Leonard Fournette’s Contract

March 22nd, 2022

Playoff Lenny returns.

So what do Playoff Lenny and Chris Godwin know that we don’t know?

Playoff Lenny, as you likely know, signed a three-year deal today to return to the Bucs. Joe thinks this is a solid start to the day! Here are details below by way of Adam Schefter of BSPN.

So Playoff Lenny signs for three years and Godwin signed yesterday for three years. Of course, we know Bucs quarterback Tom Brady returned and is on the final year of his contract.

Did Brady send the two texts that maybe, his wife, the model Gisele Bündchen, gave him the OK to play football until he can no longer play football physically any longer?

    Yes!

  2. PassingThru Says:

$21 million for 3 years, no idea what amount is guaranteed, signing bonus, incentives, etc.

I expect a good year out of Fournette. Shaq Mason is an upgrade over Cappa when it comes to run blocking. That lane between Jensen and Mason should be as wide as a 4 lane highway.

  3. Alstott up the gut Says:

Huge piece to the championship puzzle we are trying to build this year! Very happy! Go Bucs!

  4. mark2001 Says:

I suspect that this was the deal we basically offered him some time ago, he visited NE and found out that it was very reasonable, compared to what others would offer him, and quickly accepted it.

  5. Bobby M. Says:

I think for both players it allows them to make another guaranteed money grab when the cap is much higher. For Fournette that’s huge, he’ll be 30 and if still productive, maybe he snags ONE more multiyear deal…..maybe. Godwin likely has two more new contracts before he’s done.

  6. tampabayallday Says:

Good sign. Without lenny we would’ve lost a lot more games the last two seasons.

  7. gotbbucs Says:

All of these three year contracts on the offensive side of the ball are about trying to keep Brady playing beyond this season. Godwin, Gage, and Fournette all on three year deals.

  8. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

LSU Tiger players make NFL teams better.

  9. ViSyl Says:

The Rams is the only team to beat this year in the NFC. Brady knows that. This year we have a better path to the SB than the two previous years.

  10. Oxycodoms Says:

    Nice

  11. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

So glad to have LENNY back.
He has been a very consistent performer for us.
VERY GLAD it is also 3 years.

    LFG!!
    GO BUCS

  12. SteveK Says:

    Welcome back, big dog!

His skill set is similar to that of Vita Vea. Both large, strong, athletic, quick dudes who can ball.

I love watching the general call our offense and what Lenny can do for us out of the backfield.

  13. SB~LV Says:

It’s not how much others have
It’s not how much you make
    It’s how much you keep
    Good luck with your life

  14. Bucs Orlando Says:

The bucs have the best vice president of player personnel in the NFL.

Vice Pressient of player personnel Tom Brady deserves two paychecks for the two jobs he’s doing.

  15. mark2001 Says:

Come on Gronk…. time to end the drama. Just sign, already.

  16. Biff Barker Says:

Glad for Lenny! Welcome back. Great job JL.

Since Gronk is the last missing member of the band on offense, can we get busy on defense please?

  17. TDTB2022 Says:

    Come on SUH!!!!!
    Give us one more year.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Our draft is becoming much clearer…….you can rest assured that the top picks will be DT, DE…….later perhaps a CB & TE….

We are solid on the Oline….WR RB, ILB, CB, S…

    Maybe a late pick for a punter….

Where on earth is all this money coming from….

Looks like we won’t have enough for Suh, Ghooston, JPP

  19. voice of reason Says:

he’s productive, reliable, and he’s bought in. i like it.

  20. David Says:

I just can’t see Brady going beyond this year or next at the most. Third year is to help spread the money out probably. All I envision is them winning the Super Bowl and Brady retiring on top, the way he should.

  21. David Says:

Another shout out to Mike Evans and Brady for the contract restructuring.

    JOE !
Who else is a potential to restructure his contract? I know some are eligible and some aren’t. Last I knew Donovan Smith had a contract that probably could be restructured. Did he ever do that within the last couple years?

