Looks Like There Will Be Quarterback Movement

March 8th, 2022

The latest.

So as Joe is wont to do, Joe flipped on SiriusXM NFL Radio to listen to good friend Alex Marvez on “Late Hits.” And there, Joe learned of potential quarterback movement.

Joe is partially convinced Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians is laying it on so thick for Blaine Gabbert because the Bucs have no other options. There just isn’t anyone looking to unload a quarterback. So the Bucs are boxed in.

Last week at the combine in Indianapolis, if Joe didn’t know better, Joe would swear Arians was publicly trying to convince himself Gabbert is a worthy heir to Tom Brady’s abdicated (?) throne.

Well, it seems the Bucs may have an option.

Last night, Marvez had long-time Colts beat writer Mike Chappell on the air. Chappell tried to make sense of why the Colts want to unload Carson Wentz when there are so many teams (including the Bucs) crying in their Big Storm Brewing beers wanting a quarterback, just about any quarterback.

And Chappell noted that his information from Colts sources seem to add up that the Colts are going to cut Wentz.

Now if you are asking why the Bucs would be interested in Wentz, Joe will spell it out for you. If not Wentz (who has shown a degree of competency), the Bucs’ choices seem to be Teddy Bridgewater, Mitch Trubisky, Blake Bortles and Gabbert. That is, unless the Bucs swing a trade for Deshaun Watson or Brady suddenly does an about-face and would rather hang with Arians over Hanoi Jane.

Yes, these are unsettling times for Bucs fans.

Dashaun Watson in Tampa, home of countless strip clubs and massage parlors. What could go wrong?

  2. Anonymous Says:

I say put the qb $ to keeping some of our key players that are free agents and we have to keep Godwin & Evans, Jensen & Wirfs. If we lose them then we have no qb protection or anyone to throw to that can catch. Keep Fournette too!

  3. Hodad Says:

I have no memories of Gabbert failing. It’s been so long since he started and played a whole game for any team. He did look good in mob up duty against Detroit. That’s what I remember about Gabbert. Wentz on the other hand, the last time I so him he was choking his team out of the playoffs against the worst team in football, the Jags. No thanks to Wentz. I’ll take Gabbert over him any day. At least Gabbert doesn’t look like a goofball, even if he ends up playing like one!

  4. westernbuc Says:

I really don’t think Wentz would be a bad signing. I don’t think it makes us a contender but at least next year would be watchable

  5. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’ve read articles that said the Colts want to dump Wentz for not only poor play, but also a poor attitude. No thanks.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Word on the street (ya sure) says that BSPN is cranking up a ‘TEAM BUILDING 101’ course for journalists next week. And that they’ve hired Jon Gruden & Bruce Allen to teach it.

I can think of a few journalists who might want to sign up. There MIGHT even be a guest appearance by Ira Kaufman.

  7. Bucs Guy Says:

Who are the Colts going with then at QB? It doesn’t surprise me that Irsay is willing to roll the dice with Sam Ehlinger (6th rd pick with zero pass attempts). He has James Morgan as a back up. Who? Very limited options for the Colts also unless they are going to draft a QB (doubtful) or sign a re-tread FA QB. If Wentz wasn’t good enough for Philly or Indy, why do we believe he’ll be successful in Tampa Bay?

Colts are going to see what they have in Ehlinger. Bucs should do the same with Trask.

  8. K_bassuka Says:

I prefer to roll the dice with Trask than this so called “quarterbacks” that no other team wants as their starter yet Joe keep wanting the Bics to go after to prevent a rebuild year. The reality is that starting any of those QBs mentioned in this post (minus Watson) will result in a rebuild year.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I believe Bortles is under contract with the Saints……

Wentz may be OK…if he’s cut & we don’t have to come up with a draft pick for him.

  10. Jonny Says:

Wentz rallied an underwhelming Eagles offense with no capable receivers to playoffs in 2020 season by beating Dak (who is considered a top 12 QB at least) and a loaded cowboys offense when it mattered. Wentz has many flaws, but he’s capable of having an above average team be competitive. Same goes for Kirk cousins. I understand these guys are a far cry from Brady, but this is the reality of the game.

  11. Ash Says:

Wentz is going to want too much money and he isnt that good. I feel it would be better to go with Trask or gabbert and fill the other holes that are on this team see what you have in Trask to see if you need to make moves in the 2023 draft.

  12. lambchop Says:

Wentz went to Indy to reunite with Frank Reich and still couldn’t find magic. He’s too inconsistent. We’ve already lost a lot of hair with inconsistency.

I think I’ll roll the dice with Gabbert if we get a OL to give him time and Godwin and Gronk come back.

    Can we get Lenny?

Honestly, if he doesn’t benefit from being in the same offense and having the greatest QB to learn from, then this will be the final nail in the coffin for him. It’s his year to perform. He’s shown signs of competency. Let’s see the guy play.

The offense won’t be in entirely on Gabbert’s shoulders, I think it would be wise to simplify the offense for him and add a little more each week to see how he does. But, let the playmakers make plays.

  13. Cchead Says:

    Mariota

  14. RumDude Says:

Personally, I think we should sign Mitch Trubisky. He wasn’t the problem in Chicago, it was Nagy’s play calling and not developing a game plan around Mitch’s strengths. Nick Foles, Andy Dalton and Justin Fields all had the same issue with Nagy and had worse numbers as starters.
If Ariens is really the QB Whisperer, the Bucs could do far worse than signing Trubisky.

  15. Que5 Says:

Trade for Watson or draft Pickett, Willis or Ridder. After hearing Licht, BA & Evans, it doesn’t seem like Trask has franchise QB potential in their eyes.

