glad to have him, and easy to be optimistic about his recovery

  17. adam from ny Says:

these short contracts are all coming into play also because ownership , management and brady have all discussed the fact he will be here a year or 2……..and the ultimate max he will stick around before retirement is 3 years…

i predict we have tommy terrific for 2 more years…

maybe he blesses us with 3…

    i honestly don’t think he’s back for just 1…

he might yo yo around every post season terrorizing the bucs and fanbase about retirement – but truth be told – one tom brady is a football junky – it runs thru his blood – and there’s nothing he can do about it 🙂

  18. Cobraboy Says:

That is exactly what I thought his deal would be.

    The structure is the key.

  19. Cleanhouse Says:

Do we get another franchise tag since he didn’t sign it? How does it work?

  20. SOEbuc Says:

Hell motha-frkn yeah. Killin it Jason. Gronk sounds and looks like a lock in that barbershop outfit. Lenny and/or Honey Badger!!! I’m losing it and it’s only Wednesday.

  21. Bird Says:

Thank you brady. Thank you Licht and Greenberg

Brady makes the coaches look good too 😂

To think we still have butt hurt losers that want to move on from Brady. 😂

  22. sasquatch Says:

That’s a lot of guaranteed cash. He better come back 100% by the time the real games start.

  23. Leopold Stotch/BuccaneerButters Says:

Cleanhouse, no the deadline passed and free agency is well underway. Regardless of whether or not the player signs it doesn’t matter.

  24. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

    Well done, Jason!

  25. James Says:

@ Cleanhouse – It’s past the deadline to tag anybody else.

  26. Francisco Guzman Says:

Resign JPP, Gronk, and Fournette now.

  27. Fefe Says:

A world class organization would extend Mike Evans next- giving him a pay bump to $20M in exchange for a couple more years on the deal. Probably lowers his 2022 cap value too. Win win.

  28. Adrnagy Says:

    Perfect.

  29. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

At 3 years $60m but with only $40 guaranteed, that tells me third year is a potential void year for additional cap relief. LFG

  30. PSL Bob Says:

YES!!! Godwin is the man. Consummate receiver – blocks, catches and is selfless. Licht and the Glazers are killing it this offseason.

  31. Jerry Says:

Frees up roughly $14 million for 2022.

  32. Eckwood Says:

D line , d line , d line ……… I would also seriously consider Wagner or another middle LB and trade white ……… not going to get more than a third ( contract) but I truelY think he is an on the field problem at times ……..His head is McCoy big and I don’t think he is really disliked on a big level his inconsistency just kills everyone n the D…….. sometimes his great plays help but his bad plays are leaving people wondering and are really bad……… he is playing against his ego more so than the offense …….

Remember the goal is to get better !! Remove Whites inconsistencies and the worry of him not doing his job ,makes the D Better !! Call me Crazy but I actually watch the Games…….. I also contend he has great closing speed unblocked on the blitz but is always to high, terribly off balance and gets blocked way to easy and shows very little athleticism when getting blocked by backs …….. Sorry folks that’s just what I see !! I watch the Game !!

  33. Buc king Says:

Who else would you even tag?

I think gronk n fournette will be next..
If Leo decideds not to sign I can see us trading the 3rd or 4th for sas barkley…n keeping gio

    Rb should a easy fix..
I wonder what Julio price tag will be..I think.a call from brady n we have a super wr room again..

If we lock back up Edward’s n if God bless blesses us the honey badger the secondary will be done other then a draft pick…

Anthony Barr any clue on how he looks n price?
Might be a jpp replacement if jpp doesn’t lower his asking price
I think suh is back most likely but if not the draft could give us a young high motor guy to pair with vea…
Golhston should be inked back soon once he sees we are his best option I think he wants to be a life long buc.

This draft needs to yield us atleast 1 starter and some tough comp..
    Depth..
I think we have to force the rg competition
    Safety if no honey badger..
I’m excited tonsee how the free agency finishes out..
I think we have few more big signing n trades possibly left..this year is all in n possibly the next…

But beside that thank you godwin for 3 more years at a close to fair price

  34. August 1976 Buc Says:

Great…..BUT when will he actually contribute? A total wait and see, hoefully he gets up and running smooth by the last month. But do not kid yourself, he had a serious injury. And unless he is some kind of alien, it still takes time to heal, no matter what we see in the NFL. So many guys come back and it just takes time. WE will see, but do not see Godwin being anywhere close to full speed until the last 5 weeks of the season.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  35. Pewter Power Says:

Who’s next playoff Lenny or honey badger????

