“Tom Brady Is Making The Calls, Alright? He’s Making The Decisions.”

December 25th, 2021

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles.

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles was not in the Christmas mood when he broke down the travesty that was the “Apocolypse Before Christmas” from last Sunday.

Taking to his podcast “In the Trenches,” Beckles, a popular local sports radio personality, pinned the loss on a horrible gameplan by the coaches and, perhaps, Tom Brady showing his age.

“We looked putrid offensively and putrid is being nice,” Beckles said. “It’s a whole lot of dinking and dunking to [Leonard] Fournette, isn’t it? For a team with that much firepower, lot of Fournette for two yards.”

Beckles blasted the gameplan, but when it comes to decisions on the field, he says that’s No. 12.

“Tom Brady is making the calls, alright?” Beckles said. “He’s making the decisions.”

Beckles said for the first time since he was drafted by the Bucs last year, right tackle Tristan Wirfs had a bad game. And he pointed a finger at coaches for hanging Wirfs out to dry.

“Tristan Wirfs had an off game,” Beckles began. “Why? Cause Cam Jordan was rushing [the passer] all game long. If you have to pass block on Cam Jordan 40 times, I’ll be damned if he doesn’t beat you once or twice or three times.”

Rather than being pass-happy, Beckles wanted the Bucs to the ball on the ground to take away the slimy Saints’ pass rush. Beckles mentioned running 30 times in a December game “tenderizes” the defense and slows down a pass rush.

In short, Beckles said the slimy Saints “came in and b!tch-slapped” the Bucs in their own crib on national TV.

Other Beckles thoughts:

On Joe Tryon-Shoyinka:

“I’m finally seeing some good stuff. (Beckles said he doesn’t care about JTS running across a field and making a tackle — “I don’t care about that. That’s not football.”) What Beckles does care about is how JTS battles in the trenches. “I want to see how he hand-fights with tackles. I want him to beat tackles. I saw a couple of good things but he’s not physical enough still. … But I’m seeing some good things from the kid.”

On Ronald Jones:

“We need him to be the man again.”

On Tom Brady:

“He has not been playing that well. He put some beautiful balls up, that’s Tom Brady. He’s going to do that thing. That interception at the end of the game — horrible. Tom Brady has not been playing that great. When you get old, you start to get old gradually. He may have started to get old in front of us. That’s a possibility. I’m not saying that’s happening because he can go out [Sunday] and throw for 400 yards. That’s a possibility. But when I see him running, fumbling, late interceptions, that’s not Tom Brady. That’s not the Tom Brady that we like to see.”

On the defense:

“I loved what I saw from our defense. It’s just a shame that was in a loss and all for naught.”

Beckles added that this loss should refocus the Bucs on how to prepare for January (and February?) football:

“Now we can stop talking about homefield advantage and start playing some good football. … If you get beat by Trevor Siemian and Taysom Hill, you don’t deserve to play at home in the playoffs.”

Beckles added the way the NFL has been this year, he wouldn’t be shocked if the Bucs lose two of their next three games. Beckles emphasized that is no knock on the Bucs, it’s just that bad teams have risen up on good teams so often this season across the league.

    – if Bucs had done that, we’re probably talking about a close win.

  3. Bbro Says:

    Nice Red 👍

  4. Kentucky Buc Says:

Or maybe not drop a dozen balls.

  5. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Way too many empty backfield sets in the Saints game.
With no threat of a Run, it allowed the Saints to tee off and go after Brady.

  6. Mike Says:

Bucs need to get back to pounding the rock and the play action game. They will be alright.

  7. Bojim Says:

Hate the reminders of being embarrassed on national television. BA, BL and TB were lost. Need a strong win tomorrow. Don’t care too much about the last two except for getting the backups some time.

  8. Eddie Marz Says:

I agree with Beckles on one thing. We could play better, a lot better. GOBUCS!

  9. Listnfrmafar Says:

Who is this guy? Another arm chair media QB. A broken down TE that no one knows?

