Bucs Will Need Defense To Step Up

January 20th, 2022

NFL Network’s Excel queen.

Cynthia Frelund was playing with numbers again. But this time they actually seem to make sense.

Frelund, NFL Network’s stats queen, ran some numbers and came out with examples of the good and bad of Bucs quarterback Tom Brady playing behind a line that featured a hobbled Ryan Jensen and no Tristan Wirfs.

Basically, if Brady was pressured, he usually went down on Sunday. But he if threw quick, short passes, he was deadly, Frelund typed.

The uncertainty up front doesn’t bode well for Tom Brady, who was sacked on four of the six dropbacks in which he was pressured last week against the Eagles. To Brady’s credit, he helped mitigate Philly’s pass rush, and the injuries up front, by eschewing the deep ball (attempted just one all game) for quick and short passes:

Less than 2.5 seconds to throw: 22 of 28, 179 yards, 1 TD.
Passes of less than 10 air yards: 25 of 31, 184 yards, 1 TD.

Frelund believes the Bucs’ best chances, if Wirfs cannot play and the Rams mount a massive pass rush, will be by throwing short passes, which are a Brady strength. However, that comes with risk, Frelund noted. The Bucs cannot fall behind. If they do, playing dink and dunk is like running uphill to get back in the game.

Joe and Frelund agree in thinking the game will be decided largely on the Bucs’ defense and its ability to keep the Rams out of the end zone.

I agree strictly with the notion that if the Buccaneers fall behind early, it’ll be difficult to get back into it. Defense gotta be sharp out of the gate, and offense needs to score twice early.

  2. Bird Says:

Go back and watch game. 3 sacks in first half were jailbreaks and brady just took his medicine (the sack) instead of forcing potential pick. And 2 of 3 were when wells and wirfs legs gave out cause of injury

    You know jensen playing
I hope one of other two can be healthy enough and not be liability

Have mike in slot running quick routes too from
    Time to time

  3. Craig Says:

The Bucs will need to vary their attack, but not try to take more than the Rams defense gives them.

They also do need to rely on their defense, specially, defensive turnovers. The Bucs need to capitalize on every one of those.

    This should be a great game!!! Best team moves on!! GO BUCS!;

  5. DG060 Says:

Somebody up there does NOT want the Bucs to repeat. The injuries never end this year.
Absolutely amazing they’re 14-4 so far.

  6. DBS Says:

I agree. We need to get up 2 scores and stay up. No falling behind and trying to play catch up.

Been saying all week, If our Defense does not show up and show out? we will lose this game. Gotta put mega pressure on Stafford like we did against KC in the superbowl. If we don’t? Cooper cup will have a field day because yes, he is the man. Maybe the best this year. As for the Butter face comment here. All I need is a little syrup to go with it. Does not bother me in the slightest.

They have to come out running the ball like crazy!! Run run run run… Get the Rams thinking about the run every play so they can’t just pin their ears back… If they come out pass happy and the Rams decide to go hard at the QB then the bucs will lose badly!! By like 20 points!!… They have to run!! Run Bernard, run fornette or rojo if their available, run Vaughn, run Bell RUN EVERYONE!! Scotty on short screens …. Run them all!!…. I would spend the first quarter running at a 75% rate!!! The Rams will be expecting them to rely on Brady!! Then after they are worried about the run start the play action passes and go deep to Evans!! The Rams can’t cover the deep ball very well ….. This is going to have to be a slow moving game that the defense will have to keep it a low scoring game!! If they get into a shoot out with their key o-line players not 100% then this game will be over before it starts!!

They did great against the eagles. They gave up two TDs in garbage time. It was garbage time when they actually started scoring

  13. unbelievable Says:

Yup this is what I said yesterday. The keys to the Bucs winning this game are:

    – Move the chains / score early (before Brady takes a big hit)

    – Run the ball / play action / screens to neutralize their pass rush

    – Stop Akers early

(And IMO, please stop with the quick out WR “screens” to the sidelines behind the LOS. They’ve almost been picked off multiple times. We just don’t look fluid when we run them)

  14. unbelievable Says:

    Defense has to ball out.

    Offense is depleted.

  15. Francisco Guzman Says:

Defense has to get a pass rush and these corners have to play physical. They have to play physical on both sides. You can’t play finesse against this team.

  16. Show Me the TDs Says:

Since TB obviously didn’t complete passes when he was sacked, I would be curious as to how long it took the sacker to reach the sackee.

  17. Colonel Angus Says:

After an all nighter in looking at the numbers, compiling the stats and tendencies of the Bucs and Rams, I have come to this conclusion…..as long as the Bucs have 1 more point than the Rams, when the clock reads 0:00 at the end of the 4th quarter, we shall be victorious. I need some of you stat nerds to verify this.

  18. Purplepirate Says:

“They did great against the eagles”

Yeah, but it was the eagles. And it’s not so much that they did great , it’s that Hurts isn’t very good. Stafford won’t miss the open guys Hurts never saw.
