Falcons Owner Praised Todd Bowles’ Interview

Todd Bowles

Todd Bowles can’t seem to find another head coaching job.

It’s possible that teams are terrified by his four-year Jets tenure.

More likely, however, it’s because Bowles coaches defense rather than offense. Falcons owner Arthur Blank was on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio today talking about how it’s a quarterback league and owners want offensive gurus running their teams. He pointed to how the large majority of new coaches hired this season are playcallers.

Joe will add that defensive holdovers like Lovie Smith and Dennis Allen, who just got head coaching gigs, are retread head coaches that were promoted from within.

In a chat about minority hiring and Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy not finding a job, Blank noted how Bieniemy interviewed twice — and well — with the Falcons last year and was impressive, but the team went with Titans playcaller Arthur Smith.

Without being asked, Smith added with enthusiasm that Todd Bowles was an impressive interview for the Falcons’ gig last year. Blank said there were other candidates but Bowles was the only one he named. He also went on to praise Bowles’ work in Tampa.

It was interesting hearing Blank, a very influential and active owner, say that his billionaire brethren want offensive head coaches. And Joe had to share the Bowles take since it came out of the blue.

Joe wouldn’t bet on Bowles every being a head coach again.
