“I Think I Blocked Two People”

November 29th, 2021

Donovan Smith

Ironman Bucs left tackle Donovan Smith is surely a team-first guy, but even those dudes show their egos once in a while.

During a fun moment of the Buccaneers’ official Hooters postgame radio show, Smith was asked about Leonard “Lombardi Lenny” Fournette’s game-winning, 29-yard touchdown run.

“I think I blocked two people,” Smith replied.

Indeed he did.

And Smith then quickly laughed about his what-about-me kind of comment and heaped all kinds of praise on the Bucs running backs and the offense functioning as an 11-man unit.

Smith also quipped that he’d be in favor of the Bucs hammering their ground game with two featured backs.

“Anytime you got two hungry guys that, you know, you could feed [Ronald Jones and Lenny] 25 times a piece if you want. That’s lovely,” Smith said.

It sure is lovely.

And you can watch Smith below hit his block and then get another one at the second level.

As always, the all-game-long blocking of receiver Chris Godwin deserves love, too.

    I actually saw that.
    Good for you Donnie!

It only took you 6.5 years.
    Keep up the good work.

  2. zzbuc Says:

Good job by Donnie and Jensen……

  3. Joehelldeloxley Says:

And still he shouldn’t have scored it !
Should have stop at the one yard line and let Succop kick it !

  4. RachelWatsonsThong Says:

Lenny blew that defensive back into the end zone! Good to see a bruising running game win

  5. zzbuc Says:

    @Joehelldeloxley

    Seriously?

  6. SlyPirate Says:

Lately, great offensive line play results in a flag. Glad the zebras didn’t interfere.

  7. bluetick Says:

Yeah Joehell…. Cuz field goals are always a given

  8. Cobraboy Says:

Props to Cappa pulling around and keeping an LB/DB from setting the edge. That guy wanted nothing to do with Cappa.

And then Godwin was blocking some guy into the end zone.

Excellent, excellent execution, and not the kind John McKay was in favor of…

  9. Crickett Baker Says:

RIIGHT, bluetick..I loved he ran for the TD. We gotta rely on defense more than a kicker imo, even if we have a great one. Tell a Bucs player to give up a sure TD for a possible kick? Hindsight doesn’t tell me that, Bruce..

  10. Tampaabaybucfan Says:

TBBF has never been a D. Smith hater…..but never excited about him either…..but, I’ve got to say….he’s been a steady force……and truly available….I suspect Tom Brady is very, very happy with him at LT.

    And, don’t forget Rojo’s contribution……7 carries for 37 yards….5.3 ypc….not too shabby…

  11. Beeej Says:

I’d expect Leveret (?) Would be more comfortable run blocking than pass blocking

  12. Swampbuc Says:

    Imagine if your the Fowlclowns.

What’s your defensive game plan? The Bucs have now proven repeatedly that if you play two deep with an intermediate shell, the Bucs can kill you on the ground. If you move them in to stop the run, Brady will kill you with the play action or just hitting his WRs with deep balls after looking off the safety.

I love it when the Bucs run the ball well. It always ends up as a win.

Keep taking what the defenses are giving you, BL and TB12!

    @Joehelldeloxley

No, he should have run it in the endzone just like he did. It would have taken a ridiculous fail at the end for us to blow the lead. Yes, I know that nearly happened but the 4 different negative outcomes for attempting the kick are outweighed in my opinion. I always want to score a TD rather than a FG. In fact, I was nervous as we were technically playing for the winning FG. I felt relief when Lenny got in.

  14. cmurda Says:

Exactly Swamp. I was talking about this after the game with my son. The Bucs just ended any thought of teams copycatting playing 2 high safety on us in hopes of taking away our receivers. Now that Gronk is back, good luck. He and the RB’s will feast. I expect defenses to go back to their base against us.

  15. cmurda Says:

@TBBF. Some of us clamored for more ROJO just before Lenny went berserk. Like I said, stick with Fournette. LOL

  16. Will Says:

Lenny was lights out yesterday Rojo was running hard as well. Come playoffs don’t be surprised to see them both in there at the same damn time. That package just isn’t ready to be revealed.

  17. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

He blocked two guys??? I thought his stomach just tripped dude up! I’ve never seen Leonardo run so fast. I love the shoulder shrug he gave the guys chin as he was bull dozing his way into the end zone! Priceless!

  18. Buczilla Says:

That’s pretty damn cool. Maybe having a little swagger is all Smith needed to fulfill his potential. Of course, having that d-bag jordan from the saints constantly chirping at him probably helped put a chip on his shoulder too. Protecting the best football player to ever live probably helped too. Regardless, I love this version of Donovan Smith.

  19. stpetebucsfan Says:

Donnie started it but Godwin finished it with that block near the goal line to seal the deal.

Godwin blocks like a small tight end.

  20. Anonymous Says:

Love Godwin’s blocking! Never been a DSmith fan but I gotta give him credit this season. He’s a free agent this summer right? Funny how that works.

  21. ModHairKen Says:

For an entire week all we heard about was Jonathan Taylor Jonathan Taylor Jonathan Taylor. Jonathan Taylor had five touchdowns. Jonathan Taylor should be in the MVP discussion.

Look at what Fournette did yesterday on the road.

  22. cmurda Says:

Godwin blocks even better than dare I say. Wait for it….. Michael Clayton

  23. BuucccNASTY Says:

Technically 3 lol he got in the way just enough for that safety to have to side step and possibly caused the missed tackle with that half step.. man I was wrong about this dude, keep proving us wrong Donny

  24. adam from ny Says:

d smith is not a free agent, he’s signed for a few years i think…

and with brady at qb he is doing what he has to do pretty darn well these days…

hope i didn’t speak too soon

  25. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Don’t know why they don’t run rojo more!! Obviously Fournette had a great game but so was rojo!! Don’t try to throw it to him or make him block just give him the dang ball!! He wears teams down more, he hits harder, is quicker and has the same per run average as Fournette with not even half the carries 4.6 … You give both these guys equal carries and you will see a team than can control any game!!

  26. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

The only time I would agree with the idea of avoiding scoring a rushing TD late in the game is if, and only if you have the lead and can run the clock out before reaching the end zone. But if the score is tied and there are 20seconds left, GET IN THE FRIGGING END ZONE! Just like Lenny did. How stupid would it feel to get cute and stop at the 1 yard line, miss the kick, run out the clock then lose in overtime. F’ it. Score the TD then deal with it.

  27. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

And as for Donnie, good job, you blocked one guy then got in the way of another.

Dude, you said a few weeks ago that you thought Bucs wouldn’t win another game this year and go 6-11. Are you bipolar?

  29. Duane Says:

DSmith and his availability have allowed him to put a solid resume together that more people are recognizing. Easier for him to pass defend when the ball gets out in 2.5 seconds, and his size and strength are apparent when the team RUNS THE FOOTBALL. Maybe he has gotten better over time, or just maybe he is now in a position to succeed because his talents are being put to better use.

  30. David G Says:

Smith AND Godwin, we might have two of the best Catching receivers in the league and two of the best blocking receivers in the league in Evans and Godwin! It is so much fun being a Bucs Fan!
