Todd Bowles Better Get Defense Tightened Up

January 9th, 2022

Bucs DC Todd Bowles.

Yeah, the Bucs began to pull away from the Stinking Panthers tonight. Still, that first half was scary.

This may come as a surprise to some of Joe’s readers, but it’s a safe bet teams the Bucs will face in the playoffs won’t be dreadful offenses like the Stinking Panthers or the lowlife Jets. And they surely won’t be coached by a Matt Rhule or a Mr. Clean clone.

So here are the three quarterbacks the Bucs defense faced on their opponents first drives of the last three games: pouty, washed-up Cam Newton, struggling rookie Zach Wilson and pathetic shell-shocked Sam Darnold.

Newton guided Carolina to a field goal. Wilson and Darnold engineered touchdown drives.

Any playoff quarterback the Bucs will face from here on out is going to be way better than those three. Trust Joe on this.

Now it will certainly help a lot if the Bucs can get back Jason Pierre-Paul, Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett and Lavonte David.

However, Bowles has to get his defense better prepared and playing sharper than what the Bucs have done against garbage teams and rotten quarterbacks the past three games.

Giving up points on the first drive in a playoff game(s) could doom the Bucs.

JPP and Shaq and LVD coming back is going to make all the difference. If they can stay healthy and stop the run and get the pass rush humming…. Sky is the limit.

What a great way for the Bucs to end the regular season. Now, serious football begins. GO BUCS !!!!

You can count on JPP and Barrett playing for us in the playoffs. I gave David 4
    50-50 on playing.

The Panthers are not that bad of an offense with Darnold, not saying they’re good, but they’re not terrible.

Also, if you believe Eagles fans, their offense is one of the worst in the NFL.

The issue is, missing all those LBs, and facing a running team, is a bad combo.

  15. Rod Munch Says:

With as frustrating as it was watching that game in the 1st half, on a lot of the plays you could point to backups as being the issue. Cam Gill was getting destroyed in the rushing game, and Minter was slow and not wrapping guys up. Trayon also didn’t do much, but I don’t recall him really screwing up either.

Now replace those guys, put JPP out there, is he getting faked out on the runs? Is David getting burned in coverage? Is Shaq a non-factor? Unlikely all three happen.

Just need to get everyone back healthy.

Also, if the Bucs did get everyone healthy, it would be the first time since the 1st quarter of opening day.

I think Jalen Hurts is better than Darnold or Newton. Not sure he is better than Wilson.

Then if we win, we get Dak in 2nd round and we already beat that team. I think we will match up well against them a 2nd time.

Man this D makes Brady earn his pay check. Good win, why do I have to check my blood pressure 7-10 times a game on defensive 3rd down plays?

  18. Show Me the TDs Says:

Britt can lay the lumber. We have a few defensive starters who are afraid of contact. Hopefully they will sacrifice their bodies in the playoffs.

  19. JimmyJack Says:

Shoutout to Jamal Dean who had a great game. But then he got hurt so my player of the game award goes to Gholston……possibly the most overlooked BUC of all time.

Mike gets the team MVP. Gholston was great but Mike was elite!!

Give Darnold a line and some time, he might be an above-decent NFL QB. In some respects, he reminds me of a young Mathew Stafford.

  21. Listnfrmafar Says:

Cobra, he is horrible, not the first lousy QB Bucs make look like pro bowler.

Reminds me of a less productive Winston, he’s streaky like Winston, can make every throw, look amazing at times, but will also make dumb mistakes. Today he made that perfect throw in the endzone, I mean that’s as good as a throw as you can make, but once they were down, he didn’t do anything to make it to make a game, where as with Winston, it would at least be close in the end.

Till he throws a pick six N O can keep him

A good team could have been three TDs up on the Bucs in that first half.
    Not good.

  25. Guinness8 Says:

Our defense over pursues. They play fast but uncontroled. Way to many missed tackle’s

  26. stpetebucsfan Says:

ONE thing can change all of this! If #45 rediscovers his game. That’s what is missing from this defense. We have been week right at the heart.

LVD returns healthy and things could change quickly…perhaps LVD can also help elevate #45’s game.
