Interesting Roster Move

January 13th, 2022

Bruce Arians dials up an old friend.

Joe normally doesn’t write about practice squad fodder because, well, those players really aren’t (yet) part of the Bucs team. Joe believes folks prefer to read about players that can get on the field, not guys who might get on the field.

And, Joe has found long ago, folks would rather read about someone like Tom Brady or Shaq Barrett over someone who may never take the field for the Bucs. Weird, yeah.

For the longest time, Joe always thought if not campaigned for the Bucs to sign former Cardinals speedster John Brown. He played for Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians in Arizona and played damn well. Joe always thought that would be a natural fit.

And Arians has shown a strong pattern of having Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to sign guys off the street who used to play for him The thought process is that the player already knows Arians’ offense and will be a seamless fit as opposed to a player learning the offense on the fly.

For the most part, that has worked out well.

And so this morning when the Bucs announced they signed Brown to the practice squad, the first thing that went through Joe’s mind was “Ah, ha!”

This also tells Joe that the Bucs are spooked with the injury to a receiver currently on the active roster. Could that be Breshad Perriman? Brown is like Perriman in that he is a designated speed demon ordered to take the top off the defense.

Perriman has a messed-up hip and was limited in practice yesterday. So perhaps that hip is worse off than the team is letting on?

Two years ago, Brown was a 1,000-yard receiver for Buffalo. He played two games each for Denver and Jacksonville this season without a catch. But as we have seen, the Bucs are pretty good at getting guys who garbage teams don’t want (Perriman) and making quality use of them.

This is a classic BA move. Bring in your guys. It says to me that the plan is speed. More weapons to create separation and keep the defenses honest. Look how much speed we have. Perriman, Grayson, Scooter, now Brown (Smokey). I like it. Wanted him several years ago, he’ll help out.

  2. Cobraboy Says:

More speed open up the middle.

Wanna bet Brown ends up active before long?

  3. Snook Says:

Doesn’t necessarily indicate they’re “spooked”. If you have the roster space available, why not bring in someone who you’re already familiar with? Plus, more than likely, we’ll have more hamstring injuries before this is over so might as well bring in more depth.

  4. Another J Says:

    I like this move.

  5. Francisco Guzman Says:

Tyler Johnson needs to step up. Perriman if he can give it a go. Need to run crisp precise routes. I think the knock on perriman was his lack of route running.

  6. Bird Says:

Can he still run? When did he last play?

I honestly think its grayson hammie for reason of signing

    Perriman plays.

  7. Swampbuc Says:

I like it. Tyler Johnson is not a speed guy, he’s a possession guy. Our speed guys are dinged (Perriman), unreliable (Darden) or Scotty.

So, yeah. Take the top off of it, JB!

  8. Swampbuc Says:

And I’d already forgotten about Grayson, also dinged.

  9. Casual Observer Says:

    Brown as a Buc WR?

  10. D-Rome Says:

This is a good signing. Hopefully the Bucs give him #81.

  11. Oxycodoms Says:

Damn what took so long shouldve happened after godwin went down, at latest after brown left

  12. bucschamp Says:

periman injured? i thought it was Grayson?

  13. Biff Barker Says:

Gotta love when a GM and HC trust each other. This signing is a good move!

  14. #8 Says:

    TD recipient #91 for TB12.

  15. Robert Says:

Me likes! and yes, give him AB’s number. -not the chef, number 81.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Perriman injured…..WTF we are losing multiple guys each game……WTF, WTF

  17. Beeej Says:

Always liked him with buffalo, looks like he the same age as ME13 too

  18. Richard Dekkers Says:

Did he get #81? That would save some fans and the backs some money!

  19. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

I like it. Just watched his highlights. He’s fast and fights for extra yards.

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

Really concerned about our banged-up Buc squad limping into these playoffs. This time last yr guys, we were hittin on all cylinders on the upswing. I hope not but it might be too much for us to overcome. The keys will be our pass rush and if we can get our running game going. Hope David and White can step up. This playoff run will be all uphill.

  21. R.O. Says:

Its not a roster move. Signed to the Practice squad. Not the 53.

  22. PassingThru Says:

    Shocker!

I never knew John Brown was respected south of the Mason-Dixon.

  23. Listnfrmafar Says:

Still don’t know why they didn’t look at Golden Tate. I am not familiar with this guy, I hope he is good. Brady’s head must be exploding. FYI, the Eagles have beaten the WFT twice and Saints, how did Bucs do?

