Dan Orlovsky Still Pushing Baker Mayfield To Bucs

March 26th, 2022

Browns QB Baker Mayfield.

Former Bucs backup quarterback and current BSPN talking head Dan Orlovsky believes he has the remedy that may save embattled Cleveland quarterback Baker Mayfield’s career.

That would be if the Browns traded Mayfield to the Bucs.

As a Tampa Bay backup, Orlovsky said Mayfield could learn a lot from Tom Brady. Just sit back, keep your mouth shut, watch and learn from Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians and Brady.

If we are playing fantasy football, this makes sense. The Bucs won’t find a better backup quarterback. Mayfield already has won a playoff game. Blaine Gabbert never has. Kyle Trask doesn’t even have a snap under his belt.

God forbid if Brady goes down, which of the aforementioned three would you trust to start a playoff game (if you are not choosing Mayfield, you are either being dishonest or your sister goes to the University of Florida, or you still wear a Terry Dean jersey to the bar on Friday nights).

Of course, we do not live in the land of fantasy football (well, at least Joe doesn’t). And Mayfield is expected to get paid $18 million this season unless Cleveland decides to eat most of his contract. There is just no way the Bucs can afford him.

The Browns just signed backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett. So it seems either Mayfield will get traded or he will get cut. Now if Mayfield gets cut and passes through waivers, then he is a free agent. Now then it might make sense for the Bucs to make a pitch for him.

You can see Orlovsky’s full take on Mayfield and the Bucs in the BSPN video here.

Hard Pass!!! AB was enough diva for two lifetimes!! I’m sure Skip Bayless would cream in his pants if we got him though.

  2. NCBucfan Says:

I’d rather have Josh Freeman come out of retirement then this bum!

  3. gp Says:

The only way Mayfield gets 18 mil this season is if it come out of Clevelands bank account.
Where he ends up playing, if he takes a snap at all, is another matter.
Personally think he has potential, but….. Where have we heard ‘that’ before?

  4. NCBucfan Says:

He arguably had the best roster in the NFL around him last year, and flamed out! Please kill this talk! Give Trask a shot post Brady! Or will it be yet another wasted 2nd rd pick, just like the brilliant move getting Aguayo.

  5. Alanbucsfan Says:

Mayfield as backup would be the same as Mariota as backup- what’s the point?
Better to see what Trask can do…

  6. HC Grover Says:

Cockrell and a 5th round pick next year.

  7. Casual Observer Says:

Too costly for the insurance benefit.

  8. Beeej Says:

We still struggling to pay Gronk and Suh. Gabbert can be had for near the league minimum, and face it, if Brady goes down, there is NO backup that will save our season

  9. August 1976 Buc Says:

“Hey Bub, can you spare a Nickel? I gotta sign this Baker Mayfield Kid”

    LOLOLOLOL
Maybe he will sign with the Bucs one day, but not this year, it is penny pinching time at 1 Buc Palace right now, with all the contracts still to be figured out. Just what is Dan O been smokin? Yeah thats right he gets paid to talk football. lololol Ok I understand perfectly, keep singing Dan O, maybe one day it will happen, BUT maybe not. BUT NOT THIS YEAR lolololol

  10. Your Mom Says:

Cleveland has the accelerator stuck and no steering.

  11. Goatfarmer Says:

    I’d rather have Terry Dean.

Mayfield being the biotch that he is would think he was competing for a starting job and bring drama. He’d be divisive and diva-ish.

Say no to drama this season. No to Bugger Minefield.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Dan Orlovsky` is totally blowing smoke……Mayfield makes no sense…

He’s too expensive……we don’t want to trade draft picks for a backup.

We have Trask…….I want to hear Orlovsky claim Trask is a total bust……unless he does that, it’s all BS.

  13. catcard202 Says:

Frankly, I’d love to see Baker as the BU to TB12….But I just cannot see it happening, unless he’s cut by CLE & then passes up chances at competing for a QB1 job in HOU, ALT or CAR. (Which are likely to be bidding for his 2022 services – if cut)….Or even in AZ, as that FO’s fallback plan for the souring relationship between Murray & the Cardinals.

All would be 100% better landing spots than TB, if he’s free to chose his next landing spot.

For the Bucs…Gabbert still makes the most sense as the “VET BU QB” alluded to by Licht, from both familiarity & price point perspectives…Would expect he gets resigned, even if it’s in JUN.

  14. Steven007 Says:

Rojo officially a Chief. Will be interesting to see how he fares there.

  15. Colin in Canada Says:

The national media has no clue when it comes to the Bucs. Thankful for the Joe’s and some others for their coverage of the Bucs.