  10. BigMacAttack Says:

Taysom Hill and his offense didn’t beat the Bucs, the Saint’s defense clobbered the Bucs and our Coaches had no answer for them. It is what it is but the Saint’s defense rose to the occasion. The Bucs won’t lose 2 more games before the playoffs. They won’t lose any.

  11. Ben green Says:

Take away his weapons, and Brady is very pedestrian. His inability to work with less talented recievers has been a problem for a long while. He had no interest in working with, or helping to develop anyone in NE. Brady has his guys, and treats 3rd and 4th string recievers like mushrooms, keep em in the dark and feed them poo. It’s the one serious flaw in his extraordinary career. I don’t wanna see it end in Tampa the way it did in NE, Tom throwing bad interceptions to nobodys

  12. George Says:

Beckles now thats a name headed toward Canton ! Everyone one is a Monday morning QB and he seems like one. The only way sports reporters make news is when they knock a star . Stick to what you are good NOTHING !

  13. Brandon Says:

Beckles is 100% right. Zero passes in the last two first quarters played… not a coincidence that we’ve also only scored six points in the last seven quarters. Our biggest problems are the egos of Arians, Leftwich, and Brady. They want to show the world what geniuses they are by not ever running the ball or being a balanced offense. This is bad football and it starts with the playcalling.

  14. DoooshLaRue Says:

I agree with pretty much everything he said.
If TB made the decisions to go long on 3-4th and short he’s an idiot.

  15. Roy T. Buford Says:

Brady does not participate in one of the practices for each week, and it’s quite likely his prep is geared with getting the 1s ready, not the backups. This week though, he’s had to work more with the second teamers and I’d bet all will be ready. If Beckles is saying Brady is actually calling the plays, that looks like plain nonsense to me. And I’d put Brady’s analysis of what is wrong and how to fix ahead of the vulgar horse-petting Beckles any day…as well as the BL the overrated OC. I could agree Brady going for the big gain option on a given play instead of the shorter option could be some of it, but I again put it back on game plan and what I just said. If we see another offensive clunker this weekend, we can open it back up for consideration it may be age showing. But I doubt it. As for the D’s effort being wasted, that is nonsense also. They NEED to start turning in consistently good games from here on out.

  16. alton d green Says:

Ben Ben Ben. I’ve watched Tom for 21 yrs turn receivers into stars as well as carry subpar defenses all the way to the SB. But then again Tommy Boy doesn’t have Bilichick and McDaniels (offensive co-ordninator). I honestly don’t know one player that left NE and played like a star. Can y’all??

  17. Cobraboy Says:

    Poor ben verde.

Still bu++hurt over Tom Terrific jilting him at the altar.

That said, seriously, you know what actual Bucs’ fans like about you, ben?

    Not a gawddamm thing.

  18. alton d green Says:

I’ll tell ya what would help. Make all the receivers and backs carry a 25 lb. football around their necks all week. Then maybe they will catch the damn ball. And take those freak’n gloves off so that you will know what a football feels like. as far as the bomb on 4th and 1, I can only think of one call that was dumber. Seattle throwing a pass on 2nd and 2 in the SB against the Pats when they had a freight train for a running back. Gave the SB to NE. THANK YOU hahahaha

  19. Darin Says:

If he loved what he saw from the bucs D against that qb then the Saints D must have had the best performance he’s ever seen.

  20. Ben green Says:

Alton, Troy brown, was one of the best slot recievers in history, Wes welker was no slouch himself, he went on to have success with Peyton Manning. Gronk is simply the best tight end to ever play, and would’ve been dominant with almost any qb. Jules could get open on nearly every play. Randy moss, are you kidding me. Making it appear that Brady went to Superbowls with a bunch of no names is disingenuous at best. The first 3 titles were won on defense, and the last 3 Brady had plenty to work with

  21. Ben green Says:

The reason no wr left ne, and had success says more about bill being unable to draft recievers. He just doesn’t value the position, and when he does he can’t hit on them. Harry, Tompkins, Boyce. Those the last three recievers he spent fairly high picks on. Bill famously compared some stiff to Julio Jones

  22. Ben green Says:

The 2014 defense was loaded with talent

  23. Sparky Says:

Ben, you ‘ve stopped quoting imaginary sources for your BS at least! Next, stop making things up altogether. It’s okay to have terrible opinions, lord know there are a lot of those on this site, just stop pretending you have inside knowledge. It could be your New Years resolution.

