Good Time For Devin White To Reappear (Video)

January 14th, 2022

Need the old Devin White.

Bucs inside linebacker Devin White just hasn’t been himself in the 2021 season.

While this is only White’s third season, Joe thinks it is safe to say it’s his worst. The way he played in the postseason last winter, White appeared to be on the cusp of planting his flag at midfield as one of the best linebackers in the game.

Something happened since and Joe isn’t sure what it is. Joe isn’t sure if White is hurt, worn out, or if the Bucs have him doing so many other things because of injuries to the defense, he’s spread too thin covering too much real state.

Some may even suggest he’s overplaying plays in an effort to compensate. Joe is almost to the point of believing White is lost without Lavonte David.

White, in the first Bucs’ game against the Eagles back in October, only had five tackles but it wasn’t like the Eagles were running away from White.

In a video compiled by former NFL offensive lineman Brian Baldinger for his Twitter account, the NFL Network talking head was showing various run plays the Eagles used successfully on the Bucs. Included in the plays are two in which Eagles Pro Bowl center Jason Kelce owned White. In one, Kelce just bullrushes White back damn near 15 yards.

Shed a block, son!

The video also shows how Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is a liability against the run, though he has improved.

If the Bucs hope to bottle up the Eagles’ run game on Sunday, White must return to his normal self. And his normal self isn’t getting bullrushed 15 yards downfield.

Of course Joe hopes Lavonte David can play. It’s iffy. One thing that is expected, however, is that Eagles Pro Bowl right tackle Lane Johnson will play. He missed the Bucs game in October.

In the last three games playing against two garbage teams, White has a total of 10 tackles. That’s almost unheard of from a star inside linebacker. The Bucs truly need White to snap out of whatever funk he is in.

Do you just cut and paste the same article 5 -10 times? This is getting old. How about some football insight on out beloved Bucs that we didn’t know months ago.

  2. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I think Devin White will have a good game, because a lot of our players are back!
Especially Leonard Fournette! Yes, I know Fournette is a running back, and White is a Linebacker. But, they are both from LSU, and like to hurt people!

  3. SB~LV Says:

    Box of rocks

  4. csidedave Says:

It was very disappointing to see Sam Darnold juke him and then blow by him and leave him in the dust a few times. I don’t know what’s up but Devin couldn’t run him down.

Joe … ‘Included in the plays are two in which Eagles Pro Bowl center Jason Kelce owned White. In one, Kelce just bullrushes White back damn near 15 yards. Shed a block, son!’

Uhhh, let’s see. Jason Kelce is a 3-time 1st-Team All-Pro who goes 6’3″ & 295 lbs; he’s a beast who’s feasted for 11 yrs in the NFL. Devin White goes 6’0″ & 237 lbs. But ya, if Kelce bullrushes you, just shed the block & make the tackle Devin. Piece of cake.

Got a hunch that Eagles are the #1 rushing team in the NFL for a reason. And that reason usually starts with the beasts in the trenches. Probably also a reason why Bucs are the third hardest to run against in the NFL. We’ve got a few beasts of our own. May the best beasts win.

  6. PassingThru Says:

    It is what it is.

Devin White had trouble shedding blocks last season as well. This season it seems worse, plus I think he’s been forced to cover more east-west territory in addition to his role of north-south coverage. That’s what happens when you’re missing your starting OLBs.

Tryon-Shoyinka has problems reading the offense after the snap. He charges in like the Light Brigade, the hell with what is going on in front or around him. Blockers use his speed against him by redirecting him with a chip block or push, taking him out of both a running play or attempt to rush the passer. He’s still All Rookie, and I don’t mean that in the positive sense.

  7. LVMYBUCS Says:

I’ve watched Joe Tryon-Shoyinka he ain’t no JPP just yet and he takes a lot of bad routes to the QB. He will chase the QB to the ends of the earth unlike JPP. I would really like to see him put his hands up more like JPP does and block the pass especially when there is no chance of him getting to the QB.

