“We Won One Without Him”

February 15th, 2022

Joe expected to see Buccaneers legend Warren Sapp do all kinds of interviews on Radio Row at the Super Bowl like he usually does, certainly an extended sitdown with Rich Eisen.

But Sapp largely kept to himself and away from the limelight.

He was in Los Angeles, however, and the folks at TMZ found him outside a Hollywood party and asked Sapp if the Bucs would get back to the Super Bowl without Tom Brady.

“(Laughs) We won one without him,” Sapp replied in way that only he can.

The quick answer gave Joe pause and then Joe fist-pumped the air. Damn right the Bucs can win one without Brady, but they still need a quarterback with experience and savvy in a hurry. A Brad Johnson type could get the job done in 2022, Joe believes.

No, the post-Brady era doesn’t have to be an immediate downer the way it feels like right now.

Sapp went on to lecture the TMZ reporter that he is one of five first-ballot Hall of Fame defensive tackles and Aaron Donald needs to match that, which Sapp believes he will.

True, but back then, we got Monte Kiffin. You can’t win SB with Toooddd B.
So, we got TB12, and we won another one.
Now that Tom left, and who knows how many others shall, I don’t think we can have a wining season.
But powerless, as always, fans just bla bla bla, and then forget, and then start over again.
Warren Sapp, what an elite defender, part of an exceptional group, leaded by the bst coordinator of the business. Good Time!

  2. Hodad Says:

Let’s hope a Blaine Gabbert can get that done Joe, because he’s the vet you’re talking about, and will be the opening day starter.

  3. QB1 Says:

Jamoist was a great game manager, for the other team. Joe would love America’s skid mark back in the fold.

  4. Swampbuc Says:

I love #99. He is right, the Bucs did win one without him.

But those Bucs had Monte Kiffin, and (should be) 5 HOF players — Sapp, Brooks, Lynch, Barber, and Rice, and an underrated Shelton Quarles who was the perfect Tampa 2 MLB.

We have a DC who goes on job interviews instead of preparing his team for their opponent, and if that’s not the reason, then brain damage or some other ineptitude causing condition is at the root. The defense was supposed to,carry this Bucs team in the playoffs this year because of how depleted the offense was.

So – sorry, #99, unless you and your mates are gonna suit back up and come out of retirement, the Yucs have just been reborn. This defense with this uncoordinator just proved just how much they suck.

  5. Cobraboy Says:

Seriously: if Brady, for whatever reason, doesn’t want to be a Buc, do we really want him at QB?

I’m a little surprised that Brady, who generally wants to take the “high road” for reputational reasons, has allowed the drama to fester.

  6. Listnfrmafar Says:

Let’s see it was HOW MANY years ago and how much talent was there on both sides of the ball and ST’s? Not to mention most important a FAR better coaching staff. Brad Johnson vs Rich Gannon, one for the ages. Not exactly Brady vs Mahomes. A decade of caca awaits.

  7. Cleanhouse Says:

Warren Sapp is the biggest A-hole in the world- met him first hand…. But I like what he’s saying and I liked his time as a player- can’t argue with any of that.

  8. Listnfrmafar Says:

Cobra, what should Brady do? Announce his retirement? Hmm.

  9. Casual Observer Says:

Agree with the reputation concerns. If TB isn’t careful he will be tarnishing his unimpeachable legacy in Tampa.

  10. Bqen green Says:

Only a bankrupt person, literally and figuratively could encapsulate why the bucs are the bucs. Live forever on that generation ago championship, it’s all y’all got without TB12. We’re talking about the franchise that nearly drove Steve young into law practice. 267-424-1 that’s something to hang y’all’s hats on. Go find a bigger numskull than Warren Sapp to make an argument.

  11. Buczilla Says:

Talking about needing just an above average qb this year to contend for a super bowl sure beats the hell out of wondering whether or not we have the talent to get to .500. It’s an awesome time to be a Bucs fan despite the Brady (non) drama.

  12. Bqen green Says:

What mods? You can’t say Warren Sapp is bankrupt literally and figuratively? Make sure to delete 267-422-1 also. Keep living on that generation ago title to justify decades of bad ownership and bad management

  13. Ron says Says:

Brady brought a focus to the team just as our defense did when we won the first super bowl it is a calmness that allows the players to relax and focus on the task at hand a lot of times it is referred to as slowing the game down. Champions have this quality to not let the pressure and distractions affect them, we actually had a great example of this in the Jets game of 2 different types of players one who is a great player and one who is very gifted but not a champion when we were down AB focus on his self and his stress and pressure while Brady and Gronk and the rest of the team focus on the game and won it against tremendous odds. Even without Brady we still have a nucleus of a championship team, but we need to find a catalyst through players and scheme to have a chance.

  14. Winny Testaverde Says:

Win one with a Brad Johnson type ( who I like and appreciate ) ? Joe must be floating in a Big Storm Beer vat Homer Simpson style. It was lightening in a bottle with Brady…and it finally broke with an assist to Todd Bowles. Just like it was the Rams year this year ( and boy was that painful ). Drew Arizona opening round at home…who were one of the worst teams in the league by seasons end. Didn’t have to go to Lambeau…didn’t have to play the Chiefs in the SB and caught the Bucs napping for 3+ quarters ( but won fair & square ). I think the Bucs take a big step back in 2022…

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We do have to keep in mind that our Bucs have two Super Bowl Wins……only one for the Saints, none for Falcons or Panthers.
4 teams have never been…..12 have never won….and many have won only one.
It’s been since 2014 when the Seahawks won that there was a first-time winner.
The Bengals waited 33 years since their last Super Bowl to win their first and came up short.