  16. tampabayallday Says:

Go with trask over wentz, the money can be used elsewhere

  17. RandsABucFan Says:

I just don’t see why we would pay so much for an average QB who hasn’t shown to be any more effective than Gabbert. Let Trask and Gabbert fight it out since they have at least one season under Arian’s playbook. If the Colts cut Wentz then lay a claim but don’t waste our picks and resources to get him.

  18. tampabuscsbro Says:

I agree with K_Bassuka on this one.

Joe seems desperate for a QB that will supposedly prevent a rebuilding year. All the available QBs are available for a reason. One of those guys will certainly result in the aforementioned rebuild year Joe is so scared of.

If Trask works out great. If he doesn’t work out and sucks it’s going to be a better market for QBs next year. This current batch of QBs in the draft this year suck.

  19. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

If you can get Wentz off of waivers I think it is a no brainer; wentz is a no risk it no biscuit type and for sure will throw 20 ints as all first year Arians QBs do for some gawd awful reason. Wentz would keep this team as a legit NFC championship team; of course the bucs defense and that lousy back end would have to improve drastically this year

  20. Rayjay1122 Says:

Trask would beat out Wentz if given equal chances to compete. To me, Wentz = Gabbert and both are best suited as back up QB’s.

  21. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

Watson is NOT coming to Tampa. He has a better chance going to jail.

  22. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

    Winston? Mariota?

  23. David Says:

As long as his legal troubles are behind him, I would love Deshaun Watson here. Fantastic quarterback but it’s not realistic because of his salary and the Bucs don’t have enough to trade for him.

Based on what is out there in free agency, Carson Wentz might just be the best option

  24. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Assuming Deshawn, Aaron and Wilson are not tradable.

Carson Wentz (cap $28,294,119) nearly beat Tampa in Indy this year. Will he win a SB with Tampas roster even with Chris, Windfield, Fournette and Cappa returning No

Will Winston, Trubisky, Bridgewater, Gabbert and Trask win a SB on Tampa in 2022 No.

Will Wentz/Jimmy/Winston make a playoff run for the division title Yes they could.

This a division where Ridley is suspended for a year, Kamara is on film crushing the orbital bone of a guy over elevator access. Matt Ryan may be traded, and Carolina has nobody good at QB whom wants to play QB there. However if Carolina got Watson they could be a division contender. Saints with Winston/Jimmy G would also be a contender for the division.

Because Jimmy G has shoulder surgery he maybe impacted short term, Jimmy G cap hit $26,850,000. Injuries have become the story for Garoppolo, as he has started [about] 50% of the 49ers’ games since the beginning of the 2018 season. He actually hurt his ribs 1.5 starts in the NE during the deflagrate suspension and they had t play their third string QB for 2.5 games. He is a better QB on all counts than Wentz, but his availability is 50%.

Wentz is exactly what he has been since 2017 a big QB whom can win games even against good teams, but is inconsistent. His 7 INTs were 28th in the league, so he’s not turning the ball over and losing, but he’s just wasn’t make the game winning drives you needed to win.

    Wentz Career According to PFF
Season No. of dropbacks PFF grade Rank
    2016 662 69.9 22 of 39
    2017 502 84.9 6 of 42
    2018 448 79.4 14 of 39
    2019 679 76.5 14 of 39
    2020 509 65.0 34 of 42
    2021 516. 70.9 22 of 42

  25. Marine Buc Says:

The Colts are going to cut Wentz?

This seems like more idiotic lazy analysis from someone who is too lazy to look up C. Wentz’s contract and realize that if the Colts cut him they will owe $15 MILLION in DEAD CAP MONEY…

I just don’t see this happening.

How do these guys make a living? If the Colts cut C. Wentz then they are dumber than dirt.

  26. Oneilbuc Says:

    No Wentz!!!

  27. Guzzie Says:

Honestly best case scenario, a 3-14 season and get top 3 pick with great QB class, look around at the league, other than Dak, the young superstar QBs were early picks, gonna suck next year regardless who we start at QB based on our brutal schedule, might as well take a shot at another franchise QB, 0-forever on 1st rd QBs, lucks got to change eventually

  28. tampabuscsbro Says:

Also this article causes one to ponder that Kyle Trask isn’t mentioned anywhere in it.

  29. Alanbucsfan Says:

Are the Bucs going to wait until Trask’s rookie contract is almost completed before they find out whether he can play or not?

  30. Nate@hotmail.com Says:

I’d rather thr bucs bring back luck or rivers or even Eli manning.. let’s just rile with the rookie qb then.

  31. TampabayDJ82 Says:

    Wilson just traded to Denver

  32. unbelievable Says:

    Welp.

Russel Wilson just got traded to the Broncos

  33. cover deuce Says:

If we can sign him then ok otherwise he’s just a slightly less mobile Jameis Winston. Trading for him on that contract is a non-starter though.

  34. Mike Johnson Says:

The more I think about it, Bringing Watson to Tampa might be a big mistake. Like it or not, we are known nationally for our..Gentelmens Clubs. And from the ones I’ve been in..opps, I mean heard about, some of them are pretty deeyham good!

  35. Robert K Foxworthy Says:

Their is a sizable contingent of colt fans that think the colts should hold onto wentz. His numbers where good enough that replacing him and those numbers will be difficult especially. Unless we can get a 2nd for h may as well keep him. 15 million dead money ouch. Colts can afford it but I rather it go-to receiver or pass rush or left tackle. We are looking at a lateral move if not a step back. The colts didn’t successfully land the big fish for the third straight year. They only reason to get rid of Wentz is to tank hard. Because Wentz is a streaky middling Qb good enough to make you have chance at play offs.