  24. Listnfrmafar Says:

Ben, I have watched Brady his entire career in NE. You have no idea what your saying. Wes Welker was a 2 or 3 receiver at Miami, Brady made him a super star, same for Edelman, Dion Sanders, Chris Hogan, Amandola, David Patton, Donte Stallworth, David Givens and the rest you would know, they fell off the face of the earth. The only one that did anything was Welker and he was nothing compared to what he was in NE. Brady does work with second tier receiver that want to put in the work and those that don’t he has no time for them. To the rest of you fair weather fans that trash Brady every time the Bucs fail, remember he is 25 & 9 as.Buc, got you a SB and soon the NFC South Championship and possibly another SB. You don’t like his production, petition to BA.to start Trask. Oh, he.makes $25 mil half of what he should be making. Dip Shats!!!

  25. Listnfrmafar Says:

Oh, I forgot Gronk is on that list.

  26. Joe Says:

    Who is this guy?

    Google is your friend.

  27. Oneilbuc Says:

Listnfrmafar again football is a team sport what happened last week without his starters? BEN GREEN NAME ME 1 BAD DEFENSE BRADY PLAYED WITH?? NAME 1 ARVGAGE DEFENSE THE PATRIOTS WON A SUPERBOWL WITH?? BRADY PLAYED WITH GREAT DEFENSES IN NEW ENGLAND THAT HE WON SUPERBOWLS WITH ? NAME 1 10TH OR 15 RANKED DEFENSE BRADY PLAYED WITH AND WON A SUPERBOWL WITH?? HIS SUPERBOWL DEFENSES WERE ALL RANKED TOP 5 IN SCORING?? NAME ONE DEFENSE THAT WAS LOWER THAN THAT IN SCORING? BELICHICK IS THE GREATEST COACH OF ALL TIME!!

  28. Listnfrmafar Says:

Dion Branch, not Sanders, even I forgot his name. Oneilbucyall no idea this conversation about Belichick came about. All I know his first season without Brady he went 7-9 and Brady came to Bucs a LOSING franchise and changed the dynamics and led them to a SB. I Don’t why I argue with you, you’re a Saints/Jamais fan. You only post when the offense struggles so you can trash Brady. Take out your crying towel, he’s about to give you the NGC South title and possibly another SB. A lot of short memories out there, BA’s.offensive tag line is “NO Risk It No Biscuit,” so when he throws.down the field on 3&2 or 4th&1 that shouldn’t be a surprise. The hypocrisy is hilarious. Why doesn’t he throw to Evan’s downfield more then in your next breath pound the rock more, which is it?

  29. Oneilbuc Says:

Listnfrmafar . You only a Brady fan sure Brady is a great quarterback and a hall of famer. I’ve never said we wasn’t but all you do is ride Brady jock and down grade our team. Brady is not bigger than the team like you try to make him. You hate giving Belichick credit even though he went to your Patriots with 2 rings before Brady got their. And every one knows the Gaints was a defense led team. But when Brady leave you and your Patriots fans will be gone even though some of yall have already left because the Patriots back wining again . I will still be here rooting for my bucs !!

  30. Rob Singer Says:

Beckles just made the long list of Nostradamus’s who claim every year that Brady is “showing his age” after a pathetic loss.

Sounds like another Super Bowl championship to me!

  31. Swampbuc Says:

The Buccaneers have a rich history of sucking. The Bucs suckening process is as infectious as Omicron variant. No one is immune. Even the Mighty Tom Brady is showing symptoms. His sickening factor has quintupled over the last six regular quarters, generating a passer rating that would even make Goobert feel ashamed.

Suckening – a Buccaneers patented process.