So….we don’t have a lot to whine about……we may not win another in my lifetime….but hopefully in yours.

  16. BelleGladeBuc Says:

Here’s what Brady has to think about.

If the Bucs reload with most of their free agents, acquire Watson from the Texans and win the Super Bowl with basically the same team minus TB12, then that greatly diminishes TB12’s accomplishments with the Bucs.

If another QB can replicate the same success with the same team that TB12 did, then TB12 wasn’t the reason for the team’s success.

The narrative then becomes TB12 was just a plug and play system QB.

  17. SB Says:

How easily some forget TBBF! Well said sir. Some cant see the forest because of all those pesky trees. Those of us that have been here since the beginning are enjoying the ride. The sky ain’t falling for Me.

  18. PhxBucsFan Says:

    Well said TampaBaybucfan!

  20. Rod Munch Says:

I love Sapp, but give me a break. With Brady this defense blew the game. This defense isn’t winning anything, it’s not 2002. You put Derek Carr as the starting QB and they’re 9-8 at best if they make the playoffs they’re losing in the first round. You put Trask in next year, they’re going 3-14.

Brady is the GOAT for a reason, and it’s unbelievable that anyone would think this team is going to win a SB with Jimmy G-level replacement. LOL!

  21. destinjohnny Says:

We had the talent to win 4 Warren but not the heart

  22. gotbbucs Says:

He’s not coming back, so the last two years are in the rear view now. Fun memories, but that chapter is over.
Next year’s team will obviously look different. I won’t make any judgements until I see what they can accomplish in free agency, and then we’ll see how the draft unfolds.
We’re back to not being totally sure how this team will do, and I’m fine with that. The last two years were a bit of a dream, back to reality.

  23. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    Had a better D back in 2003.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

Cobraboy … ‘if Brady, for whatever reason, doesn’t want to be a Buc, do we really want him at QB?’

Was wondering the same thing Cobra, but there are other possibilities. IF the Bucs refused to trade his 2022 rights, Brady could simply not un-retire. OR if he wants to play for someone else, the Bucs may parlay transferring his rights into a very nice trade. Fat is IMO that Brady is in complete charge of the dialogue right now. He’s retired; all these rumors swirling around him are just that … rumors. Well, or made-up speculation with no basis in fact.

In any event, Sapp is right IMO; we won a Super Bowl without him. That year a very strong defense coupled with an adequate offense prevailed. It takes more than ‘an adequate defense’ (or offense) nowadays to win the championship IMO. BOTH sides of the ball need to play at a reasonably high level, although one side will probably always end up being somewhat stronger than the other.

  25. steele Says:

You won one without him. So what? Brady won 6 and 1 without YOU, #99.

And you won the one because you had Monte Kiffin, and because you played the Raiders, under Bill “this is the dumbest team in America” Callahan, who was still using the Chuckie offensive playbook, that Chuckie created, and that Chuckie and Monte uproariously knew better than Callahan did, and promptly destroyed all day. Good team, but one of the easiest SB win ever.

But I digress. It is an ugly situation if any Bucs fan is expecting a SB with the mess we’re looking right now. Uncertainty makes it all worse.

Want optimism? Throw out expectations and start over. A new QB can be fun. The draft can be fun. A completely new team can be fun.

  26. cmurda Says:

@TBBF. We are winning 3 more in your lifetime. Stop with that noise.

  27. Buc92’ Says:

Deshaun Watson would definitely win with this team , he’d love our Offense line

    GoBucs!

  28. Adrnagy Says:

    Steele.
He won one SB. Hes a HOF. Hes a buc.
Hes saying lets go … move forward. Brady made his decision. Lets make our future.

  29. Swampbuc Says:

Someone give Bqen Groin his thorazine back. What a toad. Belichik has done fabulous without Brady hasn’t he?

    Eat it, Puds fan.

  30. Christos Says:

Ok i get it that the Defense this year was not as good as last year and most of the blame for the loss goes to them and Bowles. But please stop with the comments about we can win a Superbowl with Bowles. Are you kidding me. You do remember that during our run for the Championship the Defense was the better side of our team against NO, GB and KC. You do remember the brilliance in Bowles gameplan in the Superbowl. I mean come on. Stop the nonsense. Yes this year Bowles has to share much of the blame but we won a Superbowl because of the Defense in large part.

  31. DrunkInYbor Says:

Thanks to Mr. Licht we still have a amazingly talented roster! I believe we will keep any of our own free agents. Brady might be gone but remember he’s 44. Could you imagine how unstoppable we would be with Josh Allen? Oh Evans and Godwin aren’t open I’ll run for 30 yards on and on I am absolutely aware we have many free agents I feel extremely confident in the Arians Licht combo. Time will tell

  32. Bosch Says:

We’ll need a different DC To have any chance of another championship. One that doesn’t check out in the playoffs.

  33. View from 132 Says:

That was when playing defense was legal.

  34. Swampbuc Says:

Dungy as Defensive Consultant. Maybe Todd’s Bowels just need some gentle, Christian encouragement to not go full retard during the most critical point of the season.

  35. Listnfrmafar Says:

Swamparse, Belichick just to the Pat’s to the PO’s with a rookie, BA couldn’t do it with Jamais a veteran.

  36. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

crazybuc with smartest dumb guy comment of the year, “we can’t win a SB with Bowles “. Well smart guy if you recollect the defense he crafted and put together in the playoffs last year did exactly that…………. helped us win the SB. You guys with your agenda of blaming him for that loss are ridiculous. The front line wasn’t getting enough pressure all game. What was he supposed to do sit back while guys were still getting open or send pressure?
