“A Lot Of Zone Coverage”

January 19th, 2022

“Sean, wait till you see what I got for The Goat, and things of that nature.”

It’s savvy Tom Brady versus defensive guru Raheem Morris.

Who ya got?

Raheem, the former Tampa Bay head coach (2009-2011), is the Rams’ first-year defensive coordinator after holding that role with the Falcons last year.

The good news is the Bucs and Tom Brady are very familiar with Raheem’s defense. Bucco Bruce Arians already mentioned that this week. And even better news is that Joe would bet on Brady every time when he gets a second in-season look at a defense. (Joe considers whatever the Saints due to Brady to be Voodoo- or UFO-related).

Joe asked Mike Evans today about his eight-catch, 106-yard day against the Rams in Week 3 and what he recalled about it.

Evans said the Rams ran “a lot of zone coverage” and star Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey didn’t follow him all game like he did when the teams met in 2020. Evans said he expects Ramsey to cover him at times but noted Los Angeles is using Ramsey differently this season.

Joe sure hopes the Rams go back to “a lot of zone coverage.” Brady did carve up the Rams for 432 yards and a touchdown, but too much of that was in garbage time after the Rams got up 31-14 late in the third quarter.

If the Bucs can avoid another slow start — and they’ve been great about that at home — Joe will be very confident that Brady will surgically pick apart the Rams defense, much like Jimmy Garoppolo did in Week 18 and how Aaron Rodgers got it done on Thanksgiving weekend.

I believe. Imo. Brate will have a monster game.

  2. Adrnagy Says:

I Feel good about this game for one reason. – our defense. Everyone is talking about rams offense and defense. And our oline.
If our defense dominates. Stafford will think hes playing for the lions.

  3. Bird Says:

Thing is brady does not roll out like those guys

But brady compensates by getting out in less then 2.5. So wonder if they will try and jam our receivers at line of scrimmage so brady has to hold onto longer. Cmon wirfs. Cmon Jensen who i am pretty sure will play

Leftwich and brady are probably holding 2 a days on scheme
Glad their safeties are banged up / without guys

  4. Bird Says:

    Adr nagy

Yup. Defense needs to play like they have in playoffs last 2 years
Not so much like in regular season

  5. Francisco Guzman Says:

Need other wideouts to step up. I been waiting on Tyler Johnson to be thay slot guy. He was a very good college player.

  6. Buc4evr Says:

Rams seem to run a combination of man underneath and zone further down the field. The key is keeping Brady upright.

  7. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I will take Brady vs Raheem’s defense IF HE HAS TIME !
We must game plan to negate their pass rush, especially if 2 of our starters are down.
Running the ball, screens, and quick passes are the way we will negate their pass rush.
If we win Sunday, and San Francisco beats the Packers, then guess what ?
We will become the number one seed, and the 49ers will have to come to Tampa to play us!

  8. LostDecadeSurvivor Says:

The defense is likely feeling some type of way about not being mentioned. LVD and Shaq off snap count, should be coming out with something to prove.

  9. ModHairKen Says:

Rams whipped the Bucs fannies. But the game was on the road. And it was the beginning of the season. Rams are feeling high and mighty after Cardinals win. At home. And with that Jameis-like performance by the overrated Kyler Murray.

But Lord, the Rams have talent on Defense. Donald, Jalen, Von.

This is what makes it fun. Anyone who thinks they know what is going to happen is FOS.

  10. David Crum Says:

Brady is older than all three opposing head coaches left in the NFC.

    I’ll take Brady

  11. Adrnagy Says:

Week 3 defense was banged up. This week we healthy and we know it. Pay back time.
Morris will break. Stafford is not brady to break down a defense. A WHOLE different defense stafford will face.

  12. Winny Testaverde Says:

I think I almost like Sean Payron more than I do Sean McVay…almost. Giddy lil’ duffer running up and down the sidelines…the chest bumps and high 5’s…there video of him kissing Belichick’s berries before their Super Bowl…basically conceding the game with his fanboy fawning.

  13. Swampbuc Says:

Someone has to block for him. Four sacks against the Eagles – too many.

  14. Lesko_Brandon Says:

If our OL can give Brady at least 3 seconds at a minimun to hold the line, BUCS will be fine.

  15. SlyPirate Says:

The Bucs have weapons as long as protection holds. Look for heavy packages.

The BIG QUESTION … How do the Bucs slow down Kupp?

  16. Nutbucer Says:

    We need Lenny!!

  17. Leighroy Says:

Think Raheem will be patrolling South Howard like the good ol days Saturday night?

  18. HeyItsAdam Says:

If the Bucs have no answer for BLAHeem , I’m gonna be disappointed.

  19. unbelievable Says:

    Keys to a Bucs win:

    – Score early

    – Shut down Akers early

    – Neutralize their pass rush w/ run game, play action, screens

(And, IMO, don’t throw those sideline quick out / screens behind the LOS… several have nearly been intercepted this season. We just don’t look fluid when we run them. )

  20. Sheen Says:

I’m pretty sure I recall JPP saying “we’ll see their azz again” after that 1st Rams game…let’s just hope the Bucs still have a bad taste in their mouth and the Rams think they can just bully us in the playoffs much like NO thought they could last year.

  21. Eckwood Says:

Great game for an Oj Howard break out ….. I would be sure Fells is active and run some four tight end sets and T end motion , crashing the d ends the whole first quarter ……. The T E sets also play against the corner strength and can abuse the safeties !!!

  22. Joe Says:

Great game for an Oj Howard break out

Seriously? Who really believes this? And why would Howard in the final week(s) of his contract suddenly decide now would be the time to break out?

    Turn the page.
