BSPN: Bucs, Chris Godwin Trying To Work Out Long-Term Contact

March 8th, 2022

Update.

Last night Jeff Howe of The Athletic reported it was premature to suggest the Bucs will franchise tag receiver Chris Godwin for the second consecutive season. Why? Because Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht had something else up his sleeve.

And indeed this morning Diana Russini of BSPN reports Licht and Godwin’s camp are trying to work out a contract before the 4 p.m. tag deadline today.

Joe has long maintained the smart move by the Bucs this offseason was to sign Godwin and tag center Ryan Jensen. But that was before Tom Brady retired (?). Joe is strongly confident that if Jensen walks out the front door of One Buc Palace, so too does any hope Brady may change his mind and play for the Bucs in 2022.

Brady is not going to return to a team that lost two Pro Bowlers tasked with keeping his jersey clean. That’s all there is to it. Left guard Ali Marpet retired.

Awesome; he needs to get the $15 mil range and go with that after coming off his knee injury if he could get a 60 million signing bonus he is set for life

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Licht should get something done…..he’s been working with Godwin’s agent for a couple of years now…..each side knows what they want…..

Chris Godwin is outstanding in every respect…..we need to keep him paired with Mike….

  3. David Says:

PLEASE get a long-term deal done. Then tag Jensen.

  4. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

Sign CG for around 16mil. Tag Jensen. Try and sign CD for around 12. Lenny for 5 or 6. The rest. I don’t really care.

  5. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I hope we can get something done, because we may need the franchise tag for someone else.
This is what I read yesterday about Godwin, so I was surprised when it was reported that we were gonna use the Tag on him, for a second year.

  6. voice of reason Says:

    CGOD forever!

  7. Marine Buc Says:

Godwin will get more than $15M per season.

    5 years $95M – $50M guaranteed…

  8. Austin Says:

Brady aint coming back, to the bucs at least. We are going to lose good players on both sides, the team will be worse, he wont come back to a worse team

  9. Kalind Says:

Joe, can’t they just transition tag Jensen? Leaving them the option to franchise Godwin still should the need arise? (Personally I’d rather they transition Whithead…but w.e)

  10. BigMacAttack Says:

They’re all so dang overpaid it’s a joke. Now you have QB’s wanting $50-70mil per season. Don’t they even think of the other players on the team they’ll be playing for. I hate the business side of football. For a QB to think he’s worth 3-5x more than a top tier receiver is madness. I’m not a communist yet, Russia still has to cross an ocean, but I’d like to see a little less disparity from players at the top and the bottom. Too many NFL players have 4 year degrees and can’t even speak the English language coherently. Well at least they can afford to buy gas, do there’s that.

  11. Robert Says:

he’s banged up and we have no qb. let him test the market..

  12. Onetrickpony Says:

    What David said

  13. Defense Rules Says:

‘Joe is strongly confident that if Jensen walks out the front door of One Buc Palace, so too does any hope Brady may change his mind and play for the Bucs in 2022.’

Hang tough Joe. That horse is dead, but I’m sure you can breathe new life into him.

Dusthty … Godwin will get considerably more than $15 mil IF he tests the FA market. Probably $3-$5 mil more per year. Lots of teams are desperate for a WR who can do what CG can do. Falcons come to mind for starters now that Ridley got himself suspended for at least this season.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

BigMacAttack … You can stop worrying. Russians don’t swim well I’ve heard, and most NFL players don’t get paid to speak; they get paid (handsomely) to produce on the field. Good thing huh.

  15. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Chris can be resigned with a low cap hit in 2022, I saw one writeup it could be 6-7m in 2022 with a 15m/y average. Pushes cap into 2023-2026

  16. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Look on Pat Macfee show today for the update on Aaron Rodgers Adams, story, I think he and Adams gets traded to Bronocs for a player, 2 first and a second or maybe more. Von miller also looking to return to Broncos.

  17. SufferingSince76 Says:

Personally, I’m glad the Bandits are back!!

  18. Mark Bennett Says:

This is kind of a “no S sherlock” article. We all knew the Bucs would do everything in their reasonable contractual power to keep Godwin here for years. And if not, most likely franchise him again. Who is surprised?

  19. Bird Says:

    [Not yet. — Joe]

  20. Steven007 Says:

    Apparently he’s just been tagged…

  21. Stanglassman Says:

    They tagged him.

Ouch what a mistake. God awful offseason won’t stop.

  22. David Says:

    New England Patriot

I don’t know if they can get Rodgers, Adams and Miller but getting Rodgers and getting Miller to come back looking like a possibility.

  23. richbucsfan Says:

According to Ian Rappaport the Bucs tagged Godwin. Interesting…

  24. David Says:

In other news- Calvin Ridley of the Falcons gone for the year. People are going to argue that it’s too harsh for the parlay bets he did but … oh well!!
It’s real simple: if you play in a professional sport you DO NOT gamble on it.

  25. Steven007 Says:

Only a mistake if they don’t sign them to a contract soon. If he plays on the tag then I agree it’s a mistake.

  26. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

Pay the man & use tag on someone else…

  27. Robert Says:

I like the tag……see if that knee holds up. and he will get less yards with a lesser qb and his value on long term deal would be less provided the knee holds.

  28. Ash Says:

He hasnt got tagged yet bucs sound so desperate for Godwin though. Im probably in the minority in this but I think it would be such a mistake to tag him again and let Davis walk going to be a big market for Davis for good reason.

  29. Bird Says:

    Joes

Just curious. Whether it happened or not with godwin.

  30. Alanbucsfan Says:

Sign Godwin long term or tag him- Bucs must do everything they can to convince Brady to return mid season.

  31. Coburn Says:

Should def be a deal with incentives. Make it enticing enough that he still has some cash if he struggles rehabbing, but that if he is never the same you can save some of your losses. Don’t know exactly what that sweet spot looks like, but I’d hope someone like Licht would

  32. Posey99 Says:

“I like the tag……see if that knee holds up. and he will get less yards with a lesser qb and his value on long term deal would be less provided the knee holds.”

Exactly. I agree. I like the guy but he destroyed his knee. You can’t blow all that cash on an unknown.

  33. Coburn Says:

And make them easy enough to achieve. Could be based on roster spot or maybe something easily achievable like 60 catches

  34. Beeej Says:

We have until 4:00 p.m. to tag him, I don’t see what’s the point of doing it before noon

  35. Defense Rules Says:

Can’t believe that JL actually tagged Godwin for the SECOND time. We just used $19 mil of our salary CAP on a guy who MAY only play 8 or 9 games for us, and THEN move on next year anyways. In what universe does that make any sense? Oh I forgot, in JBF World.

  36. Alanbucsfan Says:

Godwin will be ready week 1

  37. T REX Says:

Licht back to being pre-brady licht…weird how that is.

    Welcome to the Yucs!

  38. Letsbuccinggo Says:

Lichts had all year to get this done and hed waiting until the last second thats pure incompetent. If I was Godwin I would not sign and let him tag you at 19.2 mil. Because you know Licht going to put an injury clause in his contact if he tags Godwin he can’t.