  22. mark2001 Says:

TBBF… we restructured a number of contracts, to make room. I think Jason has a plan, and knows exactly what he wants to do to keep the guys he wants, replace those he doesn’t, and be able to make the numbers work.

  23. Dooley Says:

Lets not forget Bill Bellichek helped set the trend that devalued the running back position years ago. Also its barely averaging 50 degrees F here in the northeast, Lenny was probably like “naaaaah” as soon as that crisp air hit him, which is reality check enough for some

  24. #8 Says:

A couple pieces on D to keep qb pressure on & this will be a great team (barring injuries).
Hopefully the insane luck of 2020 & insane bad luck of 2021 are a wash.
Give us some regular luck in 2022 & end the year the correct way.

  25. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

If it is 3 years 21million, I think that’s a great deal for both sides and he deserves it. This is huge. His personality has been awesome for this team plus he is a beast on the field. Go Bucs!!! LFG!!!

  26. Elita Vita Says:

Sign Gronk and build the trenches in the draft. Go Bucs!

  27. HC Grover Says:

He was driving her crazy around the house. She finally broke down and begged him to play.

  28. Anonymous Says:

That’s another 3 year deal. Guys I think this is a sign Brady is not going to just be a one year and done thing. His literal team is sticking around for 3 years.

  29. David Says:

I wonder if Bill B helped out his buddies in Tampa by lowballing Lenny. I mean, he just gave them an upgrade at right guard for a fifth round pick and less salary cap hit.

  30. David Says:

Anonymous… Joe is wondering that in another article too. I think three years is to spread money around. I can’t see more than two years. Realistically I see him walking off into the sunset as a Super Bowl champion after this year… As long as the Buccaneers do something on D line.

  31. DEEEMO Says:

AGAIN…WOW!!!!! Lenny deserved more money but think the Bucs might have over paid just a bit here. Glad to have him back on board! Now, PLEASE, build that D-LINE!!!!

  32. HC Grover Says:

Offense done. Now on to the defense.

  33. DBS Says:

This is great news. please get Gronk signed and start getting the defense signed now.

  34. Infomeplease Says:

Welcome back Lenny!!!! Stay tuff physically and mentally and great things will happen!!

  35. German Buc Says:

As a fan I am happy to have him back.

I only wonder how we field a D with all the money tied to the O. I guess Mike Greenberg needs a powerful wand to do his cap magic…

  36. Anonymous Says:

Lenny has that special ability to make a play when the Bucs need it the most. Be it a critical third down conversion or bouncing it outside like a dervish and finding the endzone for a go ahead touchdown or to seal a win in the fourth quarter. Lenny’s also a solid presence in the locker room.

Now we need a ring-chasing monster edge rusher to fall into the Bucs’ lap. Especially if the newly repaired JPP is lured away by a Jerry Jones’ big money offer.

  37. D-Rome Says:

Fournette will finish this 3 year contract as the great RB in Bucs history.

  38. PSL Bob Says:

If you could bottle the euphoria that’s enveloped Bucs Nation over the past week, you’d be a very rich person. I mean we were all but convinced that aside from possibly winning the division, the team had no chance in the 2022 playoffs. The question was were we reloading or rebuilding? Would Gabbert or Trask be our QB? And now, we’re a favorite to win the conference and go to the SB. Whiplash. Thank you TB12 and Mr. Licht. It’s magical, I tell ya.

  39. LetsGoBucs! Says:

    Edelman when, soon?

  40. Keith Says:

Is the plan to score 50 points a game?
    Defense needs some help

  41. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … I had the same thought about ‘Where on earth is all this money coming from’. Can see what they’re doing easy enough (via restructurings & keeping 1st yr of multi-year contracts low, but still can’t figure out the ramifications for 2023 & beyond. Pity the next QB (but not today). Nonetheless, while you have The GOAT, even at 45 yrs old, you have to swing for the fences.

  42. Wild Bill Says:

Bucs should easily dominate their division, especially if Gronk returns. Defense still needs shoring up. Making the playoffs should be a lock, barring injuries to Brady and other key players. The Rams will be the biggest challenge again. Pass rush and defensive backs remain a question mark.