  8. PanhandleBuc Says:

He needs to stop horsing around and bring that fire from last year! If he wants to be the leader of this D, show up!!

  9. Joe Says:

If the video above with analysis from an 11-year NFL vet isn’t “insight” than Joe doesn’t know what “insight” is.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

White has too much pride…is too talented not to return to spectacular play……I strongly suspect the the falloff is caused by the Shaq,JPP, LVD absences. On 12/19 vs the Saints White had 8 tackles…..LVD had 11….

  11. Cobraboy Says:

Well, if that happens again, faces will be long on Buc Loyalists everywhere.

Once again, the key is turnovers and line play.

  12. DG060 Says:

How do we know that this isn’t the REAL DW
and last year was the fluke?

  13. Bobby M. Says:

I think its a combination of not having JPP and David….JTS being a liability….trying to do too much. I think White bounces back with those guys returning and can play more of his traditional role.

  14. Tackleblockwin Says:

Well at least the Bucs have a lot of film now of the Eagles running the ball. I trust Todd Bowles and the D to do better this time.

  15. GABucsFan Says:

Baldinger‘s analysis is always spot on. Eagles offense o-line owned our d-line in the second half of the previous game. Linebackers will be the key to winning this game. If LD can’t make it, Minter has to have his best game ever.

  16. Lesko_Brandon Says:

Devin’s play right now is like he is Vannah White. 🤣🤣

  17. Lamarcus Says:

Stop it. D White is an average Linebacker. Right now, his potential ceiling is that of Barret Ruud. I think Ruud was better at this point of their careers.

  18. Biff Barker Says:

A wet, windy and muddy game is the kind DW was built for. He won’t a be dropping back into coverage and has the speed to contain Hurts.
    Probably wishful thinking?

  19. Dyno-White ! # 45 Says:

Yes, show me the TD , this is reported often. It is reported often because the middle linebackers might be the difference between winning a playoff game or a one and done. I think we are seeing why I believe that Lavonte was on the all decade team for the 2010s. Of course that meant 1 Pro Bowl. We need some divine healing !

As you can tell by my moniker, I think DW has the talent to be the next Derrick Brooks. Right now, he’s temporarily more like Forrest Brooks.

  20. Franco Says:

    Don’t forget about, Nelson 👍🏼

  21. Show Me the TDs Says:

Joe, OK, but most of the article is word for word from another article. It is deja vu all over again. You frequently use the term “lazy journalism”. Seems a little hypocritical.

  22. Show Me the TDs Says:

Dyno, yeah I also like White a lot and pull for for him. He can be great and is a critical component of a SB run. He might be playing poorly right now for any of the reasons Joe has laid out in 15 articles. They’re all the same. From what I have seen, DW seems a little immature. That’s not a knock on him. He’s young. Hopefully he realizes the greatness within himself.

  23. unbelievable Says:

I see White and Minter getting abused over and over. Though as DR pointed, Kelce on White is a massive mismatch.

I also see Suh and Vea getting handled pretty well, and Shaq and JTS running around aimlessly.

Oh, and Hurts looks faster than every single guy we have on defense…

Buckle up Bucs fans, this game will be closer than you think.

  24. Bob in valrico Says:

I spied no. 51 in that footage, Was LVD out of that game? also.?

  25. Robert Says:

Devin White is getting swallowed by O-linemen this season. You can see it in every game.

  26. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

The true Devin White has come out. He has 10 other players around him but needs one so he can play better? ROJO looked great in college now look at him. Devin’s talent is smoke and mirrors when LVD isn’t on the field.

  27. Tim R. Says:

If you think that Devin White will not return to his normal form of play then shame on you. His performance will pick up. If players return this week from their injuries number 45 is going to show everyone that he is still a very good linebacker. He is going to make some of you realize this. The number of defensive injuries the Bucs have had will have an affect on many players. Play hard Devin and this will show many that you are the same as ever. Go Buccaneers.
