Winfield Out; Edwards In

October 8th, 2021

Mike Edwards

More opportunity has emerged for safety Mike Edwards.

Antoine Winfield, Jr., did not find his way out of the NFL concussion protocol this week and will not play Sunday.

Edwards is in line to make his second start of the season. (He didn’t officially start in Week 1 when Jordan Whitehead was out, but he played nearly the entire game. So Joe’s calling him a starter.)

Joe’s not down on Winfield, but when Edwards plays, the Bucs’ chances of an interception seem to rise.

Winfield is a great player but we don’t miss much with Edwards……Edwards causes or makes interceptions on a regular basis…..Our defense will be better this week with JPP & Dean back and Sherman with another week of preparation…

Spot on, TBBF. Edwards has real potential. Working with Richard Sherman is going to elevate him and Dean. This may be a stifling week of Defense.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

Got a hunch that the Rams game was a wakeup call for our DLine in particular because they looked a lot more aggressive in the Patriots game than they have in any other game. And a more aggressive DLine will help our Secondary more than anything.

Assuming Dean does come back, it’ll be interesting to see how much they use him. Cockrell’s been doing quite well IMO, and I’d assume Bowles will use him at Nickel, with Sherman & Dean outside. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dean’s snaps be limited, with Desir getting some time in there also. Can never have too many experienced CBs (as we’ve already learned the hard way).

    Go Edwards.

I think due to the heat on Sunday they will rotate the cornerbacks especially Sherman and Dean.

  6. Hodad Says:

I think the Bucs are missing the boat by not having all three play together. I would rotate them in, and out as safety, nickle. They are our three best DBs, forget the word safety. They could be an awesome trio. When Bunting comes back, we’ll be all the more dangerous.

I’m sorry but Bunting has never really impressed me. To me he’s just an average CB.
