“I Can’t Wear A Kangol Hat”

March 31st, 2022

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

While listening to new Bucs coach Todd Bowles describe how he is going to run the pirate ship, Joe was reminded of maybe his favorite one-liner from the old TV sitcom M*A*S*H.

A local where the hospital was located got a hold of an ID card. With that card, the cardholder received free medical care. Soon the card began to be passed around to the locals. After noticing the fourth townie producing the same ID card, Hawkeye Pierce knew what was up and asked the cardholder, “Can you identify yourself?”

The cardholder replied, “This is me.”

That’s basically what Bowles said today in his introductory press conference as the head honcho of the Bucs.

Bowles said, based on his time served in New York and the advice he got from former Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians, he was like the townie in M*A*S*H with the passed around ID card.

“I’m just going to be me,” Bowles said. “I cannot be [Arians]. I don’t expect to duplicate the things he has done. He has won a Super Bowl and a division. I want to duplicate that part. But probably with some tweaks in a different way. There are a lot of ways to skin a cat.

“I’m just going to do it my way. I’m going to do it my way. I cannot wear a Kangol hat. I cannot be cool. I can wear a ski cap when it gets cold but I cannot wear a Kangol hat. So I am going to do it my way, with a lot of advice from [Arians], a lot of advice from coaches. But I usually say what I feel and I am a very straightforward guy, I’m very honest there.”

What set up this response was a question about what Bowles would do differently with the Bucs opposed to what he did with the Jets. It’s almost an unfair question as the statuses of the teams are far, far different. Bowles did add something telling.

With the Jets, Bowles confessed he “tried to do things the right way, but then you don’t do it your way, you end up having regret. So I am going to do things my way.”

Love hearing that Bowles will still run the defense while bringing Larry Foote and (the other name eludes me), along to take over as DC in the future.
    Stability

  2. Bird Says:

    MASH

    Great show

Lots of ways to win a Super Bowl. Been on this site for years where posters act like there is a certain formula. Clearly not.

I think Todd has the disposition to be a really good coach
In the end if we draft we’ll, we win

‘I am going to do it my way,’ – that’s where the lack of confidence comes from… Bowels sure had no clue from his 1st year to his last year as HC of the Jets!

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Todd Bowles … ‘With the Jets, Bowles confessed he “tried to do things the right way, but then you don’t do it your way, you end up having regret. So I am going to do things my way.’

Sounds like Todd learned Lesson 1 from Leadership 101 while HC of the NY Jets … ‘Be yourself; everyone else is already taken’.

I think Coach TB will do fine this year. Next 2 years will probably be a struggle, especially if Tom Brady retires, because of our salary CAP position. But hey, that’s why he’s only one of 32 guys in the world with the title ‘NFL Head Coach’ behind his name.

Great MASH episode reference, Joe. One of my favorites.

  8. Razor Ramone Says:

MASH was great until Henry Blake and Trapper John left, then it was just good. Mclean Stevenson was the funniest guy on that show.

Mash story reminds me of a Starbucks story. Old dude unfamiliar with the Starbucks “experience” comes in for his coffee. The Barrisita asks the old dude if he has a name for the coffee…old dude pauses and says…sure…call it Bob.

@SS76. Me too. If you didn’t watch the show “this is me” doesn’t sound like a great line but if you see the episode and the context of it, it’s a classic. Well done Joe! You are forgiven for sending me into moddy never never land so frequently.
