Step It Up, Bowles!

November 12th, 2021

No excuses this time

The Bucs hold a unique advantage against Washington starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke, and it has nothing to do with him not being very good.

On Sunday, the Bucs will become the first team to face Heinicke twice since he re-invented his career in Washington after being Carolina’s third-stringer in 2018. He didn’t make an NFL roster in 2019.

A second look at Heinicke means defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and his defense should have a supreme advantage compared to when they saw Heinicke in Round 1 of last year’s playoffs. The Bucs were preparing to face broken down Alex Smith and ended up with the younger scrambler instead.

Heinicke got off to a good start this season but has struggled for four consecutive games. However, the Bucs have a way of making wannabe starting quarterbacks look good.

Joe is slightly fearful that Heinicke could run wild against the Bucs like he did earlier this season against Green Bay (10 rushes for 95 yards). He had six carries for 46 yards with a touchdown run against the Bucs in the playoffs.

Regardless, Bowles has the talent and the coaching experience to suffocate a backup quarterback who is a now a known quantity, and Bowles had extra time to prepare.

Let’s go, Bowles. Step up!

The names are part of Bucs lore. Derek Anderson, Case Keenum, Paxton Lynch, and…Taylor Heinicke?! Yes, let’s go and shut him down! Go Bucs!

  2. Bird Says:

Off topic but we literally heard how weak nfc is compared to afc right here

The darling Ravens got spanked by the lowly dolphins last night. Two teams that could barely put up points in the first half. 😂
Chiefs could barely beat the packers without Karen. 😂
Raiders? Steelers? Bengals? Browns? Chargers ? Nah

  3. Tim in PSL Says:

There is absolutely no excuse for letting he and WTF getting the better of our defense. If anybody has the book on this guy, it’s Bowles. Yeah I know, they get paid too, don’t give me that. We have too much talent for these guys to hang with us.

  4. Bucdan Says:

Similar game plan to what we did vs an inexperienced and athletic Justin Fields. Packages that change look post snap and have a QB spay (preferably JTS) to track Heinicke’s movement and cover the throwing lanes.

    Go Bucs!

  5. Bobby M. Says:

I’ve said many times on here, Bowles tends to struggle with QBs in new systems but once there’s tape and experience against them, we tend to suffocate them the next time around.

No Comment! In TB12 we trust.

  7. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    @Bird
I watched in shock as the Dolphins beat the Ravens last night.
Speaking of Dolphins, my 4 year old granddaughter has been in tears lately because that Dolphin named Winter died.

  8. Craig Says:

Has Devin White gotten that memo? It is going to be his job to keep Heinicke in check, I hope his attention span can hold up.

TB12 and the remains of our weapons have an offensive advantage over the WTF. If we give them a bunch of first downs down the stretch it might be moot. It is going to take the whole team to make the Bucs look good again; I hope they are on the same page.

  9. orlbucfan Says:

Going to be interesting to hear what Bowles dials up with Tryon against a healthy scrambling QB. JTS is faster than lightning and he’s being coached by the best.

  10. BillyBucco Says:

Just do what Miami did last night.

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Now that you’ve challenged Bowles to ‘step it up’ I’ll have to keep an eye on him out on the field Joe. What position did you say that he played? Oh and what’s his number?

Oh and BTW, Sunday’s game outcome SHOULD be a lot more about our offense against the WFT defense. We’ve got our #1 offense going against their #29 defense. If Bucs don’t control that game from start to finish I’ll be disappointed.

  12. captivajim Says:

we should NOT need Godwin to beat #29 defense…we have DEPTH –we think ….

  13. Cobraboy Says:

@Doc Stroud: let us not forget Tribursky vs. the Bucs…

  14. Bucs Bro Says:

Bowles is not that good. Think of all the teams that lit this defense up but then struggle in subsequent weeks. Take off the blinders outside of our playoff run the defense has been average at best.

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

Our Bucs are famous for giving unknown/unheralded QB’s future good salaries and reputations. They need to play lights out come Sunday. Look what happened to them Ravens last night. Thought they had an easy one huh? Got spanked.
    Bring it Bucs.

  16. Oneilbuc Says:

    Easy win go bucs !!!