  24. SlyPirate Says:

SPEED KILLS … in more ways than one.

    1. Having speedy receivers (who can catch) opens under routes and provides homerun ability.
    2. Putting guys into the lineup “too speedily” typically results in miscues (missed throws and INTs).

  25. KC Says:

Sounds like an insurance move for Grayson’s hamstring

  26. The Beer Whisperer Says:

I think, signing Brown is like buying insurance.
Hoping ya don’t need it, but happy you have it if something happens.

  27. The Beer Whisperer Says:

    Ooops, what KC said.

  28. PassingThru Says:

On a serious note, Brown has some versatility in that he can play outside or in the slot. I’m sure Arians and Leftwich are curious if he has anything left in the tank. He’s small and skinny, but perhaps he’s crafty enough to survive in the slot. That’s the biggest, glaring need.

  29. Snook Says:

Amazing that 3 years in and so many Bucs fans don’t realize that BA and Leftwich can’t use skinny and small WR in their slot WR role. Think Godwin and Fitzgerald if you need reference.

  30. '74 Bucs fan Says:

Isn’t this the guy that ran a sub 4.3 at the combine? Like a 4.1?

  31. JGhotier Says:

Mike Evans was super sniffly at yesterday’s PC too. Jus’ sayin’. I’ve watched Big Mike’s PC’s since he was a Buc and have never seen him sniffle that much. Just pointing it out and not assuming anything. Fingers crossed and knock on wood.

  32. Biff Barker Says:

Agree on needing a speedy slot guy. Scotty’s not durable enough.

  33. gp Says:

Connecting with a speedster on a deep route requires precise timing. If he can play the slot he will be able to contribute much sooner

  34. Swampbuc Says:

Looks like Buffalo used him more in a possession role in 2019. Regardless if the Bucs can squeeze something out of John Brown at this stage, all the more reason for the Legend of JL and BA to continue growing to new levels of excellence.

  35. unbelievable Says:

It’s either b/c of Perriman or Grayson, IMO.

  36. Francisco Guzman Says:

Unbelievable i think it’s grayson. When did perriman get injured? I just hope Grayson can heal quickly.

  37. Joe Says:

Did he get #81? That would save some fans and the backs some money!

    Awesome!

  38. David Says:

This could definitely be a good signing. Hopefully it is about Grayson being injured and not Perriman

  39. Navfree17 Says:

    ListenFar:

Cool story. We have beaten the Eagles this year….

  40. David Says:

    DEKKERS.

    HA! That’s pretty funny.
As you walk in the stadium with that jersey, the Bucs should offer a Velcro “J” to stick on the jersey before “Brown”

How does that feel Antonio? Does it make your ankle sore?

  41. adam from ny Says:

    wow…this says a lot…a whole lot…

it’s scotty time now, but obviously BA and tom do not trust or believe in scotty at all…not sure what happened but scotty literally fell out of the rotation – maybe they think a db will pop him super hard and jar the ball loose – who knows…but even when scotty did get plays last week it was as a running back – no really as a receiver…so for whatever reason they no longer believe in scotty at all as a pass catcher – but won’t tell the fans or media…

tyler is looking slower and slower as the season wears on…he looks much slower than godwin in realtime on the field…

and perriman really doesn’t run great routes at all…

    good signing

  42. adam from ny Says:

i swear i was thinking about this dude in passing the other day…

like where is he?…why did we never sign him?…

BA read my mind – that’s one telepathic dude, that coach

  43. Pickgrin Says:

8 years ago at the combine this guy ran an official 4.34 – 40

  44. Joe Says:

Still don’t know why they didn’t look at Golden Tate.

Tate’s sort of an a-hole, isn’t he? And look what the Bucs went through recently on that end. So guessing the Bucs didn’t want to bring in any more drama to start the playoffs.

  45. Bucsforlife Says:

Interesting I thought both Bob Marley and Eric Clapton shot him down

  46. Swampbuc Says:

Dude I’m a little slow on the uptake.

    Genius!

  47. steele Says:

Good move. Best fit among “off the street” options.

  48. Wild Bill Says:

I am guessing that they think they don’t need Brown to beat Philly. He needs some study time to know the buc offense and time to work out with Brady. He should be ready if the Bucs beat Philly. A week and a half should be enough .