  16. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Makes total sense to me. And you can sign him for the same team friendly the Aints signed Jaymiss on his first year with them.

  17. ModHairKen Says:

Terry Dean Jersey. That was one of the best lines I’ve seen, Joe, in a month of Sundays. I’m cleaning up coffee from the table I just spit out laughing.

  18. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

Hey Dan! NOBODY IS TRADING FOR THAT CONTRACT UNLESS CLEVELAND FOOTS NEARLY THE FULL BILL AND LIKELY GIVES UP A PICK AS A CONVENIENCE FEE.

  19. Bucs&Bolts Says:

    No effing way

  20. 1sparkybuc Says:

It’s disrespectful to this offense to state they can’t win without games without Brady. Why treat Trask like the enemy? That makes no sense at all. I’m excited that he gets another year to watch and learn from Brady. He has been more than ready and prepared as a backup in HS and in college. He deserves respect for that. I remember the Steelers and the Dolphins having immediate success with rookie QBs. Trask is no rookie, and no rookie ever had a better starter to learn from than Trask did last year. He’s a Buc. Support him until he takes off his jersey and does jumping jacks in the end zone during a game. He just might turn out to be our Marino or Rothlesburger (without the rape accusation). Show some respect for the team around him too. This offense could very well be the best ever assembled around a Buccaneer QB.

  21. VSyl Says:

These media clowns should shut the f up

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I said a month ago that Baker will end up being cut…and I’m sticking to that.

If he is and the Bucs can get him cheap? Might be worth it. Sign him to a two year deal with incentives. Tell him if he ends can prove himself if given the chance, he can get a new deal when Tom actually retires.

  23. 1sparkybuc Says:

Your censor has a screw loose.

  24. FERNANDO DIAZ Says:

    Dan is a jagoff

  25. Buc1987 Says:

What team would trade draft picks for a backup QB?

  26. Elita Vita Says:

If so, what becomes of Trask?

  27. SlyPirate Says:

    RECORD SETTING …

With Mayfield, Gronk, and Brady, the Bucs would easily rank #1 ALL TIME in most players in commercials on Sundays.

  28. Bucs since 76 Says:

We don’t need no freaking backup we have Trask for that. They will sign Gilbert as a option in case Trask shows his not a NFL QB.

  29. Biff Barker Says:

Dan Orlovaky is a few fries short of a happy meal on this take.

  30. gotbbucs Says:

    Nope.
There’s having justified confidence and then there’s just being a cocky douche bag. Baker is the later.

  31. 1sparkybuc Says:

No profanity. No political BS. You censor opinions about the team and the players without any explanation. That’s just wrong.

  32. Bucanero Says:

How would TB12 feel about it? Does management know for sure it is TB12 goodbye tour? I understand that he would be a backup for one year and then may inherit the Licht House? It’s an ok insurance but would be worried about upsetting Tom and pushing him away from Tampa next season. I’ll take him as long as TB12 is good with it and Baker knows that he only would have a year as backup and nothing else guaranteed.

  33. Bucsfan4ever Says:

The browns are like the jets or the jags or the lions.
Trouble is when you take them out of that cesspool and put them in a fresh pond they’re always too damaged to recover.
NFL has butchered up a ton of good qbs with terrible teams lately.

  34. TBChucky Says:

I’d take him if Cleveland eats almost all his salary.. IF he becomes a FA I see him in Steelers black and gold.

  35. New England Patriots Fan Says:

He’s a 20-10th caliber QB, Cleveland’s coaching is trash, I’d take Mayfield over Macjones if Macjones cost 18m/y.

Baker if given the chance will be a playoff QB again if he lands in a good organization.

If he went to Pitt, and even if DW isn’t suspended, Pitt will be first seed in AFC North.

Even with Trubisky I have Pitt getting no1 seed in division. Even with Burrow and Lamar and DW playing.

Pitt just a perennial championship team, and Ben was a sub 32 starting QB and they still made playoffs so with Baker they will be division winner.

  36. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Baker on Tampa right now if Brady retired today but everyone else stayed except Gronk would win this division. But probably lose to Rams or Green Bay.

  37. Scooter Says:

Cleveland now has Bill Cosby Jr.

  38. Winny Testaverde Says:

Danny Oh just ran outta the back of the end zone again. His talk is so tough you’d think he was an all time great QB. Reminds me of Sean Salisbury before he started showing pics of his inch high private eye.

  39. NCBucfan Says:

New England Patriots Fan, I would still prefer to roll the dice with Trask than Baker! Baker does well in commercials and against the decrepit rothlisberger Steelers, but other than that, what else has he donebesides bi$$h and moan?