  36. Rod Munch Says:

His cap hit is $5-million now, frees up over $14m I believe.

  37. SPARKY Says:

Man, you guys look what these guys are doing. Brady, Evans, Gronk, Godwin, Jensen, Davis, Brate, and more are taking less money to try and win another super bowl for not only themselves, but also us. Appreciate what they are doing.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

Now extend Brady 2-years, put a ton of void years at the end, bring his cap hit down to like $10m, and you create another $10m.

Also might as well extend LVD as well. If he falls off a cliff in terms of play, oh well, in the meantime you could easily free up another $10m there.

Then restructures for Evans and Smith and the new guard, and there’s another $10m…

  39. T REX Says:

Love Godwin and he is a brady fav…but $40 mil guaranteed? If he’s not 100% that’s a bad deal.

  40. Alstott up the gut Says:

Love it! Necessary for the Bucs and happy Godwin is sticking around!

  41. JimmyJack Says:

I am a very happy fan right now. He is the most important part of the offense after QB. That is not up for debate and niether is the though if letting him leave Tampa Bay.

  42. JimmyJack Says:

August. Chris will be available befire the postseason. For a team built like this thats all ya really need to know.

  43. Ash Says:

@adam from ny I was thinking the contracts were so short because the cap is exploding and they don’t want to be locked into what will be a low contract in the next few years for a long amount of time.

  44. Oxycodoms Says:

    Glazers needs some props too

  45. Bucfan1988 Says:

Hannable Smith – I love it when a plan comes together…

JASON LICHT!!!!!! You are rollin’ so far!!

  46. August 1976 Buc Says:

JimmyJack…. I hope you are right, do not see why not.
But I am hoping for something in the regular season also. He will need time to get going, like I said the 5 weeks most likely, before the Post season, all the more to have the Brady led offensive machine being a well oiled and rolling.
Last year was good on offense, but many ups and downs mixed in with the offense because of injuries.
    Hopefully all goes well.
But again after watching the NFL for 46 years, who knows,I have seen so much crazy stuff happen when it comes to players after injury.

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  47. Woodie Mclawhorn Says:

.Buc King what the hdll are you smokin julio Jones WTF he can’t even walk anymore 34 and just look at his stat from last year at tenn and we alrezdy have 6 recievers better than him and you want Julio.LMAO tell me agian why we need or would want julio

  48. SB~LV Says:

    Happy for him
Crazy money out there in the world

  49. Woodenman Says:

T-REX M WILLIMS.CHARGERS JUST GOT SAME MONEY AND GODWIN IS AT LEAST 3 TMES BETTER

  50. Mtbucsfan Says:

    Suh!!!!

  51. westernbuc Says:

This is great news. Even if he misses some time this year, he’s essential to the offense and in my mind a top-ten wide receiver in this league. The fact that Davante Adams wants more than him is laughable

  52. lambchop Says:

    Awesome news.

BTW, OJ Howard is a Bill.

  53. bucschamps Says:

damn smells like we are preparing for 2 more seasons of Tom.

    LFG

Godwin won’t be a cap casualty that’s just silly. But I would expect him to be signing a cap friendly long term deal really soon.

  55. Jim Says:

    This is beautiful!

  56. Buczilla Says:

F yes! I thought for sure that he was going to take us to the cleaners next year. Great news for us and him. Licht, great job dude, I apologize, and I’d give ya a big hug if I could.

  57. Mord Says:

    Thanks @ Jerry and Rod

  58. Buck Rodgers Says:

Absolutely killing it! Notice most of the guys are signing for 3 years, it seems like we may just get 2 more years of Brady!

  59. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

I love seeing all the love being thrown Jason Licht’s way.

He has proven to be a DAMN good GM, with a tremendous staff. Somebody we can be proud of as Bucs fans.

    Hellll yes.
    LFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  60. David Says:

Awesome!! Suprised it wasn’t a 4–6 year contract to really stretch out some cash. The details will be interesting

  61. steele Says:

Have they effectively nixed WR as a need in the draft now?

  62. DaBux Says:

    Evans-Godwin-Gage-Grayson-Gronk

    Good luck covering that.

