Tom Brady Discusses His Bad Rap With Late Hits

January 19th, 2022

Protection.

Joe has heard it. You have heard it. The zebras protect Bucs quarterback Tom Brady.

Back when Brady was with the Belicheats and he blew out his knee in 2008, it came on a low hit. The NFL almost overnight banned that type of hit on quarterbacks and it is commonly referred to in NFL circles as the “Tom Brady Rule” because, you know, how dare a defender hit Brady?

Brady seems irked that he has a reputation of being protected by refs. And leave it to no other than ChapStick Jim Gray to tee up Brady for this subject in Brady’s weekly saccharine-laced podcast, “Let’s Go,” also heard on various SiriusXM channels.

(One of the Joe’s has the discipline and patience to plow through this podcast weekly. The other Joe doesn’t have the tolerance to deal with ChapStick Gray and his wet-kiss questions for more than four minutes at a time and has to mentally elevate himself to real football talk on SiriusXM NFL Radio.)

“I don’t remember the last time I got a roughing the passer [call],” Brady said — though he did Sunday when he got blasted by Derek Barnett of the Eagles. “I don’t think I get them as much as people may think I get them.”

That doesn’t mean Brady doesn’t try, which Joe finds to be very smart and savvy.

As Joe told famed JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman during the game Sunday, Brady is like a basketball coach. The coach will hound and hound and bellyache to a referee all game with the hopes the ref becomes so sensitive to what the coach is hollering about, the coach gets the call eventually. Often at the end of a basketball game that (potential) possession could mean the difference in a win or a loss.

Joe doesn’t think what Brady does working the refs and what a basketball coach does is anything different. Even Brady admitted he might go overboard with this stunt.

You can watch and hear Brady’s full response to roughing the passer calls in the SiriusXM video below.

That hit on Brady this last weekend was a late hit. Problem I had was they were focusing on the low part, but the definition includes 2 steps past the ball out. Barnett took 2 steps before he hit Brady. I was sitting with Eagles fans at the game and they agreed it was a late hit. Barnett has a problem with that they told me.

  2. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Yes, that was a late hit on Brady, and glad they called the penalty.
But at least Barnett extended his hand, to help Brady get back up.
The Rams are well known for late hits on the QB.

  3. Bobby M. Says:

There will be intentional late hits on Brady….the Rams goal is to rattle him early and up the middle. The risk is they extend a drive for us and we convert it to points.

Today I learned Jim Gray is still alive.

Interesting roughing the penalty stats if you look it up. Brady has the 14th lowest percentage of roughing the passer penalties per game and 9th lowest per attempts in the NFL among QBs that have played 40 or more games since 2009. He has the 9th most roughing penalties but considering he has more than 1000 throws more than anyone else in the top 10, that is to be expected. Judging by the numbers alone, he doesn’t get roughing the passer penalties called for him. Hopefully Joe allows me to post this external link where people can look for themselves.

Really hope Fournette can play. Just keep the game close going into the 4th quarter and then unleash Brady magic.

  7. Lamarcus Says:

The entire league went soft. All QB are protected. Brady at 44 won’t be here if not for those new rules

    Idiaznet
Exactly. Broadcast was focused on low part and didn’t seem to notice he was 3 steps late.

  9. Robert Says:

the late hit on the returner was horrible…and helmet to helmet in front of a ref!!!!

    no call. WTF

  10. adam from ny Says:

do not even think about touching tom!

do not tap him on the shoulder!

don’t even think about blowing in his ear!

maybe wave to get his attention…

or hold up a protest type sign with bold lettering…

umm…….actually just do shirtless jumping jacks to maybe have him notice you from afar….

    just stay away

  11. adam from ny Says:

touch tommy…………………………deal with big red 🙂

  12. westernbuc Says:

Isn’t Larry Fitzgerald supposed to be on that show? Don’t think I’ve heard him once on there

  13. Oneilbuc Says:

Yall need to stop crying this is why to me Brady is not the goat he’s one of the all time great quarterbacks . You can’t keep making the game soft and give players goat status. The knock on LeBron James against Jordan is LeBron playing in a more softer NBA wich is true.. But for Brady that doesn’t matter he’s playing in a softer football he’s the goat !! Lol 😆 🤣!! And don’t tell me about Brady in the past because everyone knows back then the Patriots was a defense lead team!!

  14. Joe Says:

Brady at 44 won’t be here if not for those new rules

    That’s true!