  40. BelleGladeBuc Says:

Baker Mayfield has been spoken about very negatively in the media from personalities, teammates/former teammates, coaches and staff of an organization.

The fact that NOBODY who has/had a working relationship with Baker has come to Baker’s defense is very telling.

It appears that Baker is a parasitic type of personality to work with.

Just like you wouldn’t ask an actual parasite to weaken you, why would you ask a figurative parasite to weaken your organization’s workplace environment?

  41. BUCman Says:

If they bring Baker in that would mean they are giving up on Brady playing here in 2023 and that they are giving up on developing Trask for the future. I don’t see either happening. Keep with the plan. Stock the roster to encourage Brady to play here for as long as he wants and keep developing Trask for when he eventually leaves.

  42. NCBucfan Says:

The difference between Matt Ryan and Baker is that Ryan handled it like a true pro! You didn’t see him whining and crying like a scorned female! Ryan is way more accomplished than Baker, and if anybody had a right to b$$$h, it was Ryan. I’m glad Ryan was traded out of the division, I can actually root for him now that he isn’t on the Dixie Chicks. Hopefully it’s the Bucs and colts in the SB.

  43. Allbuccedup Says:

    Dan O is an idiot

  44. BradyBucs Says:

    IN TRASK WE TRUST

  45. David Says:

Why would anyone think he could possibly be a good fit? He does best a little bit out of the pocket when not under pressure. Under pressure, he runs and panics. In the pocket, he can’t see most the field and does not process things quick enough to get beyond his second read

    No thanks

  46. Pickgrin Says:

“if Mayfield gets cut and passes through waivers, then he is a free agent”

As a 5th year player (a veteran) – I’m not sure Mayfield would need to clear wavers.

Also not sure the Bucs or another team would be required to pay the $18M if he gets cut that….

Baker may be able to choose his team and sign a new deal if Cleveland cuts him outright.

  47. cmurda Says:

No way. I feel you will be hard pressed to find a team willing to invest in a multi year contract with Baker. If it goes as I expect Baker will sign a 1 or a 2 year with a voided second year contract. That means if TB hangs it up after this year or moves on somewhere else, Baker will probably be available then. No way to you chew up a bunch of cash or commit to him this year. Not buying it.

  48. Fishhawkbuc Says:

Brady would pop him like the little pimple he is.

  49. Allbuccedup Says:

Dude threw 56 ints first four years Jameis threw 58 in his first four years. That says it all.

  50. NCBucfan Says:

Allbuccedup, He’s also had the best running attack behind him in Chubb and Hunt the last couple years. Then wonders why the Browns were searching for a better option. Its almost laughable.

  51. NCBucfan Says:

Then you have the people on here blaming the browns coaching staff. Didn’t Kevin stefanski take the Vikings to the NFC championship game with case Kennem at QB. I mean at some point, you have to call a spade a spade

  52. Pewter Power Says:

He played football or at least was in the nfl, no need to read his take because he can’t be that stupid. Who’s gonna pay this dude 18 million to be a backup even the saints prefer Winston to this guy

  53. SB Says:

I would take Winston back over Mayfield.
    That is saying something.

  54. Buc king Says:

I say carry 2 qb..brady n trask… don’t waste no more money paying people to hold clip boards..force brady n Trask to bond n work together…no need for anyone else..if brady goes down the season is over…no Gabbert isn’t going to safe us or any of these free agent qbs..it be up to Trask to learn at that point.

  55. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Winston as of last season was 20-10 level QB. He would’ve been in playoffs in 2021 if not hurt.

Currently Winston is the second best QB in AFC South and is highly likely to make a wildcard appearance in playoffs as Saints are a very good team.

Brady Rodgers Stafford are tier 1 NFC QBs, tier 2 are Murray Dak, garropollo wentz Cousins Winston everyone else are tier 3 talent or under 20-32

In the AFC he would be tier 3 but because of the talent level in NFC Winston is a playoff QB and so would Baker in the NFC on an average to strong team.

  56. Buczilla Says:

If Brady hadn’t come back, I think there’s a great chance that Mayfield becomes a Buc. Some team desperate enough for a qb will end up with him for some mid round picks if the Browns eat enough of his salary.

  57. Itzok Says:

Baker won’t cost very much since the browns have to eat it. Personally I think he should sign with the steelers beat out turbisky wear a Cleveland socks shirt twice a year as he gets revenge on the browns. That would be on brand for baker, and help restore a rivalry in the nfl