  63. Defense Rules Says:

SPARKY … ‘Brady, Evans, Gronk, Godwin, Jensen, Davis, Brate, and more are taking less money to try and win another super bowl for not only themselves, but also us’.

The only one of that whole group who took less money Sparky was Brate (down to $4 mil from $7.3 mil). And his wasn’t a restructure; it was a re-do (as in ‘IF you want to stay a Buc, you’ll have to agree to agree to a cut in pay based on past performance’?). The rest are getting their money, it’s just accounting gimmicks with the salary CAP hit that their money represents.

Brady’s still getting what he agreed to play for (smart businessman BTW; by playing for less, he ends up making a LOT more in the big picture). Evans is still making the same amount each year (actually a tad more). Gronk won’t come cheap (never has, but he’s worth it). Godwin got $20 mil a year; Jensen got $13 mil a year; Davis got $15 mil a year. Decent chance that all 3 could end up finishing their careers as Buccaneers. Smart businessmen all.

  64. Defense Rules Says:

    Mtbucsfan … ‘Suh!!!’

Yeah verily. Bucs’ defense has taken a major step backwards TO DATE since the 2021 season ended. It can still be ‘fixed’, but it’s not that hard to see that some major upgrades are needed.

Our Secondary was a mess last season, and not just because of injuries. Decent, but not spectacular, starters back there who NEED a strong pass rush to be effective. Depth cheap … but questionable by & large.

Our Linebackers (inside & outside) are very good, but they suffered from injuries too last season. LVD is solid, but not dominant like he was in 2020 (still think he played injured a bunch). White regressed somewhat last season, as did Shaq IMO. JPP simply shouldn’t have been out there (12 games, 2.5 sacks, 5 QB Hits, 31 combined tackles is very ‘un-JPP-like’). JTS coming on, as is Nelson. Minter provided great depth inside (but is getting old too), but the other inside LBs? Meh as LBs.

DLine has me scratching my head. Suh, McLendon, Gholston were critical & highly experienced (provided 11 sacks & 29 QB Hits among them), but they’re all over 30, and oh ya, they’re all UFAs. We’ve still got Vea & RNR (4 sacks & 13 QB Hits between them) but TOGETHER they barely gave us 1000 defensive snaps last season (that covers ONE DLine position worth of snaps … we need to cover THREE positions).

Have always believed that the best way to beat a team with a great offense is to keep that offense on the bench. Time-of-possession is important IMO, because excessive time on the field can translate into a very tired defense that can’t stop anything at the end of games (especially if that defense lacks depth). Have seen that too often with the Bucs in years past (and even last season). Bucs’ defense needs a lot of attention or we’ll likely be one-and-done once again.

  65. 2022 Year of the GOAT Return Says:

Well said Defense Rules … A strong OLine makes for a strong run game and time of possesion…. TB12 knows how to win dink and dunk move the chains control the clock

  66. Mark2001 Says:

I think all the trade talk about Godwin was crazy for many reasons. I think that includes as a point of order, that you can’t trade a franchised player until he signs. Until that, he is a FA, that has been tagged. He must sign before he can be traded.

  67. Mark2001 Says:

Mostly defensive draft rounds 1 -3 especially….If Fournette and Gronk come back.

  68. DoooshLaRue Says:

Very glad CG is staying. I didn’t think it was possible financially, but the front office wizardry continues to prove my thinking wrong.

    I am glad.

  69. Beeej Says:

I’ll never understand this cap stuff. We go from tagging him to signing him for 3 years at $20 mil per, and his cap hit for THIS year drops to $5 million…

  70. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Too much money. Love the player. Don’t like how selfish he’s being at the moment. Be like Brady.

  71. Oneilbuc Says:

Homer. He’s not being selfish because he wants to get paid. His wife is not worth 600 million dollars either he would be stupid not to get his money. I keep telling yall that the only players that want to come play with Brady are the ones that made their money already in the NFL. They are the only ones that don’t mind taking less money to play with Brady, for the players that only made 1 contract ain’t thinking about playing with Brady if the money ain’t right and I don’t blame them either!!

  72. King C Says:

OK have to admit I was wrong.
Thought for sure CG would leave for mega WR dollars.
He didn’t want to be tagged but he did want to stay and the injury likely hampered his free agent value.