  43. ElioT Says:

    LFG!!!!!!

    Next: Gronk, Suh and Gholston!!!!

Then fortify DL, TE, RB, DB in the Draft and Second Round of Free Agency!

  44. David Says:

    D-Rome

Absolutely. Everyone will say Wilder or A-train but not if Lenny is putting up 1300– 1500 yards from scrimmage each year.
This makes me think of 2 things:
    1. For all the “pound of rock” talk by Gruden, he vastly underutilized Alstott and so far has cost him the Hall of Fame.
    2. Any buccaneer career running back talk always saddens me because it makes me think of Cadillac Williams. No doubt in my mind he would be number one on this list if his knees didn’t blow up.

  45. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Defense Rules

Sure looks like since the Brady return the focused on offense..

Jensen, Mason, Stinnie, Godwin, Gage, Perriman, Lenny (and most assuredly, Gronk.

Defense….Only Davis, and Logan to replace Whitehead.

Sure are some gaping holes there….

  46. D-Rok Says:

Super stoked Lenny is back. He’s a baller, and more importantly, a very consistent player, and Brady can count on him each game. What strikes me as the most important element of Lenny’s game? He knows WHEN to ball out and get that first down, TD, whatever. There’s a time to go down after a 2-yard gain, and a time to run through/around people to get that extra yard, keep the drive going, etc. This offense is looking very powerful and versatile right now.

    Onto the Defense!

    GO BUCS!!

  47. #8 Says:

Licht, Arians, Brady know they lost dude to having to score 30 to win.
They will shore up the D–no chance they are that foolish.
Injuries killed the D, so wasn’t all personnel. We’ll get a few folks signed.

  48. SlyPirate Says:

I KNOW WHERE THE MONEY IS COMING FROM …

The cap is currently at $208M. Some experts believe it will go up to … GET THIS … $250-260M next year.

The Bucs are signing FA to 1st year bonuses to push the money into future years which will be absorbed by the higher cap ceiling.

  49. Anonymous Says:

David , if I remember correctly , Cadillac blew his knee out during a game against the stinking panthers on the same play running into the A-train.hurting Mike’s neck…terrible terrible play in bucs history…then caddy blew his knee out again and it was over..that auburn rb room was stacked..caddy , hillis, brown…caddy had that game against the vikings and off his shoes go….wilder , Dunn, blunt , caddy , are all good but my fav was A-train even tho he’s a fb…but Lenny might end up being the best we have had if he plays a big part in getting another ring…go bucs !

  50. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … Not as worried about the defense as I was about the offense actually. We knew we needed to get younger on the DLine; can’t really make that happen until AFTER the draft it appears. Once we know what we’ve got for youth to work with, I can see us bringing back Suh & Gholston (both as part-timers though) and very possibly JPP IF he even wants to come back. That leadership & experience will be priceless to a more youthful DLine.

And yes, I should be including a CB in that group because it’s highly doubtful to me that we’ll be able to afford to re-sign Dean, SMB, Edwards AND Nelson next year. We’ll be fortunate to get 2 out of the 4 IF we win another Super Bowl (my expectation).

  51. bucschamp Says:

I don’t mind 3 more years of tom Brady

  52. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Lenny will love Shaq Mason, who is a much better run blocker than Cappa.
Our Offense is looking awesome this year!

  54. DaRealist727 Says:

I’m just wondering how much of that 7 mil will count against the cap

  55. Buc king Says:

Honestly if we can talk marpet back we would be the best oline in the nfl hands down

  56. Mike Johnson Says:

What I really wanna know is…Will there be any cash left for the Defense? In case you guys forgot, thats what beat us last year..A good Defense.

  57. Bucaroo Says:

    Excellent!

  58. steele Says:

Glad you Lenny fans are happy. I am not. Stuck with Lenny and his mincing and falling down for three years. My only hope is that they still sign someone else, veteran or draft. And Vaughn blossoms into a stud. Lenny will be displaced eventually. There are simply better, more explosive backs. Everywhere.
